To ask for an explanation for wtf just happened? **MNHQ UPDATE: Mystery solved!**

I'm seriously creeped out and can't figure out a rational explanation so I'm hoping someone can!

Sitting in the kitchen, eating dinner when a black shape ran past my legs, close enough that I felt it pass. Figured it was my cat at first but when I stood up, she was sitting on the windowsill!

The dark shape ran into the living room where my partner is (he saw it too, because he shouted me!)

It apparently jumped on the sideboard and vanished in front of his eyes. There's nowhere it could go - the sideboard is solid oak on a solid stone wall.

The dog is now going mental at the sideboard like there's something there (if there is, we can't find it!)

I'm genuinely creeped out - anyone have a rational explanation? What the hell did we see?

Did you leave washing out over night to get darked in and then brought it in? Perhaps several spider willies brushed past you, that would upset any dog 😂😂😂

CharacterForming · 14/02/2022 23:31

Blimey, lucky rabbit in a house with a terrier.

Panda8383 · 14/02/2022 23:58

That’s so funny 😂 least you’ve got an answer to what it was and thankfully nothing spooky 🤣

youvegottenminuteslynn · 15/02/2022 00:17

Pippin is absolutely gorgeous! And bloody lucky if you have a terrier in the house!

ImprobablePuffin · 15/02/2022 00:40

Glad it wasn’t a rat, bat or ghost cat

There's a children's story in there somewhere

SofiaAmes · 15/02/2022 00:51

Doesn't that remind you of that movie from the 80's ...Gregory's Girl..where a rabbit randomly hops across the kitchen counter in one scene.

ThinWomansBrain · 15/02/2022 01:09

what a sweetie
my previous cat used to occasionally jump out of the French windows, and into a garden next door - she'd get scared coming back if I didn't go and find her, and jump into the first balcony she got to, which was the flat next door, they sort of got used to it, but gut curdling screams the first time.

Namechangenumber23 · 15/02/2022 02:23

Surprise rabbit! That would make my year!😂😍 worthy of nomination for classics I feel.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 15/02/2022 03:18

Oh, what a handsome Bun!

Penvelopey · 15/02/2022 06:30

This thread gave me a much needed smile. Thank you.

Plainly a rat - they can be bigger than you imagine - fattened up on all that dumped junk food - and are very very agile - I was being shown into a hotel bedroom about 6 floors up in Vietnam when a rat jumped out the window as we opened the door - I was huge. Black and very very fast

Fetchthevet · 15/02/2022 16:09

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit, rabbit... it was a rabbit everyone, you can stop guessing now!

@Bertiebiscuit

No, plainly not a rat.

There is even a photo (and a massive CLUE that there might be an update in the thread title)

Rats can leap up to 12 feet, so yes. probably a rat.

SunnySideDownBriefly · 15/02/2022 19:54

Ahhh, this is such a heart-warming thread but wtf to your neighbour's bunny gatecrashing! Hilarious!

Bertiebiscuit · 15/02/2022 20:12

me109f · 15/02/2022 23:22

Probably a rat. They are black. Varmints can disappear into tiny gaps. I have rats outside but not inside. Occasionally mice get in and are very difficult to trap or clobber. I once saw a mouse climbing up my outside brickwork so they can nip into open windows, and gaps around piping.

watcherintherye · 16/02/2022 00:08

Varmints can disappear into tiny gaps.

Shouldn’t that be ‘pesky varmints’?

I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen the word used on MN!

@WeirdlyKind

We're all wrong!

It was next door's bloody rabbit! Sitting watching Call the Midwife and the damn thing hopped out from behind the TV unit. Nearly gave me a bloody heart attack!

That's hilarious! Glad you got an answer. And such a cute one too.
