I bought a white coat in the sales to look like Olivia Pope, but I actually resemble a middle aged taekwando instructor

Why should I be silenced? The 'joke' is at the expense of older people. It's harmful.
Oh, jog on.

People are enjoying themselves here and laughing.

Surely you have other things to do on a Saturday night? Washing your hair shirts for a forthcoming week of self-flagellation, maybe?

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2021 00:44

You're being dreadfully ageist.
I'm old enough now I'd probably be flattered if someone thought I looked young and fit enough to be as the OP described.Grin
Not that I'd be caught wearing a white coat - chemistry degrees teach you many things and one is that white coats don't stay white.

LadyJaye · 17/01/2021 00:45

Incidentally, I'm 41, which is pretty much as middle-aged as middle-aged can be, and I think this thread is funny, so you don't have to campaign on my behalf, thanks anyway.

@NovemberR

Brilliant title! Some brilliant comments.

I do think magazines/internet sites should be banned from showing pictures of celebs in lovely clothes unless they also display a photo of a 53 year old, size 18, 5ft 2in, woman with no make up and jowls like a basset hound wearing the same garment.

It needs the subtitle this is what it will look like on you, Janet next to it.

I love you @NovemberR/janet

@sofiaaaaaa

Wait what, is that a scandal reference?? Didn’t think anyone on this forum knew about Olivia Pope !

older people Shock I (41/ middle aged) am DEEPLY offended by your insinuation that Middle Aged = older person Shock
Handsnotwands · 17/01/2021 00:56

Hang on. Who is Olivia Pope?

Handsnotwands · 17/01/2021 00:57

I’ve googled. I had thought she was probably off love island. Must be because i’m an older person

MrsAvocet · 17/01/2021 01:04

I'm glad to read that I am not the only one who has suffered from trench coat mockery. I bought one when 'Allo 'Allo was popular on television. Big mistake. Unfortunately all the people promising that " I will say zis only once" didn't.

Fuckoffyoueviltrolls · 17/01/2021 01:06

When my daughter was young, I had had convinced she was the baby in the sun. In my defence, it was the one thing she watched- that stopped her crying. I got myself a red coat I thought was quite nice, I'm referred to as fucking po now. That will reach me. I hate you telletubbies Angry

Do you think none of the women commenting are middle acted? Confused

My sister had a beautiful white coat a few years ago. It was pinched the first time she wore it out to a bar Sad

Seems ageist to me. Don't find it as thigh slappingly hilarious as others.

You are missing the point of the thread.

It’s about buying clothes you think will look great / cool, and discovering they look the opposite. My lab coat moment was when I was about 17, the lady whose kid thought her coat made her look like a telly tubby is probably under 30.

Now perhaps it’s been broken down for you you can jog on.

PerpendicularVincent · 17/01/2021 02:04

I once excitedly took DH shopping to check out a coat I'd seen and really wanted.

He took one look and said I looked like a magician standing in a ditch.

JaneJeffer · 17/01/2021 02:08

Last summer I bought a white short sleeved cardigan with a wide lace trim on the bottom as I thought it would look nice and summery. It looks like I'm wearing a net curtain.

Amortentia · 17/01/2021 02:19

A few years back I bought a white zip up hoody. Perfect for summer and it had two large pockets on each side that I could fit my phone and keys in. Except, every time I wore it my family would ask me if I was off fishing or had become a survivalist. Had to get rid of it as I couldn’t take being called Ray Mears anymore. 😂

JaneJeffer · 17/01/2021 02:22

I once bought a beret thinking I'd look chic and rive gauche, but I looked like the world's oldest Brownie.
I looked like Sir Thomas More in mine.

Loving this thread! Fishmongers hat and looking like Po have really made me giggle!

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 17/01/2021 02:37

This thread has cheered this middle aged woman right up! Ray Mears! World’s oldest Brownie! Fishmonger! Brilliant stuff!

@Shannith..Grin

It could be the start of a whole new career for me, to be fair! I was fairly accurately describing myself as Janet (although I knocked a couple of vanity years off). I'm willing to pose wearing the latest fashion next to gorgeous young things to accurately illustrate This! This is what it actually looks like on an ordinary human being....don't be sucked in by your fantasies!
