How often does your OH think about the Roman Empire?

Just for fun

saw on Facebook a post saying that men think about the Roman Empire every day. The woman asked her husband and he said this was true and that he thinks about it daily. The comments was people asking their husbands how often they think about the Roman Empire with some very funny responses 😂

So, I’ll start .., I’ve just asked DH and he said “at least twice a week, why?”

would love to hear other Responses to this random question

“how often do you think about the Roman Empire?”

About once a month apparently. Not at all phased by the question. Like it’s normal and normal to be asked.

😂My DH reacted like this too! Totally normal question... once or twice a month was the answer.

I thought he was going to laugh at me asking him such a weird question!

peachypudding · 13/09/2023 07:57

It's a great question. I laughed when I read it but then I shocked myself when I realised I probably think about the Roman Empire most days. And medieval times. I just like history

LateEarlies · 13/09/2023 08:07

About once a week apparently, 'it's usually the roads'. He also was completely unbothered by the question and didn't ask why I wanted to know.

Celticdawn5 · 13/09/2023 08:10

I asked my husband and he replied at least once a fortnight, sometimes more.
I asked him to be more specific , and he reeled off Romans in relation to Scotland, Vine growing, and architecture for starters.
I

LadyBird1973 · 13/09/2023 08:34

I just asked and dh said once a week approx. Apparently this is because the Roman Empire is pervasive in our current environment Confused

Men are weird - I use the roads and the toilet every day too. Can't say I ever think about the Romans while doing either tbh Grin

FineBerol · 13/09/2023 08:34

Can people give examples?

Is it every time they drive on a straight road or something ?

kersh33 · 13/09/2023 08:46

DH said about once a week which I have to admit I was really surprised by. I did Latin to A Level and love all the Classics and I have to say I think I could go from one month to the next without thinking about it.

When I spoke to DH about it, he reeled off the latest example of a documentary he was watching about money and it's introduction and its use across the Roman Empire. Maybe men watch more documentaries on the History Channel? 🤷‍♀️

@DarkSpark you have a Mornington Crescent jumper?!

btw, Euston Square if it’s not too early to play a diagonal reverse!

MothralovesGojira · 13/09/2023 08:53

Mine says "very infrequently" but then again he really lacks imagination and rarely dreams and is actually quite literal in his thinking!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/09/2023 09:03

Weekly. I nearly fell over! 😮

travelogue · 13/09/2023 09:07

Now I want to know why? Why are all these men thinking about the Roman Empire on a weekly if not daily basis? What are they thinking?? Mind is now boggled. I think I'm going to think about what men are thinking about the Roman Empire every time I see a man from now on! So several times a day. Anytime DH appears not to be listening I'm going to assume he's deep in thought about the Romans. Perhaps I will get a gladius to snap him out of it Grin

GingerLiberalFeminist · 13/09/2023 09:08

This made me laugh out loud as DH and I discuss Roman Empire almost daily, but it's my obsession rather than his. He on the other hand thinks about Agincourt daily

FettleOfKish · 13/09/2023 09:09

Just had a message from DH. 96 minutes after he woke up today, someone at work mentioned the Romans 😂

I don't know if that was in the context of 'did your DW ask how often you think about the Romans last night?' or not.

Turtletotem · 13/09/2023 09:18

I asked my 15 year old this morning.
The answer was 2 and a half times a week!
A half thought??

BitOutOfPractice · 13/09/2023 09:19

@DarkSpark I am genuinely bereft that's not available any more 😩

I reckon there are several reasons, depending on the person. Some will be interested in the structural/cultural stuff like aqueducts and roads and mosaics and villas. Some will be interested in the power dynamics and political intrigue. Some will think about the looting and pillaging and violent gladiatorial contests. Others will be interested in the language legacy. And some will, inevitably, simply be interested in the orgies😆

Of course it is entirely possible to be interested in all of these ... which would certainly take up a lot of space in a person's brain.

travelogue · 13/09/2023 09:37

@Tessisme - yes there is a lot of material to keep them busy, and it's a fascinating topic...but there are also millions of other fascinating topics in the world - I mean the orgies bit stands to reason obviously 🤪 and that would explain everything including the frequency😂

WarriorN · 13/09/2023 10:15

FineBerol · 13/09/2023 08:34

Is it every time they drive on a straight road or something ?

Yes

And every time I plan a lesson on mosaics.

And every year I teach y4. And y5. For a while term.

And every time I drive up the west road in Newcastle through the tail end of fenham where there's a Roman temple just sitting there beside the road.

It's in some people's back gardens round there.

Only4nomore · 13/09/2023 10:19

🤣🤣🤣
Mine said a couple of times a month.

I think it's more he's always saying
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance

And shouting
Are you not entertained at random shit

AllHopeandRainbows · 13/09/2023 10:24

Genuinely thought this was a euphemism 🤣 I really can’t imagine my DH response to be anything but confusion but I’ll give it a go…

NortieTortie · 13/09/2023 10:34

I saw that post too. When I asked, DH said 'I don't?' and looked a bit baffled by the question 😁

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/09/2023 10:47

DH says only when he listens to When I Ruled the World by Coldplay. He's from the far east though, so has no historical connection to the Roman Empire.

SingingKlingon · 13/09/2023 11:11

tobyj · 13/09/2023 06:31

This is just so interesting. When people say they think about it, what do they mean?? Is it like an extended imagination/fantasy of daydreaming what it would be like to be a Roman? Or random questions (I wonder whether the Romans made cheese)? Or because you're reminded by something on TV or in a book? Or you actively sit down to read or look up something about the Romans? Or you just suddenly think - the Romans, hey they were interesting? I don't think I think about any historical period in this way, certainly not regularly. I'm beginning to think my brain is weird!!

@tobyj

Wrote you long post giving several examples of thinking about the Roman Empire then lost it!

So I'll only give you couple now. When I'm driving down a straight road such as the Fosse Way, i'd imagine the soldiers marching or the slaves digging.

Seeing a sign for Cirencester and thinking of the coliseum there and wondering if they had tigers? Where they kept the tigers? What the locals thought of the tigers? Then that would get me thinking of bears which if you're local to Glos will understand.

Etc etc etc

Starstruck2020 · 13/09/2023 11:29

Is that a code word for sex?

" Well I googled it the day before yesterday funnily enough, why do you ask?" Then looked at me suspiciously and is probably deleting his browser history right now.
