Places you have visited with a strange vibe

Hi. I'm off to Saltburn (near Whitby) tomorrow and I feel sick. I visited last March. The weekend before the lockdown.

The place was so eerie. I was actually freaked out on the pier and had to run off it. I actually managed to sleep at night but I honestly didn't think I would.

The cottage was surrounded by cliffs and there was a Victorian lift and a small morgue by the beach. I'm not sure whether these have anything to do with it.

Has anyone else had this feeling from a place they have visited?

@dyslek

Lansaroti, got to be the most depressing place in the world.

If your considering it because its cheap, dont, just dont. Believe me you'll regret it.

We ended up in Lanzarote after the place we were supposed to be going had a terrorist attack. I wasn't expecting to like it but we loved it.
BarbaraofSeville · 04/06/2021 08:04

Lanzarote, along with Mallorca, often comes up on threads where people thought they'd hate a place but then loved it.

In both places you just have to avoid the minority of areas aimed at people who want to get pissed and eat English food in the sun on the cheap and you then can enjoy the architecture, art, landscapes, warm sea, snorkelling, tapas, volcano park, watersports, cycling, hiking etc etc.

Hotel Polynesia in Benalemdena,Spain.

Weird as fuck like a shopping centre, very echoey and creepy.Urgh.

We stayed at the older hotel below and it's got a similar layout but we loved it! Interesting to see inside the Polynesia as it was being built on two of our visits!

Just for the record.. homeopathy is not to do with 'feelings' and isn't 'woo'.
It's the ultimate woo, or rather pseudoscience, which makes it all the more dangerous
HillsBesideTheSea · 04/06/2021 08:55

Actually can i clarify it for you.

The fact that joe bloggs thinks they can use aromatherapy without training and understanding is what it makes it so dangerous. Along with herbology. People rush into it thinking it is safe because it is natural so they give no head to contraindications or safety precautions and have no concept of how dangerous it can be if applied wrong or incorrectly. How many products that have the smells are actually problematic to pets? How many people know that tea tree is actually a neurotransmitter inhibitor to ants and that if inhaled can be an irratant to the lungs. Or that if you have a heart condition you shouldn't consume tumeric at medicinal levels because it will interact with conventional medical meds and potentially be very dangerous.

Anyway. end aside

Mersea Island. Felt a very weird, off vibe and couldn't wait to get away.

BlooperReel · 04/06/2021 09:20

The tower of london, there's a spot marked where Anne Boleyn was beheaded and it gave me a funny vibe

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/06/2021 11:14

Ah, thanks - HillsBesideTheSea

It just sounds so bizarre! Somebody also mentioned Bridgnorth upthread and apparently, Hitler wanted to make it his new capital once he invaded and had taken over Britain!

Personally, I love it there as an attractive small town, but I wouldn't have thought it particularly stands out as 'capital' material - especially as the lower part gets flooded so often.

@gingganggooleywotsit

Romsey marshes, such a sad desolate place.
Do you mean Romney Marshes? If so, I agree.
beachypeachy · 04/06/2021 17:35

Townsville in Australia, weird place!

Crystalgirl90 · 04/06/2021 17:40

Take some sage with you is my advice! 😉

lifebeginsat16 · 04/06/2021 17:42

Glencoe. As we drove into it I remember thinking 'how beautiful' then was immediately seized by a feeling of utter dread. I didn't know it was Glencoe until my husband said it was.

Easterbhunny · 04/06/2021 17:42

Nashville. It had such an oppressive feeling, I couldn’t wait to leave

hamptonmummy · 04/06/2021 17:43

1st time I drove across the m62 in Yorkshire and got the most awful feeling it was a lovely summers day but as I drove past this area it felt like it turned to winter, I felt a huge overwhelming sadness and actually had tears rolling down my face and felt sick and cold that I simply couldn't explain as I had absolutely no idea what I was driving past. I found out later that day it was Saddleworth Moor.

TrixieMixie · 04/06/2021 17:44

I grew up near Saltburn, it's lovely!

jenkel · 04/06/2021 17:45

Culloden moor, very damp and Misty which didn’t help but did feel a bit freaked out

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 04/06/2021 17:46

Haughmond Abbey in Shropshire. I stood there in broad daylight and I swear it was like that scene in Box of Delights when Kay transports back to the people defending their livestock from the wolves. Very weird.

Some of the rooms at Auschvitz …Overwhelming feeling of dread I had to run out ..(not that the whole place isn’t pretty grim ) but I found out later those particular rooms where were the SS guards plotted thier evil

pomers · 04/06/2021 17:49

I have 2. Spinalonga off the coast of Crete. The island was one of the last leper colonies in Europe. If you contracted leprosy, you were shipped off to this tiny island. The sufferers made a life there. The ruins of the town now exist, and the key buildings have notice boards in English so you don't need to take a guided tour. Creepy, but recommended
The second knocks Spinalonga into the shade. A small village just outside Limoges called Oradour sur Glane. On June 10th 1944, just a few days after D Day, the German commander took revenge on the community for the capture of an officer by the resistance. All the occupants were rounded up, women and children put in the church whilst the men were lined up and shot. The church was then set on fire, killing almost the whole population of the village. Charles de Gaulle declared that the village would not be rebuilt as a memorial to the dead. There is now a modern visitor centre, but the village is still a burnt out ruin. The cemetary has family graves with photos of the whole families who were murdered. It is the creepiest place I have ever visited but would recommend a visit if you are ever in that area. It is difficult to understand how anyone could carry out such a crime.
My daughter has been to Toul Sleng in Phnom Penh where over 20,000 people were killed by the Khymer Rouge. That was creepy too.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 04/06/2021 17:52

Funny when you have all of Australia to pick from Townsville has come up so often. Must be something it.🤔
