I've just deliberately sent my husband on a wild goose chase

I may or may not have changed some details of said hobby and equipment.

He has a 'hobby' that he is obsessed with. Let's call it wild goose chasing. He watches YouTube videos about wild goose chasing, he reads magazines about wild goose chasing, he has all the gear ('infrared', 'thermal imaging' etc) and likes to go out wild goose chasing on a regular basis.

Recently he hasn't been wild goose chasing due to some disillusionment with his level of success in wild goose chasing and the lack of presence of gooses in the local area. This means every night, for many hours he has talked to me about wild goose chasing. Reads out bits from magazines to me. Talks endlessly. Listens to goose chasing videos in bed and comments on goose chasing techniques.

Tonight I went out on a run and happened to see a wild goose in an unusual location.

Nonchalantly told DH about it and would you know it, off his own back he's excitedly gone out to chase said wild goose.

I've now had two hours of mumsnetting and watching MAFS UK without someone talking about gooses through it. I expect DH is still delightedly crawling around on his hands and knees with his thermal imaging goggles looking for said wild goose.

Only I didn't see a wild goose.

AIBU?

AIBU to see it again tomorrow?

OP I think you are a genius!
DH is a petrol head and builds rally cars for fun. I knew this when I married him. I love him and he loves me. I fill the house with yarn and fabric and he fills the garage with cars and funny shaped bits of metal.
I have perfected the art of nodding and um humming in the right points when he tells me what he has done to the engine/suspension/wheels etc.
If I could 'spot' a rally car in the wild and send him out to find it I would.......... Especially when he's watching you tube videos of rally cars doing what rally cars do and yelling about people missing apexes and the showing me people missing apexes because I once was overly enthusiastic about rallying by mistake. (As in I got my navigators licence and went with him and felt horribly car sick and perfected the art of ripping off my crash helmet while simultabeously handing over time cards to marshals so I didn't throw up. Then we had kids and I was able to quit because one of us needed to live to raise them)
I do drive him demented by asking if he's fixed the flux capacitor yet.

Can we be friends? I reckon Otter; not the VIZ definition

KeeOe · 04/09/2021 23:54

I've skimmed the thread, but haven't seen what the OPs DH hobby is. Is he Monsieur X and does he have a Nom de Truffe?

LittleMG · 05/09/2021 12:21

Nothing wrong with that, you’ve given him a lovely day out and a purpose!

ErrolTheDragon · 05/09/2021 13:54

This thread has made Talk Roundup, and includes Soupy's Flapjack recipe. MNHQ may have applied some artistic license to Step 8.Grin

Gufo · 05/09/2021 14:13

Ghost hunter? DC were scared and a spiritual presence was felt. Or maybe I'm obsessed having binge watched Ghosts alllll week.

It's a genius technique that can be applied to a myriad of hobbies. Well played OP.

bemusedmoose · 06/09/2021 10:53

Gold medal to you!! 😂 I hope you feel suitably smug because you earned it!

whynotwhatknot · 06/09/2021 13:06

Anymore wild goose chasing op?

GooseyGooseyWander · 06/09/2021 17:30

@whynotwhatknot

Anymore wild goose chasing op?
Yes he went out on Friday night and had a very very successful night goose chasing. The most success he's ever had in 3years of semi-professional goose chasing.

I didn't want to post about it at the time because it was all just a bit too convenient and unbelievable. But it was true, I was presented with evidence after my perhaps too overly enthusiastic response to his Big News when he returned.

If I hadn't seen the evidence and I didn't already know that his internet capabilities only extend as far as YouTube and occasionally squinting at his emails (he has to ask me for help every time he wants to reply to one) I would have been suspicious that he had come across this thread.

As it is I'm as confident as I can be that he has never even heard of mumsnet ... mostly because I don't feel the need to talk endlessly about my 'hobbies'.

Oh dear OP.
This is going to be a body blow to the PP who dedicated themselves to exposing your bullying, machiavelian nature.

Perhaps they can justify some ongoing ire by letting you know that the end does not justify the means, & you are still a deceitful, hurtful, husband-baiting arse.

But I think it's a splendid result! - before your subterfuge, he'd been all gloomy & give-uppy about goose-spotting failures, hadn't he?

chillied · 06/09/2021 18:15

I love that your made-up spotting of a goose will never be found out, because as it turns out, there were gooses to be spotted.

I would LOVE to know what this hobby really is though

LolaLouLou · 06/09/2021 18:32

Fishing?

LolaLouLou · 06/09/2021 18:37

Stargazing? Metal detecting? Observing bat species?

whynotwhatknot · 06/09/2021 18:37

Oh dear op i am enjoying this thread though

thoughtso · 06/09/2021 19:44

I love you op and if you weren't already married I would propose (I have no hobbies though so you would get really bored of me being around. all. of. the. time

HebeMumsnet · 08/09/2021 10:09

Morning, everyone! We just thought we should let OP's husband know we've spotted another wild goose! It's over in Classics.

We're taking this over there right now. We'll bring the flask.

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 08/09/2021 10:29

Classics OP!

SingToTheSky · 08/09/2021 14:39

Woohoo! Well deserved. I’m just catching up now and I can’t even articulate why but this line just killed me 🤣

I have a DP that likes badgers, but not THAT much.

whynotwhatknot · 08/09/2021 19:40

Well done op!

GooseyGooseyWander · 08/09/2021 23:01

[Takes a bow]

I'm not sure how long I've been on mumsnet but it's definitely more than 10 years and I feel honoured to have finally posted on a classic thread rather than just reading it after the event.

In an entirely unrelated sequence of events can anyone recommend a 'non itchy balaclava'....
