How often does your OH think about the Roman Empire?

Just for fun

saw on Facebook a post saying that men think about the Roman Empire every day. The woman asked her husband and he said this was true and that he thinks about it daily. The comments was people asking their husbands how often they think about the Roman Empire with some very funny responses 😂

So, I’ll start .., I’ve just asked DH and he said “at least twice a week, why?”

would love to hear other Responses to this random question

“how often do you think about the Roman Empire?”

Just asked DS1 (adult) - he said 'every day'. When I asked why, he said 'just think of everything they've done for us'.
Fair comment.

Asked DS2 (also adult (allegedly) ) also a History grad & he said 'Never'! 😆

It’s a wonderful question and amazing so many of us think about it so much.
I’m probably daily. Often faith related- Paul’s letters or apostolic succession. Often language- derivations or Roman numerals or legal phrases. Travel- remembering trips to Rome, Pompei and Ravenna. And topographical? Straight roads, mosaics, Bath etc.

For any like-minded Roman Empire-philes, the OU does a BA and MA in Classical Studies.

I was looking at the Masters in CS just a few days ago. You have to learn some boring shite about Greece but plenty of Rome, Rome, Rome to take the edge off it. 😍😍😍

JustJoinedRightNow · 12/09/2023 22:21

My DH says never

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 12/09/2023 22:21

My nerdy history buff DH said 'uhhh, not very often'. This shocked me as I was expecting him to say quite often. He's too busy running his own work empire to think about another, he says.

Clefable · 12/09/2023 22:23

DH says 'not very often'. Kind of disappointed.

Runningonjammiedodgers · 12/09/2023 22:23

Asked my BIL and he said it wasn't usually the his first thought of the day. I have yet to work out what that means.

GettingStuffed · 12/09/2023 22:23

Not very often, but he's into ancient history and industrial archaeology so probably thinks a lot more about that.

HangingByYourFingernails · 12/09/2023 22:24

DH said a rather disappointing: "somewhere between once a week and once a month". But he has just finished reading a biography of Edward Gibbon which must have pushed his average up.

I probably average once a day. I blame The Rest Is History podcast. Today was at least twice: recommending to a random tourist I got chatting to that they should go and visit the Temple of Mithras, and listening to TRIH livestream. Apart from anything else, this is my To Read pile and I keep guiltily spotting it out of the corner of my eye.

Mine said ‘Whaat!?!’

’About every 6 months’

then we had to rewind Succession coz I’d interrupted it.

PosyPrettyToes · 12/09/2023 22:27

Personally pretty much daily, but in fairness I’m a midwife, so the word caesarean comes up several times a day Grin

blackbeardsballsack · 12/09/2023 22:27

I have been scrolling through this thread wondering if 'how often do you think about the Roman empire' is a euphemism for something and whether I have missed some sort of widely known inside joke.

Lentilweaver · 12/09/2023 22:29

Love this thread. Mine has said never. The boring git.

Doyoureallyhavetoask · 12/09/2023 22:29

He has updated his "not very often" answer - to three times a week!

MissAmbrosia · 12/09/2023 22:29

I haven't asked DH as he's asleep on the sofa, but the subject has been discussed in the house in the last 6 months:
We went on holiday in May to Naples and did Roman stuff and visited Herculaneum
We discussed if Herculaneum was more interesting to visit than Pompeii,
We are going to Sicily in 10 days and have talked about the Roman and Greek things there are to see.
Dd is doing a History degree and has talked far too much about the Punic Wars and Carthage and Hannibal and his elephants.
I suspect if I woke him he would go full on Monty Python.

This is an absolutely fascinating thread!

Well thats what I meant when I posted earlier that words are part of the reason why I think it about it most days

We've just had August as a month. We're now in September, 7, yet its the 9th month..... all because of Julius and Augustus slipping in a couple of months and ruining the numbering system

Selfish

AliasGrape · 12/09/2023 22:30

He’s come to bed now so I’ve been able to dig a little deeper into what he’s actually thinking about when he does think about it … apparently it’s ‘mostly aqueducts, sometimes just roads’.

I said I thought it would be more about the politics, personalities, decline and fall etc - he said no, ‘we all know what happened with the fall of Rome, it’s well documented’ - so there you go guys, no need to think about it any further!

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 12/09/2023 22:31

Just asked my DH and he replied nearly every day.

Sodullincomparison · 12/09/2023 22:31

DH said

What??

once a month

and then

”I find that hard to believe. Most don’t even know anything about the Roman Empire”

we live near Chester with Roman walls, Roman garden, the parade ground etc.

i did a build in Chester and was told should Roman remains be found all building work would cease immediately.

I used to teach Latin so quite often 😂

3peassuit · 12/09/2023 22:31

Every time he drives down a straight bit of road DH thanks the Romans for it.

Clefable · 12/09/2023 22:31

DH is now quizzing me about my own thoughts on the Roman Empire. I probably think about it once a month or so. Maybe more actually. When I'm on a really long straight road I have to comment on it (same as when you see cows in a field and have to shout COWS) so that's probably like 80% of my Roman Empire headspace.

10Minutestobedtime · 12/09/2023 22:32

DH's response was 'Western or Eastern' 🤓

Palindrone · 12/09/2023 22:36

I've just asked DH and he responded: At least six times per minute.

To be fair he's lead history coordinator in a school on high Ofsted alert and he's currently overhauling the history curriculum in preparation for a deep dive into how the subject's taught to the pupils.

Conversely, I can't remember the last time I thought about the Roman Empire.

I can't confirm or deny where this correlates to the disparity with which we think about other matters 😂
