Places you have visited with a strange vibe

Hi. I'm off to Saltburn (near Whitby) tomorrow and I feel sick. I visited last March. The weekend before the lockdown.

The place was so eerie. I was actually freaked out on the pier and had to run off it. I actually managed to sleep at night but I honestly didn't think I would.

The cottage was surrounded by cliffs and there was a Victorian lift and a small morgue by the beach. I'm not sure whether these have anything to do with it.

Has anyone else had this feeling from a place they have visited?

@hamptonmummy

1st time I drove across the m62 in Yorkshire and got the most awful feeling it was a lovely summers day but as I drove past this area it felt like it turned to winter, I felt a huge overwhelming sadness and actually had tears rolling down my face and felt sick and cold that I simply couldn't explain as I had absolutely no idea what I was driving past. I found out later that day it was Saddleworth Moor.
I drive across that area regularly and yes, it is quite grim up there and that's without the association with IB and MH Sad.

Sizergh Castle in Cumbria.
We went many years ago & there was one small room which both of us had a really strange atmosphere, but there’s also a room like a Great Hall. It didn’t have much in there but I didn’t want to leave it, I had never had such a euphoric feeling ever - it felt like I was at the very best party in the world ever! I kept expecting my husband to ask me to move to the next room because there really was very little to see or do compared to its size & other rooms there, but he didn’t.
The feeling did eventually ebb so we carried on elsewhere & it was only when we got outside that he asked me if I’d felt the atmosphere in there as he’d felt exactly the same as me!
We decided the next time we visited the Lakes we’d head straight back to Sizergh to get that feeling again, but there was absolutely NOTHING. It was totally flat, and we’ve been back again & still not got the same fantastic well-being in there.
Has anyone else been to Spooky Sizergh Castle & noticed this?

Stayed in the lodges at the Grand Canyon. Couldn't sleep all night... Absolutely terrified. We were convinced we could see animals faces moving in the room. Luckily only one night on a fly drive. Will never go back.

Lindisfarne. I was accidentally locked in a car and my family didn't realize it. a one armed priest kept walking by and staring at me. I was nearly hysterical. the whole place gives me the creeps- will never return!

642 people killed at Oradour. Here is a link to the wiki page en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oradour-sur-Glane_massacre

Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. I think it was the collective minds but it did have a great impact.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 04/06/2021 18:07

Glastonbury is seriously creepy I live quite close and avoid the place would rather shop in Yeovil and if you're from Somerset you will understand that but lol.
There is an undercurrent of sadness and a dark feeling about it, just a very unhappy place with some quite desperate people living there.

pinkprosseco · 04/06/2021 18:12

Lourdes. It was years ago but I will never forget it. Lots of nuns and nurses pushing huge blue plastic wheelchairs, weird damp smell and eerie silence, shops selling the Virgin Mary flashing ash tray or fridge magnet....it fascinated me and made me shudder at the same time.

Mishka3085 · 04/06/2021 18:13

Yes, Paisley Abbey.
I’ve been a few times and always feel like someone is watching me. A feeling of dread comes over me, and I had a panic attack coming down the spiral stairs from the top. Even driving past it gives me the creeps.
I love historical buildings Paisley abbey and St Andrews (ruined) cathedral are the only ones that have given me bad vibes. Still beautiful though.

ChristmasFluff · 04/06/2021 18:15

I love being in Glastonbury, feel very homely to me.

Avebury on the other hand freaks me the hell out.

Also Bethel in North Wales.

@recklessgran

Ravenglass. Don't get me wrong - it's surrounded by beauty but gosh I was shocked by the creepy bleak nuclear feel. The railway journey from there however is another matter. Stunning.

Chanctonbury Ring in West Sussex. Got the feeling the whole time that I was being followed very closely by something not very nice. My two dogs wouldn't come anywhere near the Ring itself and I found them back by the car later, shaking with fright. Makes my hair stand on end just thinking about it!

Chillychangchoo · 04/06/2021 18:16

Bedworth

mycarsnores · 04/06/2021 18:17

Westward Ho! Devon. We drove through it whilst on holiday in North Devon and couldn’t wait to leave. There is/was a ruined house on the headland that is rumoured to be haunted but we didn’t know that at the time.

ChristmasFluff · 04/06/2021 18:20

And I'm laughing about Portmeirion, because I am English and have always been treated really well by the people in the surrounding area when staying there.

But Portmeirion seems to attract a clientele that is entitled and overly-demanding to the point of obnoxiousness. I suspect that no-one who isn't being paid to tolerate that will put up with it.

cappuccinoandcats · 04/06/2021 18:20

@RevolvingPivot the lift is a funicular. They have them at Scarborough too. The morgue might have been for deaths at sea ? Looks like an intriguing place. Would love to visit

Fluffymule · 04/06/2021 18:21

Ann Arbor in Michigan.

Perfectly pleasant on the surface but there was this underlying weird feeling I had, like I was in the Truman Show and the place and people were not really 'real'.

smilesy · 04/06/2021 18:21

@Lincslady53 I found Oradour incredibly sad and moving rather than creepy. The inhumanity was shocking and it really feels like you can connect with the poor people who perished there.

bigmumsymcgraw · 04/06/2021 18:21

Love Northumberland, but Beadnell Why would you go - weird little place with nothing in it

Geminijust · 04/06/2021 18:22

I went to Saltburn last year and can't say it made me feel that way. In fact, we visited twice during the holiday. Saw a programme recently though about a man, in his 20s I think, who went missing there some years ago and I did view it differently after that.

My nan was in Worley psychiatric hospital in Essex briefly many years ago and that place gave me a very bad feeling

teaandcake22 · 04/06/2021 18:23

Townsville completely agree just off and couldn't put my finger on it.

Then a couple of hotels / bed and breakfast type places we stayed in around San Antonio. Really creepy and not pleasant.

scampi1234 · 04/06/2021 18:26

Two for me:
Winchelsea near Rye - deserted and has a Hot Fuzz/birds don’t sing there vibe.
Avebury Stone circle - visited on a school trip on a bright, sunny day and had chills and an overwhelming need to leave it a.s.a.p. Talking about it years later it turned out that my younger sister’s friend had totally freaked out there too.

caspersmagicaljourney · 04/06/2021 18:31

Avebury in Wiltshire.
The stone circles there are eerie but it's very peaceful around there.

user1523010848 · 04/06/2021 18:32

St Albans.
