Love Actually - Hasn’t dated so well…

Following on from an earlier thread regarding Four Weddings, I watched Love Actually a few years back and can remember a few things that made me think it’s not dated so well!
Fat shaming, misogyny, homophobic but the worse one for me personally was Colin Firth’s character using an offensive ableist slur…
AIBU and overthinking it - it’s what it is yadda yadda even though it makes me cringe and is slightly triggering ( child has a disability)

its on over Christmas and it’s annoying me that it’ll be lumped in as a great Christmas film but I find it really outdated and offensive!

I really hate that kind of stuff: it’s nasty and outdated!!
Someone give my head a wobble but be kind if you do….

Never seen if but having watched Frank Spencer being called a “poofter” today on uk gold, I just see these things as a time capsule. To not see that stuff would mean my children would not have an appreciation of the offhand insults gay people has to live with.

Love a Richard Curtis film. But this is his worst. Don’t hate it, but it’s lacking in his usual light touch.

Emeraldforest · 13/12/2025 19:08

I love it! I tend to be politically correct but I've enjoyed watching it a dozen times!

Some of us look for joy instead of outrage, so are still able to e how it hugely every year.

I can't believe people enjoying a film riles you that much to do a MN Post, wild! 🤣

dontshootmessenger · 13/12/2025 19:15

hated it from the first time I saw it in 2003. For all the reasons displayed. Just a big cringe fest.

Weirdly my very “woke” daughter loves this film. I cringe at some of it but still enjoy watching most of it. I’m constantly thinking how rapidly what is acceptable has changed in the last 10-20 years.

nagnagnag · 13/12/2025 22:47

We watched it last Christmas and agreed we wouldn’t again. The fat shaming is weird, unpleasant and really unfunny.

Floatingvoting · 13/12/2025 23:14

Just don’t watch it FFS. Aren’t there bigger issues get worked up about?

JenniferBooth · 13/12/2025 23:18

Has anyone else seen the deleted scene with Anne Reid and Frances de la Tour?

Are they scissoring? I wouldn’t put it past Mr Curtis.

I love ❤️ Love Actually!

I watched it again a couple of nights ago on tv. I’d been thinking earlier in the day it was surely due to be aired anytime soon and lo and behold, I put the tv on in the evening and it was just ready to start❤️

I still laugh watching it, even though I’ve seen it numerous times and still shed a tear for Karen (Emma) when she eagerly opens her gift 😢.

Did I say I love it?

Unfortunately @SMAJJ your film choices from hereon are pretty much restricted to 2010 and afterwards, otherwise you risk being “triggered”

Twitch1994 · 14/12/2025 07:57

This comes up every year… yawn!!

It’s a film, not a documentary. It doesn’t have to be factual or what would actually happen in real life.

If you don’t like it, switch it off. Personally it is one of my favourite Christmas films, and yes the use of one “S” word in it isn’t great, but there are 100s of films that use all manner of words, good and bad!

Get over it and stop being offended on other people’s behalf!

Merry Christmas!

I saw LA at the cinema recently ( one of my favourite films )

Everyone screaming Misogynistic Fat Shaming
It was the Prime Ministers Secretary , Annie , who said "The chubby girl?"
He said "Oooooh would we say chubby?" in a Nooooo tone .

So it's her that's the bitchy one , not misogynistic .
But this is MN . I s'ppose her Dad is a vile abusive shite for calling her "Plumpey" ? Hmm

jezebel.com has an excoriating review of it

That review turns up on MN every Christmas.

It was a man that wrote the misogynistic script and put these lines into female characters mouths so your point doesn’t really hold up.

It's the narrative of the film that's the issue not the moral status of individual characters. In your example, Richard Curtis made the body of Martine McCutcheon's character a storyline. We're supposed to celebrate this as a love story of a man of high status choosing a woman, not just of lower status but also not skinny. 🙄. The film is misogynistic whether RC chose to use female or male characters to voice the opinions.

KittyHigham · 14/12/2025 08:37

And women can exhibit misogyny as well as men.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 14/12/2025 08:42

You’re right @Twitch1994, we get this every year (along with the obligatory Band Aid bashing thread). Wouldn’t be Christmas without it!
