How often does your OH think about the Roman Empire?

Just for fun

saw on Facebook a post saying that men think about the Roman Empire every day. The woman asked her husband and he said this was true and that he thinks about it daily. The comments was people asking their husbands how often they think about the Roman Empire with some very funny responses 😂

So, I’ll start .., I’ve just asked DH and he said “at least twice a week, why?”

would love to hear other Responses to this random question

“how often do you think about the Roman Empire?”

"Quite frequently" according to my DH.

But then I've thought about and I reckon it crosses my mind fairly regularly as well. This is quite a revelation.

SheWentWest · 12/09/2023 21:46

My partner was reading a fiction book about the Roman Empire on holiday last week 😂

DaisyWaldron · 12/09/2023 21:47

DD is studying ancient history so we've been having fairly regular chats about the Roman Empire.

southlondoner02 · 12/09/2023 21:48

Rarely if ever apparently. And then asked what about the Roman Empire are these men thinking about?

The Romans got to Ireland but decided not to invade because it was more profitable to trade with Ireland as a free partner than to have to invade, conquer, put down insurrections and garrison it. By the time they finished most of Great Britain (they didn’t get all of it) the Empire was already in decline.

I never knew that, am now going to read up on it as I am a bit shocked by my ignorance.

ZadocPDederick · 12/09/2023 21:48

Response was "Sometimes - maybe once a week - it all depends". I don't think it takes the research much further.

Lantyslee · 12/09/2023 21:48

DH "about once a year". Me and DS20 looked sceptical and said we both thought about it at least once/month and surely it's more often.

I read an interview with Iggy Pop recently who said the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Gibbons is one of his favourite books and he sees it as a parable of modern America so I guess he thinks about it fairly frequently.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 12/09/2023 21:48

Can someone please explain what I am missing about this? I am really confused.

CUDet · 12/09/2023 21:49

"All the time" "What would the Romans do?" Was my DH's reply. He does like reading about the Romans.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 12/09/2023 21:50

I feel like I did when I stumbled across a Mornington Crescent thread for the first time and everyone knew what was going on apart from me.

I don't think it's a code word for anything naughty although I could be wrong. There is a great deal of Roman stuff in the UK such as roads, Palaces and ancient baths, so maybe that's it? Or I could just be be a naive buffoon....

the80sweregreat · 12/09/2023 21:24

The Romans were amazing really.
Just sad it had to end as it did

Hmm. People seem to love the Romans/empire yet criticise the British empire for very similar things, land grabs, slavery, opression of local peoples, domination, wars etc etc

Perhaps they just did it more stylishly that we did!

It’s the original. It’s on I player and is fantastic. John hurt as Caligula is bonkers.
I’m loving it!

I'm loving the current I "Clavdivs" love.

My late dad worked for the BBC and did a lot of the scenery for it. It was the job he was most proud of. He won an award for his work and the BBC arranged for us to have a colour TV so he could see his work 🥲

<outs self>

Anyway DH's reply: "all the time, okay, never" 🙄

Is it a euphanism?

😂 that was pretty much my DH’s response too.
Rarely apparently but then he has a terrible memory so wouldn’t remember anyway.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 12/09/2023 21:53

I haven't asked my DP yet, but he grew up and went to school in Jamaica and as far as I know didn't really learn European history, so going guess his answer would be never or rarely.

BionicEar · 12/09/2023 21:53

My DH said every couple of days. He likes their shiny helmets. 🤔😂

my DD friend just asked her BF and he says a few times a week.

None of the females in the room admitted to thinking about the Roman Empire.

I'd love to know too!

In the off-chance it was a litteral question, I'd say my DH is made to think about it quite a lot, because we seem to always have at least one child studying said Roman Empire at school at any given point 😂

Wakintoblueskies · 12/09/2023 21:54

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 12/09/2023 20:48

Dad - very often. Listed all the things he thinks about it.
Husband - monthly
Brother - thought about it today and thinks about it weekly.

I also assume its a euphemism and am enjoying the replies.

I can't believe you asked your father 😂

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 12/09/2023 21:54

About once a week, on average, but more at the moment because of I, Claudius on the telly.

Now to find the Mornington Crescent thread …

Querypost · 12/09/2023 21:55

"never! ... what a strange question"

SpongeBobSquarePantaloons · 12/09/2023 21:55

"I don’t. I have a life."

That's me told Grin

Nanaof1 · 12/09/2023 21:55

Unless someone names a local coffee house or bakery "The Roman Empire", I feel quite safe to say my DH wouldn't have a thought of it.

I haven't thought about it at all. Until you mentioned it. Which means now I will be thinking about it way too much. I'm craving a Caesar salad even as I type this.

CClaire · 12/09/2023 21:55

My H said ‘never’. Im quite deflated tbh and not sure I believe him.

PurpleChrayne · 12/09/2023 21:55

My DH said weekly. But he thinks about the Ottoman Empire daily.

As for me, I think about the British Empire daily, as I'm a postcolonialist academic.

ZebraLyghts · 12/09/2023 21:55

I'm a woman and I think about it a lot!
