Bill splitter karma

1000 replies

Payforyourowndinner · 02/04/2024 23:25

I wanted to share this as often read stories on here of people getting stung by people insisting on splitting the bill when they’ve gone all out on cocktails and steak.

I went out with work tonight, and don’t go often. I was driving so no drink but did have a starter, main, and dessert.

There is a person who works for the company but not on my team who often hears about meals out and adds himself on. No one ever stops him. He does get on with some of the men on my team so all good, but he does go for the steak, wine, sides etc and insists on splitting and folks are too scared to challenge him for some reason. Now as he’s not on my team he’s not on my team WhatsApp group so I put it out there on the chat I wouldn’t be splitting, just paying for my own. A few added that they’d much prefer to do that (and a few of the newer staff are on a lower wage). No one updated the other man (why would they?) so out we went, all ordered. Some preferred one course with water, others the same as me. Some shared wine. He ordered- (I made a note as it was crazy)
bread and oil
A starter
bottle of Rioja
main (steak and chicken)
two sides
dessert
2 pints.
Now, I’m all for going for it, fill your boots, but pay for it.
The bill came, he said “usual is it?”, I said what do you mean, he said well spilt like always. I took so much delight in telling him that we had all decided to pay for our own, times are hard and we have junior members etc. Oh the face, the face!! He said he would never have ordered what he did if he knew we weren’t splitting and I took great delight in saying “you wouldn’t have ordered what you did if you knew you’d have to pay for it all yourself? Didn’t you see some had one meal and a glass of water?”
As we paid the bill I also made sure that they took our payments before his so he couldn’t wangle. He was so red, he paid and left without saying a word.

I can’t believe the cheek of some people.
hope it will make him think twice. I understand friends splitting bills but why would he assume colleagues from other teams would want to pay for his dinner.

I wanted to share the little win. When I was a junior I wouldn’t have stood up to him either, but menopause does things to a woman.

You played a blinder OP. Nice one.

i don’t think I’ve ever split a bill I didn’t want to, so what is particularly impressive in your tale of joy for me is how you did this and got him to admit he wanted everyone to pay for his food. Some of your younger team members just learned how to hold a boundary.

hope work goes well today.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 03/04/2024 07:34

I hope this gets around at work and he can't pull this again. What a selfish, entitled prick.

Trethew · 03/04/2024 07:36

I used to work in a foodie pub. We had a party of eight booked for dinner. They had a good time, lots to eat and drink. Organiser asked for the bill which was around £300 (or £37.50 each). He suggested everyone paid £42 to include service and all agreed. They paid and left in dribs and drabs until the last man came to pay at the till. He asked how much was left on the bill and was told everyone was paying £42. He asked again how much was left owing on the table and it was approx £6 which he paid and left. So his meal was mostly paid for by the staff’s tips (£34)

We debated whether or not to phone the organiser next day and let him know what had happened. We didn’t, but now I wish we had

PuppyMonkey · 03/04/2024 07:38

Nice one OP.

This is why I prefer those pubs where each person goes up to the till to order their meal and pays for it there and then!

@GrannyNannyMagratandGreebo PP's quote is a slightly paraphrased section from Taylor Swift's song Karma.

Thank you! I knew I recognised it from somewhere but couldn't remember where.

Oh, my!

This has warmed the cockles of my cold, hard heart.

For you to actually say that to him, too - fully expose his greed and entitlement in front of the entire table - is a delight.

Like you, I wouldn't have dared do that at one time, and like you, as a post-menopausal "take-no-shit" wumman, I wouldn't hesitate now.

BRILLIANT that you had the opportunity to do it.

Karma - she really is a hard-hearted bitch - and I LOVE her! 😅

Bulkypeepants · 03/04/2024 08:08

Sorry OP, I haven't read the entire thread so you may have said somewhere already, but did the rest of your team acknowledge this heroic deed? I would hope it's the talk of the office today!

Emotionalsupportviper · 03/04/2024 08:10

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 03/04/2024 07:34

I hope this gets around at work and he can't pull this again. What a selfish, entitled prick.

