To ask for an explanation for wtf just happened? **MNHQ UPDATE: Mystery solved!**

I'm seriously creeped out and can't figure out a rational explanation so I'm hoping someone can!

Sitting in the kitchen, eating dinner when a black shape ran past my legs, close enough that I felt it pass. Figured it was my cat at first but when I stood up, she was sitting on the windowsill!

The dark shape ran into the living room where my partner is (he saw it too, because he shouted me!)

It apparently jumped on the sideboard and vanished in front of his eyes. There's nowhere it could go - the sideboard is solid oak on a solid stone wall.

The dog is now going mental at the sideboard like there's something there (if there is, we can't find it!)

I'm genuinely creeped out - anyone have a rational explanation? What the hell did we see?

@Ineke

No to ghost, could be rat. If dog is interested, rat seems likely. PS Ghosts are not real.
Yes they are.

We're all wrong!

It was next door's bloody rabbit! Sitting watching Call the Midwife and the damn thing hopped out from behind the TV unit. Nearly gave me a bloody heart attack!

Ahhhhh 😍
mamabear715 · 14/02/2022 18:17

Yes, they are!
But am glad all is solved & it was a cute bunny! My guess was going to be a neighbour's cat.. one sauntered into my house one sunny day, obviously without my knowledge, I saw it in the hall, screamed, and my dog came to save me & savage the cat.. who knew cats could jump so high? ;-) It got away unscathed! :-)

angellamb · 14/02/2022 18:17

I tend to agree with ghost cat, you may go on to see it regularly, carry on with whatever you're doing.

KisstheTeapot14 · 14/02/2022 18:20

@BruceAndNosh

It was the remnants of Boris's reputation. Moves fast, difficult to see then disappears without a trace
Love this. ^^
KisstheTeapot14 · 14/02/2022 18:22

Glad it was a fluffy bunny and not a f*cking huge spider as someone suggested up thread.

Would much rather have a ghost than a spider that big!

fussyhousewife · 14/02/2022 18:53

A rat can jump 36 inches vertically and are said to be expert jumpers if your unit is 30 inches it is possible it made that and skidded over the back. They can fall from quite a height without injury.

This thread reminds me of the time a few years ago when we were having our kitchen done at the same time as a full rewire of the house. Had the back and front doors open all day and loads of boxes with our kitchen cupboards inside piled up in the middle of the kitchen but no lights available in there due to the rewire. I walked into the kitchen in the early evening and could have sworn I saw a small black cat sitting on top of a box but looked everywhere around the boxes with torches and my husband convinced me it must have been a shadow. I still felt that it wasn't a shadow but had to accept that i was wrong. I was watching TV a few hours later with the living room door open and a small black cat casually walked past the doorway and sat in the hall. As soon as I spoke to tell my husband that the cat was real, it ran off. My husband didn't believe me! He almost convinced me that I was going crazy. Went back into the kitchen and investigated with the torches and still couldn't see anything. I was adamant that the cat was real and I would find it, so I told my husband to be quiet and just started talking in a cutesy cat voice for a little while and it just appeared from within the pile of boxes and came over for a fuss. I think that was the most smug 'told you so' I've ever had the pleasure of uttering.

I’m glad you solved the mystery OP but I’m a bit disappointed that you don’t have a ghost cat, I love a good woo thread 😂

BreakingUpWithMyPhone · 14/02/2022 19:14

OMG, I wish a rabbit would break into my house.

@AnnieSnap

What’s with all of the ‘ghost cat’ suggestions. So many posters have said that, it’s like it’s a real thing 😮🤷‍♀️
It feels like it is real 🤷‍♀️

Ex dcat was black had a lot of siblings we literally picked him by putting our hands in and pulling one out he got lonely so we got him a half brother shortly after! I saw a group of black kittens years later online I ummed and ahhed about messaging all day went to bed dreamed of purring got cat number one went back for cat number two ended up with cat number three! All black cats and it definitely feels like there is a fourth cat playing in the background joining in with zoomies!

GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin Blooming fluffy bunny. Glad it wasn’t a rat, bat or ghost cat Wink
Wonnle · 14/02/2022 20:45

It was The Shuck !

LoveFall · 14/02/2022 20:48

Glad yours was a bunny. Last week we had a bat. A big one. The dog was going crazy. DH kept saying it's a bird. After much kerfuffle it flew out the patio door, which I promptly closed.

It was definitely a bat.

So weird in February.

Dog took forever to stop rumbling and woofing. Poor thing. He still checks under the table.

Such a cute rabbit and so satisfying to have a thread with a resolution - well done OP! You should get a MN banner or badge Grin

Wallabyone · 14/02/2022 21:19

Just chuckling out loud to this thread 😂😂 What a great update!

FlouncerSIT · 14/02/2022 21:53

This has been such a lovely, fun thread - I can't tell you how relieved I am that it was next door's bunny!!

Vimto1991 · 14/02/2022 21:57

I am so glad you found out it was a bunny (although how did it get in your house), as honestly, I’m home alone tonight, and I was prepared to sleep with the lights on after reading that and all the ghost comments. 😳

Tomasinabombadil · 14/02/2022 22:13

Good thing that the rabbit🐇 came into your house, if it had stayed outside then foxy woxy🦊 would have probably finished it off.🙄

The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Grin

ps - I think there is such a thing as ghost cats. I was lying in bed one night and felt a cat walk across the foot of the bed and jump off. No cat in the house as we were without one at the time - she'd recently passed away. It was definitely her, the sensation of a cat walking across a bed when you're in it is unmistakable. She's been back again since, and rubbed herself across my leg when I was sitting at the dining table. I even bent down to stroke her...

HaveringWavering · 14/02/2022 23:10

But did it really jump up on the sideboard? And if so, how did it disappear?

WeirdlyKind · 14/02/2022 23:22

I have a feeling it jumped towards the sideboard rather than on it and my partner just thought it had jumped on it, if that makes sense?

OP posts:
HaveringWavering · 14/02/2022 23:24

It does!

What did Pippin’s owners say when you took him back?
