Places you have visited with a strange vibe

Hi. I'm off to Saltburn (near Whitby) tomorrow and I feel sick. I visited last March. The weekend before the lockdown.

The place was so eerie. I was actually freaked out on the pier and had to run off it. I actually managed to sleep at night but I honestly didn't think I would.

The cottage was surrounded by cliffs and there was a Victorian lift and a small morgue by the beach. I'm not sure whether these have anything to do with it.

Has anyone else had this feeling from a place they have visited?

I'm very late to the party but was just mooching on mumsnet and totally agree with you re: Saltburn.

Also had the same feeling in a place called Sledmere which isn't far - my husband said exactly the same, just felt so, so off.

National Botanic Garden in West Wales shudder

On our wedding night we stayed in the bridal suite of the hotel our reception was held at, very old hotel, the Saracen’s Head in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, where they claim King Charles I stayed the night before he was given up to the Scottish. I did not sleep all night, kept my head under the covers, just felt something or someone was there, watching us. Not the best start to married life.

Culloden Moor...spooky even on a warm summer's day. And Larnach's Castle in Dunedin, NZ, especially the ballroom.

What's up with the botanical gardens of west Wales?

Pocklington near York. I love York but Pocklington gave me the creeps.

Ooh, I live near Pocklington and would love to know why!

Grange over Sands in Cumbria.

Why's that? My grandparents lived there, I loved it, thought it had a very relaxed vibe.

ElsieMc · 30/05/2022 15:13

Grange over Sands has an elderly vibe - large care home on the hill which looks creepy and has an odd vibe. Also the former open air swimming pool on the sea front is or was dilapidated and somewhat offputting but I believe there are plans afoot for regeneration. I don't find it scary though and not somewhere I would want to leave in a hurry. In fact property prices are surprisingly high and bouyant.

Millom has a stranger vibe but my family are from there and remained there most of their lives quite happily.

Warwick castle is a place I have got weird vibes from. Very interesting castle, but I had an experience there that made me bolt out of one of the tower rooms as a teenager. Would be interesting to see if I had the same experience again.

Every time I go anywhere near my local town centre.

Berlin me and DH both found it really full of sadness.

@ElsieMc

I went to that pool as a kid. Loved it. Very happy holidays in Grange. Hope they do regenerate it.

Can't say I remember the scary looking care home. I remember Grange as always being sunny and eating ice cream on the promenade 😁