I'd be interested to see if he ever tries it.

I rarely use this word because it's horrible, but he truly is a "see-you-next-Tuesday"

He asked again how much was left owing on the table and it was approx £6 which he paid and left. So his meal was mostly paid for by the staff’s tips (£34)

And that was a foul thing for the customer to do @Trethew - what a shame you didn't shop him. If I'd been of the company I'd have gone crackers to know I'd subsidised his meal (because I best he wasn't well-liked at work. People like that get known and despised.)

Op... MY HERO!

AngelinaFibres · 03/04/2024 08:14

TheFormidableMrsC · 03/04/2024 00:08

Cheeky bastard and to say it out loud too!

I once found my voice and said no to splitting as I'd had water and one course and everybody else had had endless cocktails, wine and 3 courses. I couldn't afford it! If I could I would have had the same as everybody else and happily split. Some people just take the piss.

Many years ago I was a single mum. I just couldn't afford to pay for a proper big meal out with other people or get involved in buying rounds. I had to find the guts to say that I would come to things but pay only for what I had ( main and diet coke that I made last all night). If it had been unacceptable then I would have stayed at home. I realised how freeing it was. No need to worry about the person that does what your colleague did Op. It is brilliant that you sorted them out

Emotionalsupportviper · 03/04/2024 08:16

Payforyourowndinner · 02/04/2024 23:55

He will be put off from going out with our team I hope

Not just your team, I hope!

I'd try to subtly make sure word gets round and every other team meal in the organisation ends the same.

Not only kicks him in the bollox, but much fairer on the less-well-paid team members who end up paying 50 quid for a plate of pasta and a glass of water sometimes.

Londontown12 · 03/04/2024 08:19

I am so glad to read this, well done.
I have someone similar in my life, orders merrily and always grabs the bill and says LET'S SPLIT IT SHALL WE. He is independently wealthy from a family business, barely works and is married to a doctor.
I actually avoid going out with him now because I don't want to subsidise his drinking and gluttony, but you've inspired me, I might call him out next time. It's hard to in that situation when everyone has been sharing a meal, and these selfish greedy people rely on it.

Please do - and tell us about it and describe his face.

I NEED TO HEAR THESE THINGS!

Nevermindtheteacaps · 03/04/2024 08:23

Heroic!!!!!!

Payforyourowndinner · 03/04/2024 08:24

Just pulled up in car park. No one has said anything on work WhatsApp group since before the meal but I’ll see who is in now.
@Bulkypeepants there was a “yes we agreed on our WhatsApp group we weren’t splitting” but mostly people just watched 😂

FlibbertyGibbitt · 03/04/2024 08:29

Once went out with a group at work, some drank, some didn’t (me, driving) bill comes and we were working out who had had what. Manager got stroppy with me and shouted “split the bill Flibberty, split the bill !” So I did 🤷‍♀️

Next morning , came in and had a go as someone had a cheap meal and obviously ended up paying more. Never again !!!

For heaven's sake - we are waiting!

Run up those stairs - you don't have time to wait for a lift.

<wonders if everyone has decorated the office for @Payforyourowndinner and she will be huzzah'd to an echo and carried shoulder high to her desk>

😁

MarkWithaC · 03/04/2024 08:30

What an idiot to actually admit his game plan!
I might have had a little bit of respect for him if he’d styled it out and just sucked it up and paid.

VickyEadieofThigh · 03/04/2024 08:32

Well done for getting the ball rolling on not splitting the bill!

Two friends and I were recently at a party and staying with other friends who have been so generous to us and the 3 of us told them we wanted to take the hosts out the next day (the 3 of us plus one other friend were staying overnight for 2 nights with the hosts). A couple attending the party heard and added themselves to the group (we the bill payers did not know this pair).

We ended up paying for one of them as 'they hadn't brought enough cash'...

Shock made him gasp the quiet bit out loud, it seems.

Woo hoo! You will be the office hero today 😂.

Good on you OP. Someone needs to stand up to these cheeky fuckers!
