What's the broken thing in your house that everyone just puts up with?

I'll start. We have a three legged Henry Hoover, and any time anyone hoovers you hear lots of banging and "fuck offs" as it falls over every 3 seconds. It's been like it for five years and rather than replacing it we all have just grown to accept our disabled Henry.

What's that broken thing in your house that everyone just accepts and lives with, despite how annoying it may be? I feel every family must have one Grin

Anything up to 39c is freezing cold, anything above 40c is scalding hot. If you can twist the knob very carefully to about 39.7c you can enjoy a lovely warm shower though!

THIS! Fucking shower.

Until recently - the clothes airer which would collapse unless perfectly loaded with the weight spread evenly. Recently bought a new one and I can’t believe how much difference it makes to my life!

My parents - the rear view mirror in their car falls off if you touch it. So everyone just leaves it in the same position (despite height differences of drivers).

Mine was like this for a while, think it happened after the windscreen needed replacing, I would try to adjust it and it would come off it my hands - eventually I decided that it needed more brute force and thankfully that seemed to do the trick. I still regard it with a very suspicious eye though.
@thenightsky oh, I only have one other suggestion. Turn all the other radiators off and see if your towel radiator heats up. If it doesn't... it'll be summer in a few months. Wink
I'm going to try that this weekend. Trouble is, there's about 4 rads that won't turn off so I will need pliers. But will persevere.

Thanks for the nominations to move this to Classics. We'll shift it over now.

Steamer lid has a bottle opener for a lid handle Grin
I really enjoyed this

@Hmmhowhardtochooseaname

Rented flat, the landlord paid for a professional oven clean at the start of my tenancy and they cleaned the numbers off the dials for the hob and also the little diagrams which show which ring each knob is for. Actually took me a few months to notice so I felt too embarrassed to complain. (Toilet seats are okay though)
You can buy new stickers
Ddot · 18/01/2022 13:32

Toilet seat is forever coming loose. You plonk your bum down and when you least expect it, it moves, just a little but enought to shock the shit out if you. Why does it scare me so much, its not like I'm going to fall from a great hight. 🤣🤣

SquidMonkey · 19/01/2022 05:16

I'm the main thing that is broken in our house. 🤣

But also shelves, curtain rails, locks, lights, leaking gutters etc: 🙄 A kitchen cupboard handle that even my children know can only be pulled from one side or it will come off (temporary bodge fix). There just aren't enough hours in the day to sort it all out and I am also rubbish at DIY. 😬🤦🏻‍♀️

Curlyreine · 19/01/2022 05:37

Dishwasher. Doesn't spin. Uses all the salt in two washes and never uses rinse aid liquid. The wheels have all fallen off. But it's a rented property and I can't report it as the house is always 'lived in' and I would die of shame if workmen had to come in.

So I wash everything by hand and rewash everything that DH puts in the dishwasher (every day. For 8 years.) 🙄🙄

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/01/2022 06:33

Light in the downstairs toilet has been knackered for over a year. Put up some sparkly Christmas lights in there and it’s so nice I CBA to fix the actual light..

LostInTheColonies · 19/01/2022 07:29

Not me but DParents... Lived in a reasonably swish new house, built for them, for 25 years with an outside tap that gave you an electric shock. They simply put a rubber glove on top of the tap and carried on.

The hot tap in thr laundry only worked if you turned the cold on for a while before adding hot. YEARS of it. Insisted it was fine.

Ddot · 19/01/2022 07:51

My old bed had three legs and a breeze bloc, due to a night of over zealous passion ahhh those were the days

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/01/2022 14:32

My new loo roll holder has made it upstairs, to the en suite, and is now on the side by the loo. It's still going to be there this time next year, isn't it?

KurtWilde · 19/01/2022 15:52

I fixed my loo seat!!!

Just wanted to share that with the group 😂

thenightsky · 20/01/2022 17:25

Dishwasher. Doesn't spin

Are you sure you're not confusing it with a washing machine? Confused Grin

I bought wheels for my dw on eBay and repaired it.

Still doesn't spin though.....

Our lounge light that's is wired in started to flash in and off. Couldn't really use it so resorted to more lamps Grin. Eventually after a few years asked a passing sparky who was in the house to fix it. Turns out the bulb was loose and needed screwing in Grin

For years we had an old style telly with an Ariel balanced precariously on the top. It only worked in a certain position and bastard cat kept knocking it off. We'd shout at visitors as they brushed past it 'careful of the aerial !!!!' All we needed was a new one that plugged into the back of the telly but never got round to it. Eventually the telly started smoking from the back and we bought a flat screen digital that didn't need an aerial. If it wasn't for that I'm convinced we'd still be there.

Nuts.

Having the shit scared out of you whilst on the loo is probably the best place for it. Grin
maz210 · 21/01/2022 07:55

The hob on our induction cooker - it's had a fault for years on one of the rings which it informs you of with a loud and constant bleeping whenever the hob is on. I'm so used to it now that I can't imagine cooking in silence.

borntobequiet · 21/01/2022 07:57

Maybe it’s a special feature.

It took me a while to work out the meaning of the spin on the dishwasher.

simonisnotme · 21/01/2022 18:50

flat roof leaks when the rain is in one direction although not a clue which direction, electric garage door that is on its last legs and only goes up when it feels like it, so many taps that need changing/new washers , bedroom radiator that H turned off now wont heat up properly and i'm sleeping in the room as i have covid (avoiding him)

yeowemetwelvepegs · 21/01/2022 20:26
