What's the broken thing in your house that everyone just puts up with?

I'll start. We have a three legged Henry Hoover, and any time anyone hoovers you hear lots of banging and "fuck offs" as it falls over every 3 seconds. It's been like it for five years and rather than replacing it we all have just grown to accept our disabled Henry.

What's that broken thing in your house that everyone just accepts and lives with, despite how annoying it may be? I feel every family must have one Grin

@RandomCatGenerator

Sorry that should be to *@catwomando*o. How is there a *@catwomando* and a catwomandoo on this thread?!
Oooh do I have a doppelgänger?
RandomCatGenerator · 22/01/2022 18:56

There’s a @catwomandoo and a @catwomando!

Up until recently the loo seat upstairs didn't wobble every time- oh no. It lulled you into a false sense of security then every 8 sittings or so it would slide around so violently it was like trying to pee while taming a mechanical bull.

Whisk has broken, but I keep pushing the prong back in to it's hole, until it pings back out again. It hasn't occurred to me to buy another one!

Door handles are battery powered and every time it rains the back one beeps in alarm over and over again, rather than find the problem, we adorn it with a plastic bag.

Don't get me started on the kitchen kickboards that fall down if you whisper too loudly in their direction!

My husband.

Tap drips but bad enough to change the washer, 🤬 I do most of my DIY but electric and plumbing I leave for him as it's his actual job. Did wait 7years for outside tap so cant rush him

My kitchen scales. I have lost the battery cover so keep having to tape it down and it keeps turning off mid weighing! I swear at the bloody thing every time and then wipe it down and pop it away for next time.

Cut a piece of thick cardboard to fit and tape that to it?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/07/2022 17:04

The cabinet door of our integrated dishwasher is peeling away due to steam at the top. It’s held together by parcel tape.

WorriedMillie · 14/07/2022 22:00

Our front door. Unless you put your full weight being/in front of it to close it, it doesn’t close properly and gets blown open (usually in the middle of the night)
our oven cooks unevenly
our toaster toasts unevenly
the shower pump comes on at random times, so has to be switched on/off when someone wants a shower

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/07/2022 10:03

a broken chair
we had a guest the other day and dh had to fix the chair to sit on it, at long last!

The motion sensor lights on my treacherous front steps. Stopped working a couple of weeks after the warranty ran out. Still too annoyed to replace them but figure it'll be spring soon anyway!

Guess what still hasn't been replaced 😄

SheeplessAndCounting · 20/07/2022 21:36

Leaky fridge and tap, some windows that won't lock, an internal door that has to be slammed several times before it closes. All irritate me most days!

Had a fancy chrome tall towel rail fitted when we had the bathroom redone a few years ago. Bloody thing doesn't even get up to blood temperature. Might as well get showered outside its so cold. So, we heat up an oil filled radiator on the landing then, using oven gloves, quickly drag it into the bathroom and shut the door. By the time I've made my cuppa its warmed the room enough to be tolerable.

I am weeping at you using oven gloves 🧤 🤪

The toilet seat downstairs is lethal but that's my husband's pooping loo so I rarely use it. If he's happy then I'm not buying a new one! Also one of the kitchen drawer front falls off when you open it. It's so god damn annoying!

justsaythanks · 24/07/2022 21:33

Shoe cabinet drawer above the shoe shelves opens itself slowly during the day.
Kick boards are not attached AT ALL
Bathroom window lock
Is fooked

RoseMartha · 25/07/2022 23:04

Lots of my furniture.

The bed-frame has had it really. Mattress is ok as newer.

My bedside table all chipped.

My exh put his knee through the back of the chest of drawers a few years ago. I figured it doesn't show.

My work desk has seen better days.

A cupboard in my bedroom doesn't shut unless I use an elastic band on the handles.

Also one end of the sofa has lost its springs.

And tv table is chewed from when the dc's were teething (now teens) and the door on it is broken and sort of wedged shut.

There's no electricity working in the main lights in my hallway and lounge.
It's been like this since xmas 2019.
I bought a battery operated light that's stuck to the wall just above the light switch in the hallway and I've got 6 lamps in the lounge.

Not in the house but the car. The battery died completely during lockdown when we never used it. Ford Assistance came out before freedom day and replaced the battery, no fuss, works fine…..except that the date on the clock mysteriously rewound to 2014. *
The actual clock is fine, we can reset it when the clocks go forward and back, but the date is forever 8 and a bit years ago. It changes, but it never catches up, so it is now 22 March 2016.
No one can fix it, we have been through the manual but this seems not to be recognised problem, the garage men are intrigued but defeated, the Ford dealership would like to look at my ( considerable) expense, so no.

frankly I don’t care, I just wish someone could reset me to eight years ago as well.
( * the car is actually a year older than the new start date…..)

OceanbreezeSun · 26/07/2022 14:23

Another toilet seat one….
At my mum & dads house, the downstairs toilet has had a broken and cracked seat for about 5 years 🤣
It’s my dads special pooing toilet and he’s territorial about his toilet (my ma refuses to go in!)
It’s also got about 4 resident spiders in which my pa gleefully says stops guests off ever using it.

The catch on the lid of the big Brabantia kitchen bin has been broken for about 3 years. It's weighed down by a pair of old oven gloves which have to be removed everything there is something to throw away.

Brabantia bins have a 10 year guarantee. I rang their customer service number to complain about the broken catch on our bin lid. I had to post my broken bin lid to them & then they sent out a whole new lid.

Ours has been broken for ages, maybe four or five years since DD threw a tennis ball at it. We just leave it open. The DC offer to buy a new lid/new bin for me for Christmas every year, because that's what every woman desires deep down. Hmm

Cameleongirl · 02/10/2022 21:07

We have one of those pullout bins like a drawer, but it broke over the summer. The dog has realized that the bin is now accessible so he’s constantly extracting things from it. I’m waiting for DH to fix it and he’s probably waiting for me to do it. 😂

You know you could just buy a new catch for a couple of quid?

<misses point of thread>

Yes but you need to source a round to-it before you have the motivation to go out and buy a new catch. Some households are short on round to-its. 😉

Dreikanter · 03/10/2022 08:59

Ah, I have the round-to-it for ordering the replacement parts, but I’m missing the round-to-it on fitting them.

Cutlery draw catch has been broken for at least 2 years, and the replacement catch arrived about a week after it broke.
