Places you have visited with a strange vibe

Hi. I'm off to Saltburn (near Whitby) tomorrow and I feel sick. I visited last March. The weekend before the lockdown.

The place was so eerie. I was actually freaked out on the pier and had to run off it. I actually managed to sleep at night but I honestly didn't think I would.

The cottage was surrounded by cliffs and there was a Victorian lift and a small morgue by the beach. I'm not sure whether these have anything to do with it.

Has anyone else had this feeling from a place they have visited?

Culloden. But probably because Im aware of its history.
I found Culloden (which I visited because of its history) to be almost suburban and with no atmosphere at all.

'Heptonstall above Hebdon Bridge is super atmospheric. A bit eerie, but mainly you feel the weight of history'

I agree. Isn't Sylvia Plath buried there?

Blueberry40 · 12/06/2021 07:43

Oradour-sur-Glane in France. Not surprising as a massacre took place there but the atmosphere was so heavy. Such a sad place, you could still feel the terror all those poor people must have felt hanging in the air Sad

Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin.

Matlock Bath in Derbyshire. It’s a seaside town, lost in time, in landlocked Derbyshire. It was sad, dark and in a valley. Really off vibes!

I've nominated this for classics. I hope others agree.

Edinburgh. So much darkness, so many graveyards but I love it ! Can't wait to visit again

Yes!

I had a housemate once who came from Townsville. She never mentioned it being weird, but maybe if you'e from there you don't find it weird? She is very nice and not a freak at all Grin

AutistGoth · 15/06/2021 12:25

I may need some help, though. It might benefit from other MNers nominating it for classics too, if you'd be so kind.

RevolvingPivot · 15/06/2021 20:44

I've never nominated anything for anything lol. How do I do that?

I am amazed that Beachy Head has not been mentioned..I was overcome with emotion both times I have been there..I could feel the pain and sadness of the people who lost their lives there.. and was hysterical when my husband went closer to the edge.. The whole area had such a feeling of sadness. I will never go there again..
That place affected me in the same way. There's a notorious suicide spot close to my home but I've never felt anything like this when I'm near it. Beautiful spot though Beachy Head is the signs are everywhere - crosses, memorials, flowers, phone numbers for the Samaritans - it seems to be wherever you look. There's also a very ominous (hardly misplaced) sense of fear and danger emanating from that jagged edge, but even so it seemed to draw people like flies to honey and my heart was constantly in my mouth through watching them get way too close.

My hair stands on end at the thought of taking my kid anywhere near the place. All-round awful vibe, aside from being really dangerous.

I know this through almost a decade of lurking! Smile

You "report" the thread and in the "reason why" box, ask if it can please be moved to classics.

Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh. I went on a 'ghost tour' there a few years ago. The tour itself wasn't scary at all. It was more historical, and in the Kirkyard itself they got someone to jump out at us for a cheap scare.

By the time we were leaving the Kirkyard I was chatting to someone else on the tour and had forgotten all about ghosts, including the alleged inhabitant of the Kirkyard, the MacKenzie poltergeist. Just as we reached the gate I stepped into an area of cold. It was like being hit by a freezing wind, but the weird thing was that it was cold inside, not outside. The evening was warm.

We went to the pub and things moved on. After a few drinks I went back to my hotel, where I was staying by myself. I went to sleep.

Then I woke up with a strong sensation of something being in the room.

It was such a powerful sensation that my heart was beating like mad. I even thought about going down to reception to tell them something was up. But of course I didn't.

I've never experienced anything like that before or since.

Later on, reading up on the MacKenzie Poltergeist, I've read stories of other people walking through cold spots, having a sensation of being watched and even finding deep scratches on their skin.

We did this tour. DH was terrified during the tour. I felt nothing. Next morning DH woke up with several deep and sore scratches all along his torso. I wasn't laughing at him then.

Naples.Very weird vibe. There was an awful feeling of doom and gloom over the place. I genuinely thought that there had been some major incident while I was there but other than road works I was told by multiple people there was nothing wrong. I have been in a fishing village where a boat was lost and the atmosphere was similar until it was known that all the people who had been aboard the boat were safe.

I felt like this in Naples too.
