How often does your OH think about the Roman Empire?

Just for fun

saw on Facebook a post saying that men think about the Roman Empire every day. The woman asked her husband and he said this was true and that he thinks about it daily. The comments was people asking their husbands how often they think about the Roman Empire with some very funny responses 😂

So, I’ll start .., I’ve just asked DH and he said “at least twice a week, why?”

would love to hear other Responses to this random question

“how often do you think about the Roman Empire?”

Why just the empire though? Does nobody ever think of the Roman republic? Arguably more.interesting as a period.

I do think about Genghis Khan a lot. Mainly because I like the words/names Chingis and Temujin and like to say them in my head!!!!!

Also love those - Radio4's particularly good for thatGrinBlush

Hmm. People seem to love the Romans/empire yet criticise the British empire for very similar things, land grabs, slavery, opression of local peoples, domination, wars etc etc

Perhaps they just did it more stylishly that we did!

I don’t think anyone loves the Romans for their land grabs, slavery, oppression of local peoples, domination, wars and so on.

gluttonousgoldbug · 12/09/2023 21:57

Omg I'm dying! Just asked DH and he said daily!

When I asked what he thought about he said "The toilets. Pooping in a room full of people and using sponge to wipe"

At least he's regular! 😂

BetterWithPockets · 12/09/2023 22:00

Occasionally, apparently, here. But like a PP’s DH, mine didn’t wonder why I was asking! (I think he’s used to me suddenly asking something quite random TBH…)

SeasonalWitch · 12/09/2023 22:00

Not sure about DH but I certainly think of something about or connected to the Roman Empire every other day or more.

I can’t imagine NOT being reminded of it in some way on the regular via local history, art, literature, stoic quotes on social media, language, architecture, travel, inventions, most museums have something Roman, there’s often some article or tv programme with a reference.

Why not? Slavery was a totally normal thing in every part of the world until the 1800s, so while it's not something to specifically love about the Roman Empire, it's not necessarily something to absolutely hate them for either.

The other parts, though...they're a big part of the reason for the civilisation of a huge proportion of the world - the UK included. The details may be questionable, but the result on average was an increase in quality of life.

WarriorN · 12/09/2023 22:01

I think about it at least once a week actually!

Lots of Roman stuff around here, it's always popping up on various news things and my kids love horrible histories

AldiDupes · 12/09/2023 22:01

Ex dp is Greek so probably several times an hour. Whilst shaking his fist at the sky.

I daren't ask him though. It'd kick off a spontaneous history monologue that absolutely no one asked for.

SiouxseeSioux · 12/09/2023 22:03

Is it a euphemism for something else? I'd love to know. I've even googled it to make sure I've not misunderstood the question

TheTempest · 12/09/2023 22:03

DH said quite a bit and and then at least weekly, but sometimes daily. Who knew?!

EllaDisenchanted · 12/09/2023 22:03

"umm. Never"

Bit disappointed tbh

Well thats empire building in the old days for you. The things that went alongside that, roads, government etc etc were just side issues, ultimately to build an empire back then and right up to last century really, meant doing all those things.

Its only in modern times that building an empire is by means of politics and economics and not all those things.

xogossipgirlxo · 12/09/2023 22:04

Mine said 10x a month 😵‍💫

AnotherExpatKiwi · 12/09/2023 22:04

Too funny. My DH, who’s gone on holiday with his mother to Wales, said “We were discussing aspects of it on Saturday’s drive! Fairly regularly I’d say, possibly due to having been born in Verulamium”. (That’s St Albans). 😆.

Araminta34 · 12/09/2023 22:05

I think about it a lot just now, after binge watching I Claudius. He is named I Clavdivs in our house.

Barnowlsandbluebells · 12/09/2023 22:05

EveryOtherNameTaken · 12/09/2023 21:32

I love we're all asking 😂
I got a 'Maybe once in the last 4 years'.
He said he thought mostly about Vikings.
😂

I think about Vikings quite a lot.

Vetoncall · 12/09/2023 22:06

"How often do you think about the Roman Empire?'
'Every day'
'Really??'
'No'

That's how the conversation just went here. Apparently the last time was when he read some book last year. He's a scientist though, and he's Canadian, so maybe he doesn't feel the European/historical connection 🤷‍♀️😄

Lastnightschips · 12/09/2023 22:06

13-year old DS2 just laughed and said ‘hardly ever’, followed by ‘I think about the Greeks though’.

lifeturnsonadime · 12/09/2023 22:06

I just asked my teenage DS and he said I'd got that off social media!

He does, incidentally, think about it quite a lot as he's doing Classics A Level, DH said he thinks about it infrequently only really if he's listening to podcasts.

MissingMoominMamma · 12/09/2023 22:07

Then he phoned to ask whether I’d been drinking…

I think about the Roman Empire though. Probably about 5 times a year.
