How often does your OH think about the Roman Empire?

Just for fun

saw on Facebook a post saying that men think about the Roman Empire every day. The woman asked her husband and he said this was true and that he thinks about it daily. The comments was people asking their husbands how often they think about the Roman Empire with some very funny responses 😂

So, I’ll start .., I’ve just asked DH and he said “at least twice a week, why?”

would love to hear other Responses to this random question

“how often do you think about the Roman Empire?”

interesting that so many people think about the Roman Empire more often than the British empire which was far more recent!

He’s come to bed now so I’ve been able to dig a little deeper into what he’s actually thinking about when he does think about it … apparently it’s ‘mostly aqueducts, sometimes just roads’.

I said I thought it would be more about the politics, personalities, decline and fall etc - he said no, ‘we all know what happened with the fall of Rome, it’s well documented’ - so there you go guys, no need to think about it any further!

😆
Actually I've loved Roman plumbing since I was a child. I used to love visiting the hypocaust at St Alban's when I was little.

I’m asking the question in the morning, personally I think about probably once a week, a few times a month. We are surrounded, living over the top or near settlements 😂🏛️🏺

Floopyfloop · 12/09/2023 22:39

My husband said “once a year” not sure if it’s on a specific day 🤣

I think about the British Empire several times a week.

Tavimama · 12/09/2023 22:40

Mine just said he 'couldn't tell me'. However, he thinks about various aspects of WWII at least once a day.

If I'm honest, I probably think about the Roman Empire more often than he does - probably a couple of times a week as its an interest of mine.

@MoxieFox @Lifeomars the first episode of the Dan Snow documentary series How the Celts Saved Britain was rebroadcast the other day on BBC4 and is back on iPlayer for a bit - very interesting on Ireland c400-800AD.

I have a thing like the Sistern Chapel screaming woman but where I burst into tears if I hear about Boudicca, too. When my DS was small I used to take him to the Museum of London and I'd start crying whenever Boudicca's grave came up, had to hide in the loo and blow my nose lots.

Is it a euphemism for something else?

That’s what I was wondering!

Tinytigertail · 12/09/2023 22:42

DH grinned sheepishly and said 'at least once a month '

We haven't got the data on this thread to come to a conclusion on that though.

If I were queen of MN the first thing I'd implement is a really good polling system linked to an graphing tool. And then I'd put up a multi dimensional poll comparing everyone's frequency of pondering various empires.

Catastrophejane · 12/09/2023 22:42

I’ve thought about it at least 4 times this week and it’s only Wednesday:

Sunday - driving along A road that was originally Roman road.
tuesday- article on modern reconstructions of Roman faces
Tuesday afternoon- Pompeii
Today- dative and genitive cases in German lead to thinking about life of Brian graffiti scene !

Poke · 12/09/2023 22:42

Mine said, ‘erm I dunno. I don’t count.’

When pressed, he said, ‘probably about once a month, but does it count if I look at Roman numerals on a clock?’

Probably pretty often, tbh. And especially at the moment, coz we've been watching "I Claudius"!

I now need to rewatch I Claudius!

blueshoes · 12/09/2023 22:43

"Very Rarely"

SleepingStandingUp · 12/09/2023 22:44

No I don't think about it, it's not my favourite Empire... the Mayan Empire is the best. I think about that occasionally

MoreInputNeeded · 12/09/2023 22:44

I can't deny I missed the # of times because I ended up tuning out partway through his re-enactment from Hitchhikers and an excerpt from somebody's present from an age ago: Attila The Hun: Barbarian Terror and the Fall of the Roman Empire

Mr. Prosser

Mr. L. Prosser was a chronically anxious human city council worker and direct descendant of Genghis Khan who demolished Arthur Dent's house to make way for a bypass, mere minutes before he was killed when the Vogons destroyed the Earth to make way for...

Sent the text: how often do you think about the roman empire and got an immediate phone call "what's that all about?" Followed by "from time to time", followed by "how much wine have you had?". Then he wittered on about "cleopatra" (reminded him she was Egyptian, not roman). Then he changed the subject.

I think about the British Empire several times a week.

Me too. I was reading about those Asian hornets and for some reason it made me think that the Black and Gold striped paint job on the sailing war ships of the British Empire would have looked very distinctive and terrifying…like giant sea hornets 🐝

Every couple of months over here. Surprised, really.

Very cool! I will take a look.

ZickZack · 12/09/2023 22:48

"not often".

WhycantIkeepthisbloodyplantalive · 12/09/2023 22:48

My DH exact response was as follows:

'Why the hell are you asking me that?!' Shock on his face. 'No reallly, why are you asking me that?,I've just been talking about the Roman Empire on Chat GBT,how did you know?!'.

Great question, the response made me laugh.

HiBarbie · 12/09/2023 22:48

"Quite often", "a couple of times a month".

GetWhatYouWant · 12/09/2023 22:49

Thinking about this thread has reminded me that tomorrow will be the Ides of September - a rhyme from school Latin to remember which days are the Nones and Ides has popped into my head- "In March, July, October, May, the Nones the 7th, the Ides the 15th day"!
