What's the broken thing in your house that everyone just puts up with?

I'll start. We have a three legged Henry Hoover, and any time anyone hoovers you hear lots of banging and "fuck offs" as it falls over every 3 seconds. It's been like it for five years and rather than replacing it we all have just grown to accept our disabled Henry.

What's that broken thing in your house that everyone just accepts and lives with, despite how annoying it may be? I feel every family must have one Grin

@Wreath21
YouTube videos show exactly how to fix the bath tap dripping, a UK video is best. You will need a spanner and a cloth and remember to switch off the water (stopcock under kitchen sink unit or near water meter) live in rental property but to save landlady from paying out I try to do stuff myself.
Bought new bathroom sink taps and did the job with spanner borrowed from next door. I felt proud of myself for doing the job well and the taps were only £25 from Homebase. Landlady paid for taps and sent flowers. 😊 I was 76 so I'm sure you being younger could have a go.

This thread is brilliant.
Our toilet seat works brilliantly (first time ever but the bathroom was new 3 years ago) but:
1 of 4 lights is gone
The fall on the shower tray is not enough and water gently seeps out of the door
The coldest setting on the mixer tap on the shower is a degree too warm for me (but perfect for DH, so we live without being able to make it any cooler).
The plaster round the sink tap is cracked
The toilet flush may or may not work depending on how it feels.
Other that that, it’s great!

bathroom door does not lock
the lock was removed after someone got stuck in there, no window, i am happy not to have a lock on the door

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/01/2022 08:28

i dont know how to change the thermostat for the central heating

Dumbledoresgirl · 12/01/2022 08:32

The flush on our downstairs loo. It works, but you have to know the knack of it and possibly only dh and I know it.

@WhosThatBehindTheFlask

The dishwasher. You can no longer changed cycle type from 'eco' - so that's all we use now Grin
Oh that reminds me, the dishwasher was here when we moved in 14 years ago, and it was far from new then. It's only ever worked on the one cycle which takes 90 mins, but everything comes out immaculately clean. I hate the dark brown plastic trim on it, but the bastard thing refuses to die.
velvetvixen · 12/01/2022 11:42

peaceanddove I remember the 1970s as being the brown and orange decade. Maybe it's due a revival so your dishwasher can be retro chic Grin

All of you with wobbly toilet seats want to get them fixed lest you end up in the Bathroom Bermuda Triangle:

The flooring in our kitchen is coming up, so if you walk without shoes you risk catching a toe or the bottom of your foot on the raised edge. We all just avoid walking over that spot where possible (except it's in the path of the door, so fairly difficult to avoid.)

Lunificent · 12/01/2022 13:02

I put the dishwasher on half cycle because it floods on full despite being cleaned out.

😊😊😊

Swear to God it must be early 80s? They built them to last back then.

The carpet on the stairs between the 1st and 2nd floors (extremely tall, thin London house) is ancient and stained and desperately needs replacing - but the previous owners built a massive bookcase covering the wall on the stairs which would need to be completely dismantled before we could do anything to the carpet. We can't even shampoo it as it shrinks if it gets wet.

PorkPieForStarters · 12/01/2022 14:11

The motion sensor lights on my treacherous front steps. Stopped working a couple of weeks after the warranty ran out. Still too annoyed to replace them but figure it'll be spring soon anyway!

LalalalalalaLand123 · 12/01/2022 15:05

God, too many things! Freezer, dishwasher and microwave all packed up entirely years ago; oven - for years only the top/grill element works; cupboard doors falling off. Want to replace the whole sodding kitchen rather than individual items, so waiting to win the lottery for that Confused

Mylittlepixie · 12/01/2022 15:43

My wardrobe has a mirror door and it has several huge cracks all the way across.
It was just there one day and nobody knows (admits) how it happened. Its been like that for 5 years and every time i look at it i think that i wanna get it fixed. DH agrees. But we never do.

LydiaGwilt · 12/01/2022 16:05

When my parents bought their first house they went to a second hand furniture shop and asked if they had any paintings. When the owner asked what sort they were looking for my father said 'one big enough to cover the hole in the wall'.

Flufftc · 12/01/2022 16:25

Our tumble dryer handle came off about 3 years ago we use a screwdriver to get it open! We now have a screwdriver that hangs up in the utility room for this purpose.

LoveFall · 12/01/2022 16:34

The toilet in our master bath ensuite takes it upon itself to run after flushing a couple of times a week. If you leave before waiting for the tank to completely fill, you might end up leaving it running for ages.

We just ignore it mostly. And if guests use our ensuite, we leave a note saying giggle the handle if it runs.

It would cost a fortune to get a plumber to fix it.

TallulahTumeric · 12/01/2022 17:19

My kitchen ceiling. Fell in last year following a leak on the bath taps. It's been fixed up but the rest of the ceiling is wallpapered (like that when we moved in!) so it needs re-plastering or re-wallpapering. I don't like upheaval and I can't be arsed.
Fan oven. Stopped working two years ago. I just use the non-fan side. Sometimes I 'try' the fan oven in case it's miraculously fixed itself.

ohsuzannah · 12/01/2022 17:30

@ProperVexed

Me!
I was just going to say the same lol!
mamaduckbone · 12/01/2022 18:14

The downstairs loo never stops refilling at a slow trickle so there is a screwdriver left permanently in there to turn the water on and off.
To be fair we have only lived here since august so it hasn't been years and years but bloody annoying nonetheless.

mamaduckbone · 12/01/2022 18:18

In our old house the hot and cold taps in the utility room sink were the wrong way round and the airing cupboard in the bathroom never had door handles. We lived there for 16 years.

I remember my ddad saying about the cupboard handles when I was heavily pregnant with ds1 that if we didn't fit them before the baby came we'd never get round to it. Yep! He died when ds was 2 so it was sort of a homage to him that we never did it (he also fitted the dodgy taps!)

Lilifer · 12/01/2022 18:24

Too many to mention - I've had same carpets and beds and mattresses for nearly 14 years now, is that bad, I'm guessing it is 🙈

suckingonchillidogs · 12/01/2022 18:49

Our (heavy) kitchen door has to be opened and closed veeerry carefully otherwise it comes off the hinges altogether.

There's a leak coming from the bottom of the fridge which leaves a little puddle on the floor (which I always step in when I have nothing on my feet).

Carpets need replacing but we have so much stuff there's nowhere to move things to leave it clear for carpet fitters.

Had a big leak in the skylight which left water damage on the ceiling but that will need internal scaffolding put up and we cannot be arsed.

We did have a new bathroom last year though which is lovely. I sit in there on the (non wonky) toilet and gaze at it while ignoring the shambles outside the bathroom door.

When our skylights were replaced they did it from the roof.
