Bill splitter karma

1000 replies

Payforyourowndinner · 02/04/2024 23:25

I wanted to share this as often read stories on here of people getting stung by people insisting on splitting the bill when they’ve gone all out on cocktails and steak.

I went out with work tonight, and don’t go often. I was driving so no drink but did have a starter, main, and dessert.

There is a person who works for the company but not on my team who often hears about meals out and adds himself on. No one ever stops him. He does get on with some of the men on my team so all good, but he does go for the steak, wine, sides etc and insists on splitting and folks are too scared to challenge him for some reason. Now as he’s not on my team he’s not on my team WhatsApp group so I put it out there on the chat I wouldn’t be splitting, just paying for my own. A few added that they’d much prefer to do that (and a few of the newer staff are on a lower wage). No one updated the other man (why would they?) so out we went, all ordered. Some preferred one course with water, others the same as me. Some shared wine. He ordered- (I made a note as it was crazy)
bread and oil
A starter
bottle of Rioja
main (steak and chicken)
two sides
dessert
2 pints.
Now, I’m all for going for it, fill your boots, but pay for it.
The bill came, he said “usual is it?”, I said what do you mean, he said well spilt like always. I took so much delight in telling him that we had all decided to pay for our own, times are hard and we have junior members etc. Oh the face, the face!! He said he would never have ordered what he did if he knew we weren’t splitting and I took great delight in saying “you wouldn’t have ordered what you did if you knew you’d have to pay for it all yourself? Didn’t you see some had one meal and a glass of water?”
As we paid the bill I also made sure that they took our payments before his so he couldn’t wangle. He was so red, he paid and left without saying a word.

I can’t believe the cheek of some people.
hope it will make him think twice. I understand friends splitting bills but why would he assume colleagues from other teams would want to pay for his dinner.

I wanted to share the little win. When I was a junior I wouldn’t have stood up to him either, but menopause does things to a woman.

Brilliant 🤩

travelforthesoul · 03/04/2024 06:59

I love this! Menopause for good causes. Grin

Let's hope this CF thinks twice next time. Looking forward to the update

@GrannyNannyMagratandGreebo PP's quote is a slightly paraphrased section from Taylor Swift's song Karma.

🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇

Bravo you Magnificent Woman!

I hope the accolades come pouring in today from your colleagues.

RampantIvy · 03/04/2024 07:02

👏👏👏
Brilliant.

It is refreshing to see a thread about someone being assertive and getting a result instead of the many threads about passive meek women who won't stick up for themselves.

TheThoughtfulCandlemaker · 03/04/2024 07:03

Just brilliant

Toogles · 03/04/2024 07:07

Excellent.

The cheeky sod, trying to argue by admitting that he wouldn't have ordered all that if he knew he would have to pay for it!

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 03/04/2024 07:09

That's fantastic - is he usually an office dweller? Please let us know if anything gets said today.

Does anyone know a lute player who can stroll the halls of OPs workplace singing songs about legendary bravery?

I wonder if he blurted out his confession by accident, seems odd to confirm that you expect others to pay for you otherwise!

Sodypop · 03/04/2024 07:10

£83! Amazing. What an absolute cad.

NeurodivergentBurnout · 03/04/2024 07:11

Oh I’d love to have seen his face!
Did he drink an entire bottle of wine and two pints himself? I’d assume someone ordering a bottle of wine was genuinely to share (unless I knew he was like this beforehand) in a ‘Anyone else like red wine and wants to share?’ type of way.
I do think this was the perfect way to prevent him from getting to split the bill and he’ll be loathe to do it with your team again!

Payforyourowndinner · 03/04/2024 07:12

@ZigZagIntoTheBlue oh it was definitely an accidental blurt! He was shocked. Think he wanted everyone to pay around £45 mark. Can you imagine. One persons was £23!
I don’t see him in the office much, so not sure. I’ll ask around today.

RainRaingoaway01 · 03/04/2024 07:13

£83 in a hungry horse?!

Serves him right anyway. I hate splitting the bill in a big group. I don’t do it any more. I don’t even buy a round of drinks. I just say, I’ll get my own thanks.

GnomeDePlume · 03/04/2024 07:13

I wonder what sits behind this.

Is it possible there is some sort of secret competition going on between a group to see how much can ordered then lost in a bill split?

It's the fact that he latches on without seeming to be invited. Does he do this with other teams? Are there other people doing similar?

Payforyourowndinner · 03/04/2024 07:14

@NeurodivergentBurnout he downed one pint whilst we were looking at the menu.
It seems like I was stalking him, but I was genuinely keeping my eye on him to see what he was eating and drinking as I knew he’d want to split. He went for it!

I still feel full from my courses (and I paid £34! )

OP posts:
Payforyourowndinner · 03/04/2024 07:15

@RainRaingoaway01 I think his wine was about £20 alone

ButtockUp · 03/04/2024 07:15

Wonderful!

violetcuriosity · 03/04/2024 07:15

This is brilliant 😂

Whenever we go out we all kind of agree what we're having E.g. are we doing starters or dessert etc and kind of go with the majority. Then when the bill comes we split it but take off the alcohol and people that have been drinking sort out that cost between them. Can't imagine expecting anyone who hasn't had a drink to contribute towards my alcohol!!!

Ramalangadingdong · 03/04/2024 07:15

This is brilliant! Well done! This is why people sometimes try to put down us older women - because we don’t put up with any bullshit.

Justleaveitblankthen · 03/04/2024 07:16

Brilliant OP 🤗

The type of thread I 'Watch' from the title alone and you didn't disappoint 😂👏

SunshineOnARainyDay3 · 03/04/2024 07:16

Loving this!

Payforyourowndinner · 03/04/2024 07:16

@Ramalangadingdong the younger me definitely would have put up with this bullshit and it makes me quite sad to think so, so I hope I’ve inspired a few not to any more.

OP posts:
Nannyfannybanny · 03/04/2024 07:23

Brilliant. I used to get this at work meals out a lot! They always picked venues near where they lived or we worked. I had a long commute, was driving,so didn't drink, hiatus hernia,so often had just a starter. Everyone else is on 3 course meals, wine and spirits. So eventually I said I would pay for myself. The restaurant staff didn't like it.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 03/04/2024 07:23

👏👍👏well done OP!

It’s good he’s got caught out in plain view too because it looks like in the past his meal has just been absorbed into the general bill. Cheeky sod.

I’d also try to mention that team meals are for team members only from now on… just in case he tries this again, say if you’re on holiday or tries this trick again anyway.

LampShadeTaj · 03/04/2024 07:24

God love you @Payforyourowndinner flipping heck he had a right feast! What a CF well done!!

twohotwaterbottles · 03/04/2024 07:27

Oh bravo OP. You absolute star. I've been stung recently and my colleague actually asked "so are we splitting the bill then?" before he ordered. I wanted to ask him why he wanted to know 'before' he ordered but wasn't brave enough. It puts me off going out. I LOVE this thread. Well done you. Can't wait for any updates from the office 😂👏🏻
