Things that are actually pretty weird when you think about them?

I've just been thinking about this as I've been lay in the bath.

I'm currently pregnant and baby goes mad when I'm in the bath and I was watching him kicking and squirming inside me and just thought... This is actually pretty odd when you think about it. I have a living thing that's moving around inside me!

A friend had to have a blood transfusion not so long ago and she can't think about that for long without feeling squeamish that someone else's blood was inside her!

What other things do you find strange when you really think about them?

That we think of our bodies as solid objects but they're not. We are just tubes with holes at each end. We put stuff it (food) and it drops out the bottom. Weird.

On that.. There's one man in my office, and 6 women. For 2 weeks before my period he's kind, caring, asking me how I am... The day my period ends and for about a week afterwards he doesn't ask me about myself. Worked with him for a few years and this is how he always is... Its weird

How on earth does he know you're on your period?!

He doesn't know know. He's responding to different pheromones.

Was listening to something on the radio about the first recording of a human voice.
And when a rare recording by a famous singer (Caruso possibly??) was unearthed, it turned out to be quite disappointing.

How did people hundreds of years ago know when someone was a good singer or musician?
I mean, they probably didn't have much to compare it to.
Nowadays, we have 1000s of examples but back then, if someone rocked up to your village and who was a 'celebrated' performer, you might have to take their word for it as you had no other point of reference. Same for dancers or acrobats...

The existence of the Internet still blows my mind, even though it's been around for all of my life. Anyone, anywhere in the world, can read this post within seconds of me pressing "POST MESSAGE" (assuming they have an Internet connection and can read English, obviously!). Of course, it's unlikely to be read by anyone outside the UK, but it's still a weird thought.

@ZoeCM I hear you! I'll never forget talking about "the internet" with my engineer father for about an hour in the mid-90s.

After he explained at length what it was all about I said it would probably never catch on!!

Also, sexual attraction between humans.

Not caught up on thread but for those interested in alternative maps etc I'm just watching west wing and for any unfamiliar there's an episode - season 2 episode 16 around 25 mins in where exactly this is discussed

2 main characters basically go in expecting a boring pr exercise, they simply need to get over with, and their jaws dropping upon being told that not only are major areas not correctly portrayed on standardly used Mercator maps in terms of size but also in terms of actual location

The characters are basically 'wtf?! So we haven't been living where we THOUGHT we were living the maps are all wrong?' And the quirky lobby group person goes "er...yep! Basically'

Lobby group person is one of my favourite actors, he's not famous as such but he's one of those he's in loads of things and most will know his face AND his distinctive voice/speech pattern - John Billingsley

Just a really funny scene

See, I saw this episode recently and thought - hang on, have none of you seen a globe?! I mean, surely globes are accurate and we all grew up seeing them. A flat map of the whole globe is never going to look real.

That we are clever apes keeping other animals as pets.
That we impregnate cows to steal their babies' milk.
And on a less grim note, writing. Drawing symbols to explain our thoughts to other people. Pretty amazing really.

Oh and how funny that world maps are different depending on what country you get them from. That particular country is the one in the centre. Seems obvious but looks weird.
