Places you have visited with a strange vibe

Hi. I'm off to Saltburn (near Whitby) tomorrow and I feel sick. I visited last March. The weekend before the lockdown.

The place was so eerie. I was actually freaked out on the pier and had to run off it. I actually managed to sleep at night but I honestly didn't think I would.

The cottage was surrounded by cliffs and there was a Victorian lift and a small morgue by the beach. I'm not sure whether these have anything to do with it.

Has anyone else had this feeling from a place they have visited?

Glastonbury was odd. Beamish open air museum makes my skin crawl although that may be because I cant cope with people dressed up pretending to be from another time.

Cattenberg · 02/06/2021 22:24

I remember a similar thread a few weeks ago. The West Country was frequently mentioned, including several places in Somerset.

Hellocatshome · 02/06/2021 22:25

with the red building thats the weird cliff side tram thing (it has a posh name)

whiteroseredrose · 02/06/2021 22:26

Venice. Something a bit sinister about it.

Springchickpea · 02/06/2021 22:26

@Hellocatshome a funicular railway?

thenightsky · 02/06/2021 22:27

Grange over Sands in Cumbria.

EwwSprouts · 02/06/2021 22:27

Capuchin crypt in Rome
Deeply weird for very obvious reasons.

Hellocatshome · 02/06/2021 22:28

@Springchickpea thats it!

Wbeezer · 02/06/2021 22:29

Interesting mention of The Forest of Dean, only place I've visited and gone home early found it weirdly claustrophobic. Caveat, I'm Scottish and often feel at a loss at what to do in the English countryside, i always feel that I shouldn't be there and a farmer is going to shout at me for being in the wrong place! It all feels a bit private IYKWIM

RevolvingPivot · 02/06/2021 22:30

That's what I meant by Victorian lift 🤣🤣

It is fascinating though how they built that so long ago.

I adore saltburn, feel so relaxed there had an amazing holiday there last year.
Grange over sands I felt that though, really spooky atmosphere and sea not sea.

TheHateIsNotGood · 02/06/2021 22:31

Hello - Great Torrington is good for that - various people wandering around in Civil War (roundhead/royalist) attire calling people 'Mistress', etc BEFORE the Lottery funded a Tourist/Historical attraction.

Each to their own I s'pose.

jaundicedoutlook · 02/06/2021 22:32

Once stayed in a holiday cottage that had been part of the stable block of some old abbey in Shropshire. I’m not remotely a believer in any sort of paranormal guff, but I woke up in the middle of the night with the most awful creepy feeling - almost to the point of dread. The whole place gave off the eeriest vibe ever - was so glad to leave.

OrangeBananaFish · 02/06/2021 22:32

It was probably the atmosphere, but the London Dungeons. Maybe I'm just super squeamish as it was the Dungeons, but I felt really really odd. Lightheaded. Was OK with York Dungeons.

I've been to Saltburn once and went on that tram. Didn't notice any strange feelings though. Apart from Boredom TBH. I've not been back. We tend to go to Redcar or Whitby.

BlueButtercups · 02/06/2021 22:32

Evit Perions grave in Buenos Aires Argentina was eeerie too.. I worked there for a few years and would wander the Recoleta cemetery.. graves are above ground 😳

PivotPivotPivottt · 02/06/2021 22:33

Oh I've been on that cliff tram thing but I thought it was in ScarboroughConfused. Is there one in Scarborough as well?

Goldieloxx · 02/06/2021 22:34

@whiteroseredrose have you seen Don't Look Now? If not then you probably shouldn't!

Grenlei · 02/06/2021 22:34

I went to Glencoe once and that had a very sad, bleak feeling about it.

Also went to a gypsy church in the Camargue which was a bit odd, lots of discarded crutches from where people had prayed to the Madonna etc; the friend I was with at the time and I came outside and both said well that was creepy!

Amiable · 02/06/2021 22:34

Ullapool.

We were only there for half a day, couldn't get out fast enough!

Oh dear we are off on our hols to Somerset shortly!
Rosieposy89 · 02/06/2021 22:35

Agree with Glastonbury. Once stayed at a campsite up by Blackpool and had weird vibes as soon as I got there. It just felt dead and heavy. Weirdly I had a paranormal experience 2 nights there

SmidgenofaPigeon · 02/06/2021 22:35

Having never suffered a day of what others describe as depression in my life, I was awful in Berlin. I honestly felt like I had the weight of the world on my shoulders, I kept bursting into tears and was crying in a bloody restaurant which was embarrassing and very unlike me indeed. I couldn’t understand it. I felt like this black fog had attached itself to me, I felt so heavy and sad. Weird, because I think it’s an awesome city, but I could not get rid of that feeling.

Never felt like that before or since.

shivawn · 02/06/2021 22:36

Sounds like a very extreme reaction OP. Can't say I have ever reacted to anything like that.

A couple people mentioned Townsville, I actually really liked it, worked in a bar there for awhile.

kebabmuncher · 02/06/2021 22:36

@Springchickpea, is the Royal Victoria Country Park the one on the shore at Netley? If so, I agree. The atmosphere is heavy with the absence of the military hospital that got knocked down in the 60s.

Some pretty horrific 'treatments' were carried out on psychiatric patients, starting with soldiers suffering from shell shock. It's as if the energy of that and all the other suffering lingers.

Yes there's one there too.
