How often does your OH think about the Roman Empire?

Just for fun

saw on Facebook a post saying that men think about the Roman Empire every day. The woman asked her husband and he said this was true and that he thinks about it daily. The comments was people asking their husbands how often they think about the Roman Empire with some very funny responses 😂

So, I’ll start .., I’ve just asked DH and he said “at least twice a week, why?”

would love to hear other Responses to this random question

“how often do you think about the Roman Empire?”

I'm a Classics graduate and I'm married to a Latin teacher, and I never think about it 😂Who are all these Roman empire obsessives??!!

You have my vote for Queen of Mumsnet

No OH however I am amazed by the people who never think of the Roman Empire, or worse, think of a different Empire?!
What did the Mayans ever do for us eh?

My most frequent Empire based thoughts and actions involve the family arranging themselves into a tortoise formation using umbrellas when the rain is not only falling downwards but sideways

What did the Mayans ever do for us eh?

chocolate? Grin

SingingKlingon · 12/09/2023 23:43

No OH and a woman but I think about it 3-4 times a week!!

PiratePetespajamas · 12/09/2023 23:45

But I think about it every day! At least once a day. Maybe more. I’m excited to ask DH when he wakes up. I reckon the answer will be “never” but I’ll be intrigued if he’s all matter of fact and “yes, probably twice a day”!

I know this is off piste, but my DH used to assert that he could think nothing.

Nothing. His brain could be completely empty of any thought.

This can't be true, surely? He always looked a bit vacant, but still...

He’d have been brilliant at the end of Ghostbusters.

Anyway I can’t ask my husband, because he’s asleep, but I suspect he thinks more about Vikings.

JFDIYOLO · 12/09/2023 23:55

@Gonners I think about Ghengis Khan every few weeks on account of the Hu band from Mongolia who are ... ooooohhhh ...

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 12/09/2023 23:56

About once a month apparently. Not at all phased by the question. Like it’s normal and normal to be asked.

HangingByYourFingernails · 12/09/2023 23:59

I would have put money on my DS (19: known interests computer games, tanks and invertebrates) being a once a year man, but he surprised me by saying "Oh I dunno, not very often, maybe 5 times a week?" He then elaborated with "I don't think about them much but when I do, you know, they had cool shields and formations and stuff, and engineering and stuff. They were just cool."

I believe I have found the exact generic male who the OP's Facebook post was based on.

JFDIYOLO · 13/09/2023 00:00

Nearly midnight and I'm waiting for him to come out of the bathroom.

Bear with ...

About once a week, on average, but more at the moment because of I, Claudius on the telly.

Now to find the Mornington Crescent thread …

I have Mornington crescent jumper because I really love Belle and Sebastian and they have a song by that name. Am now worried it means something else and I've been unwittingly participating 😳

smooththecat · 13/09/2023 00:01

I will concede that I do think about other empires. I often think about China and how amazing it is that it had such a long continuous series of dynasties/empires but I don’t have enough knowledge to think many thoughts in detail about China. I also think regularly about Mesopotamia, the Persian (Achaemenid) empire and, more recently, Russia. The British empire is trickier because it’s still somewhat knocking around, one of the last very few and the main thoughts that need to be thought about it are what to do with it, more of a live issue.

NoSaladThanks · 13/09/2023 00:03

I think my husband is wondering whether my Meno madness is peaking or not.
It went like this.
Me. How often do you think about the Roman empire?
Him. What?
Me. The Roman empire, how often do you think about it?
Him. Is this a trick question?
Me. No.
Him. Are you ok? Only a few weeks ago, you asked me if I stood up or sat down to wipe my arse!
Me. Hmm yes.
Him. You've been reading MN again haven't you.
Me. Yes, so how often?
Him. Never, am I supposed to?
Me. I dunno, how's your chop?
And that ended that dinner conversation.

That's hilarious. When you're wearing it, are you ever confused by random people sidling up to you and saying "West Ruislip"?

ChannelLightVessel · 13/09/2023 00:06

Only male in the house is the cat, who I’m pretty sure only thinks about food and naps, but DD and I certainly think about it a lot. Not surprising, though, as I’m a Classics graduate, and she’s doing Latin GCSE and is fascinated by Linguistics.

DarkSpark · 13/09/2023 00:07

@HangingByYourFingernails Not as yet.... should I be at all concerned if they do?!

Mirabai · 13/09/2023 00:08

I think I think about Life of Brian more often than the Roman Empire itself.

Life of Brian comes up a lot - for me anyway.

JFDIYOLO · 13/09/2023 00:11

"Well, I'm thinking about it now, thanks.

I don't know.

A couple of times a month.

You get a lot about it on on television."

That's inconclusive, I feel.

Oh wow! Just asked my 19 year old ( still up gaming) and he said “ multiple times a week” !!

I asked him if this was a question he’d heard before and he looked confused.

I’ve been thinking about the Empire a lot this week because I heard some guy on the radio talk about the American XL bully breed being direct decedents of the Roman Dogs of War.

SzeliSecond · 13/09/2023 00:22

"not very often, maybe once a week"

WinterDeWinter · 13/09/2023 00:26

When I Claudius is not on, he still mentions the Roman Empire more often than I would like

😂😂😂@Tessisme

edwinbear · 13/09/2023 00:27

Zero. In fact this thread is the first time I’ve thought about it since I took Latin & Classics GCSE c.35 years ago. I’ve not asked DH, but fairly certain his answer would be even less often than me. He was not enthusiastic when I encouraged DS to take Classics as a GCSE c.6 months ago.

Iateallthechocolate · 13/09/2023 00:33

He said - I've thought about it maybe twice in my life. I think about Roman Emperors quite often though.

WinterDeWinter · 13/09/2023 00:36

‘Twice a year. I think about the British Empire much more often.’

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 13/09/2023 00:36

Gonners · 12/09/2023 21:06

MrG answered "Maybe once every 6 to 8 months" and when I said "No, seriously ..." he laughed and said, well, he had absolutely no idea but that seemed to him like a reasonably vague answer.

Fair enough, really. I mean, how often do you think about Genghis Khan?

Interesting you should say that. Just two days ago I saw a spelling of Kubla Khan as Kublai Khan (in an article about the Silk Road and genetics), which led me to ponder Xanadu and stately pleasure domes (I’ve always thought Azerbaijan (I’ve never been) might be home to a beautiful pleasure dome or two) and thence to the romantics, and from there to drugs and then obvs bang up to today and wondering how much contemporary art is fueled by drugs (most of it, I reckon). I’ve been wondering lately whether the romantics are overrated. Not sure they had the intellectual heft of Eg Virginia Woolf, but obvs benefitted from being male. Hmmm. Probably doing them a disservice taking them out of context (crime against art) and obvs VW more relevant to today. But still. It’s all a bit soft, really.

DH says he never thinks about the Roman Empire, ‘cos he’s American and this is 2023. Not the first time he’s rendered me speechless.

Is it a euphemism for something else?

This was my thought exactly!
