What's the broken thing in your house that everyone just puts up with?

I'll start. We have a three legged Henry Hoover, and any time anyone hoovers you hear lots of banging and "fuck offs" as it falls over every 3 seconds. It's been like it for five years and rather than replacing it we all have just grown to accept our disabled Henry.

What's that broken thing in your house that everyone just accepts and lives with, despite how annoying it may be? I feel every family must have one Grin

Oh god loads…
The entire kitchen, basically - the gas oven is out by at least a gas mark so you always have to mentally adjust the setting.
The washing machine is plumbed in outside in a lean to and the drain overflows semi regularly.
Upstairs flush has to be wiggled in just the right way or it won’t work - always a fun one to explain to visitors.
Water pressure is non existent

SilverHairedCat · 10/01/2022 19:31

Henry is an utter bastard even with all his wheels intact. We traded him in for a new super powerful trades vacuum. Looks similar, but is suitable for cleaning up an actual construction site. I fucking love it.

Currently, the broken thing in the house is the curtain rail above the the patio door. It's hanging off precariously but it can fuck off until I think of a way to deal with it as it's the second time in a month with completely different drill holes each time.

Same as @OneMoreWish - loo seat hasn’t been right for three years since the tilers knocked it out of whack (they also did a crap job so the tiling so the damage to the loo seat adds salt to the wound). I’ve tried fixing it once but it just slips again. URGH!

Blinkingbatshit · 10/01/2022 19:32

@ProperVexed - I was just coming to say what you said🤣🙈

twisti · 10/01/2022 19:33

Toilet seats here too.
Previous owners put the same toilets in both bathrooms.
Despite tightening them all the time they still slide and hang off the toilet bowl.
Plus the pull cord for the light snapped and is only about 6 inches long now, so you have to stand on tiptoes to pull it.

Bedroom window. Forced it open in a panic when I saw my kitten on the roof of the house trying to get in (when she was too small to be out in the first place). Kitten, now two, was safely brought in, window lock still fucked as I need to replace the entire thing and I don’t have the money to do so.

TheTempest · 10/01/2022 19:33

Toilet seat in the main bathroom
Porch light
Patio door lock
My wardrobe slidey door.

All wooden flooring downstairs- but it’s going to cost a fortune to fix!

All have been broken for years and we just live with it 🤷‍♀️ You’ve inspired me now, I’m going to do at least the porch light and toilet seat!

Starlitexpress · 10/01/2022 19:33

The cat doesn't seem to know how to be a cat properly but we still put up with her odd quirks.........doesn't like boxes, tuna, cream, sleeping on the bed of a night.......as I said, broken!

LittleMouseOnTheFairy · 10/01/2022 19:34

The plinth in the kitchen held on with STRING because the washing machine is too big to be properly integrated. Landlords, eh?

Hellocatshome · 10/01/2022 19:34

The hot and cold on the bathroom taps are the wrong way round.
You can't put the dishwasher and the washing machine on at the same time otherwise it trips the electric.
You have to use your phone torch to go up stairs after dark as the landing light doesn't work, we have changed the bulb and it still doesn't work.
And you can't open the back door unless you have 'the knack'.

KurtWilde · 10/01/2022 19:34

The dripping bathroom sink tap that has been fixed countless times and now we just live with it.

Same goes for the side of the bath that just won't stay on (I even tried no more nails and it's having non of it)

The kitchen cupboard door that drops every now and then so you have to lift it to close them properly.

The cold side of the kitchen mixer tap that hasn't worked for ages. We drink bottled water anyway but it's still annoying!

The kitchen tiles that keep coming up and even no more nails won't keep in place so I've tacked them down and now the top of the tack catches on your socks when you walk across them.

@ooherrmissus14

It was the bath panel in our bathroom until our cat learned that if he sat on his back paws and banged on it with his front paws it sounded like one of those massive drums you get in an orchestra. Lovely being woken up by that at 3am every day. It had been broken for years but took just two months of our percussionist cat to force us to get it replaced.....

Oh I forgot the living room curtain rail. One side bracket has come out of the wall (again!!) but it’s still up so I’ve been ignoring it!

KurtWilde · 10/01/2022 19:36

Oh haha I forgot that one, mine is the same.

MulticatHouse · 10/01/2022 19:36

My husband is handy so can't think of anything.

grapewine · 10/01/2022 19:36

The windows are an absolute pain to close.

addictedtotheflats · 10/01/2022 19:36

Only 2 lights out of about 12 working on the ceiling light in the front room

Bath panel coming off at the end

Washing machine, only 3 out of about 10 programmes work 🙈

Garage door, kept shut with rocks at the bottom

Brigante9 · 10/01/2022 19:36

My utility room taps are the wrong way round. I noticed as soon as the plumber finished. He said it’s 50/50 where the cold/hot are in most houses. I told him that’s rubbish and it’s not a choice!

There’s a small hole in the conservatory roof so if it rains hard, a puddle is generated on the floor. I just chuck down a towel.

Lacedwithgrace · 10/01/2022 19:36

All our light switches are upside down. They're old enamel switches and bamboozled the electrician who put every single one upside down. We're used to it now but it's confusing to put lights on in other houses

BluebellsareBlue · 10/01/2022 19:36

Me

The hot and cold on the kitchen tap is the wrong way round. We're just used to it now
This. Except its the bathroom basin taps. I moved in 6 months ago, and the bathroom needed a total refit, plus I was lucky enough to know a bathroom fitter at mates rates... 5k later it's fixed.
TheSpiral · 10/01/2022 19:37

The downstairs loo keeps on flushing once flushed unless you bang it smartly on the cistern.
The upstairs loo by contrast flushes incredibly feebly and takes about four flushes to get rid of poo, and you have to wait for the cistern to fill up every time.

The shower door. It is wet room style (no shower tray, floor tiles) and leaks badly because the rubber seal won’t fit tight against the tiles and the drainage angle towards to plug is too shallow. Plus, because the door opens outwards across the tiles, it pushes out water. Oh, and you can’t put a bath mat down to step out because the door pushes it sway, so you have to do a little jump to the side. So badly designed. We’d love to fix it ,but for various reasons that means ripping the whole bathroom to bits.

Halfarsedjingler · 10/01/2022 19:37

The landing lights, we have lived here nearly 8 years and they have never worked Blush I actually got an electrian round to fix it last year along with another job, they did the other job and said they would come back to do the lights but were never seen again (nor was the bill either)
