Things that are actually pretty weird when you think about them?

I've just been thinking about this as I've been lay in the bath.

I'm currently pregnant and baby goes mad when I'm in the bath and I was watching him kicking and squirming inside me and just thought... This is actually pretty odd when you think about it. I have a living thing that's moving around inside me!

A friend had to have a blood transfusion not so long ago and she can't think about that for long without feeling squeamish that someone else's blood was inside her!

What other things do you find strange when you really think about them?

Time

meaning we all are on a conveyor belt

Crystalknobs · 28/10/2020 21:14

Regarding aliens , with space being so massive, how can we be sure that there isn’t another planet trillions and trillions of miles away that isn’t exactly the same as earth?

TeamLucille · 28/10/2020 21:14

The wind!

MayLeaveADentInYourSofa · 28/10/2020 21:14

Fashion.

Why don't we just kit ourselves out for comfort and practicality?

High heels, long nails, lipstick, hairstyles - what's that all about?

TeamLucille · 28/10/2020 21:15

or maybe aliens are so advanced, they are travelling to yet another level we can't even comprehend and don't bother with this one!

LEELULUMPKIN · 28/10/2020 21:15

The Human Brain.

It just blows my mind that something that is basically just a mass of fluid, cells, matter etc, yet is capable of so so much.

Also time. When people talk about how long the dinosaurs have been extinct etc yet us as homo sapiens have been around is not even a grain of sand in the context of time.

Itsonlymakebelieve · 28/10/2020 21:15

I find the thought of dying very weird, one minute you’re a ( hopefully ) thinking, feeling functional, mum/ dad/ grandma/grandad whatever then you’re nothing. All the special, wonderful, gifted human beings that have existed through human history are all gone. Sometimes I wish I had a faith to make sense of it all.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 28/10/2020 21:15

Going to the beach....

Flocking to the edges of a country, taking off most of your clothes and then lying down.... very weird behaviour!

MayLeaveADentInYourSofa · 28/10/2020 21:16

@TeamLucille I was also going to say The Wind.

When it is windy I imagine a sci-fi movie where they have landed on another planet and the weather there is unpredictable and hostile.

onemorerose · 28/10/2020 21:16

I always think language is weird, where did they come from, who decided what meant what and passed it on? How did they even communicate this. And groups of animals all deciding to go the same way at once? Who’s the boss there?

missmouse101 · 28/10/2020 21:17

How does something as massive and heavy as an aeroplane stay up in the air?

Also, how on earth did sponge cake get invented?! Whoever thought 'if I mix flour, butter, milk and eggs and bake it, it will turn into a delicious soft sponge...' You'd never guess those ingredients would do what they do! What other combinations haven't been invented yet?

LuluJakey1 · 28/10/2020 21:17

@dudsville

I think dancing is weird. Everyone just jiggling themselves this way and that in front of each other.
Totally weird. Sort of some primitive response. I remember being astonished when DS1 as a baby just standing would jiggle and stamp his feet to music. I didn't know babies did that. DH has 'discos' with DS1-5, Dd - 3 and DS2 (16 months) and it is so strange to see how they dance.
Thecobwebsarewinning · 28/10/2020 21:18

That there are so many Shapes and sizes and varieties of vegetables that all taste and look absolutely different but they all grow from a tiny seed out of the same soil and water.

  1. How intense airport security is... all the way until baggage reclaim, when you can basically pick up any bag you want and go home with it.
  1. The tree that your coffin will be made out of is quite possibly out there growing somewhere right now.
  1. Why nobody will accidentally set their alarm for 6:59 and 'just leave it' that way
  1. Dancing. Not professional dancers, that's a bit different. But casual, social dancing.
Gingernaut · 28/10/2020 21:18

Nerdy, but the concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere.

It's about 21%. Just high enough for combustion.

Not so high that the air could cause explosions and not so low that a spark can't become a flame.

We can survive on lower and higher oxygen levels, but fire can't.

Without that 'just so' amount of oxygen in the air, early man wouldn't have had fire, gathered round for warmth and companionship and cooked food.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 28/10/2020 21:18

It’s weird that one day I decided I wanted a pet so I went somewhere, looked at a cat and said yep I’ll take that one and now she just lives in my house with me. I wonder how weird it must have been for her too. She was born in one house, then I went to look at her and basically to her view stole her from her territory and took her to my territory to share it with me?

autumnleaves1220 · 28/10/2020 21:18

Oh also!! I said to my husband the other day how weird it must be for a Baby before they learn how to talk. Like living in a foreign world in which you don't understand anything.

Crystalknobs · 28/10/2020 21:19

Wallpaper is weird, why do we bother to glue bits of paper onto our walls . I know it looks nice and have it in my house but still think it’s an odd thing to do.

Veescience · 28/10/2020 21:19

That if your brain were simple enough for you to understand you would be too simple to understand it. Mind blowing.

lidoshuffle · 28/10/2020 21:19

The Big Bang. Nothing, not even time, existed before, then immediately everything came into being.

dayswithaY · 28/10/2020 21:19

Meals. Who decided that you have three a day. Why do breakfast, lunch and dinner always vaguely stick to the same theme ie, cereal, sandwich, meat and two veg. Why is it not ok to have a chicken salad when you get up in the morning? I know anyone can eat whatever they like but really most people don't do they? Why don't people have apple crumble for lunch and cornflakes for dinner. Who made these rules? I want to know whose idea it all was!

MrsMaryBOOface · 28/10/2020 21:20

@whitewineandmagnums

Sleeping. It's funny when I think of all our neighbours in our close lying in their respective beds at the same time.
THIS.

Used to live in a terraced house on an estate, so all the other houses were pretty much the same layout. I used to visualise us all like Sims Grin

Isteamagoodham · 28/10/2020 21:21

Three things I find weird...

-Having babies. The fact that 'you can make a whole new human being just from things you have around the house'. I read that as a quote somewhere and I'm paraphrasing it.

-The concept of money. That the only thing that really keeps money going is the belief in money. 'I have these metal discs and paper that I say have this value'. When you look at your account balance, you're just seeing a number on a screen.

-The writing system. It bears no relation to actual spoken language really. We just decided that this squiggle represented that sound (I'm massively oversimplifying of course, but you get the idea).

Scout2016 · 28/10/2020 21:23

I know in many ways bees are more impressive but I can't get over wasps nests. Those tiny mouths chew up bits of wood, make a sort of paper and then fashion it into a beautiful delicate structure full of lots of little rooms. Just WOW.

How do cds work, really?
And when you get those blank plastic discs in car parks, how on earth do they store all that information? Time in / paid... likewise chip and pin and contactless. Cheques made sense to me.

Cakeislife44 · 28/10/2020 21:24

Acting. Why am I entertained by someone pretending to be someone else. I will literally sit and stare avidly at what I know to be a completely fake situation between people who are just pretending to be the people I'm watching. Such a weird thing.
