I’ve just learned that Casablanca is not in South America at all and is, in fact in Morocco! Who knew 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️
Anyone else got any tidbits they learned far too late in life?

@LuckyLuckyMe - you could nominate this for Classics - I notice there's already this there:

The same things keep coming up. Has anyone mentioned yet that...

pineapples grow on trees,

Gibraltar is NOT an island,

the little arrow on your dashboard next to the petrol symbol tells you which side the tank is (only for others to point out, not true for all cars).

Do I sound jaded? Grin

TheDodgyEnd · 12/10/2017 11:03

@DadDadDad pineapples grow on the ground...

And although there are similar threads, there are none involving the mass murder of tortoises to make terracotta pots Grin

Whoops! Blush Yes, I meant to say that they DON'T grow on trees, as has been repeatedly clarified (with pictures) on previous threads of this type.

Lweji · 12/10/2017 11:11

Has anyone mentioned yet that...

pineapples grow on trees

You mean they don't grow on trees?

Lweji · 12/10/2017 11:11

Ups, cross post. I think I forgot to refresh the page.

cozietoesie · 12/10/2017 13:45

Fingers crossed for you, Across.

LA Times - fires in California

steppemum · 12/10/2017 13:46

Dad - you've been around too long!

(you forgot to mention Russian being very close to America too!)

These threads do normally tend to the same things, but the terracotta tortoises have been a freshling new depths of ridiculousness.

cozietoesie · 12/10/2017 14:17

Oops - wrong thread.

doodlejump1980 · 12/10/2017 18:06

Glad I'm not the only caper - fish person! I've met my people!
(I only found out when I asked my husband how they caught them and did they need to use a really small net...!)

Ladyvird135 · 12/10/2017 18:24

If you are on the run, you are on the LAM. Not on the lamb.

Found that out yesterday.

cozietoesie · 12/10/2017 18:42

Out of interest, how did you think ‘on the lamb’ arose? Smile

TheDodgyEnd · 12/10/2017 18:52

@doodlejump1980 the little net comment just me do an involuntary snorty noise Grin brilliant

OP posts:
TheDodgyEnd · 12/10/2017 18:53

@Ladyvird135 erm I actually did not know this Hmm what does LAM stand for?

OP posts:
HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 12/10/2017 18:54

I’ve never heard of being on the run referred to as LAM or lamb.

doodlejump1980 · 12/10/2017 19:01

@TheDodgyEnd I'm actually quite clever despite my caper comments! Really! Ha ha!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/10/2017 19:03

"...on the lam, 1897, from a U.S. slang verb meaning "to run off" (1886), of uncertain origin, perhaps somehow from the first element of lambaste, which was used in British student slang for "beat" since 1590s; if so, it would give the word the same etymological sense as the slang expression beat it."

From Dictionary.com.

PeapodBurgundy · 12/10/2017 19:24

I've mentioned this on another similar thread, but I was in my mid 20s when I discovered that birds flying south for the winter don't simply go to London Blush

loc · 12/10/2017 19:26

My OH was absolutely flabbergasted when I told him raisins were made from grapes. He had to ask several people to confirm I wasn't just winding him up. (These were the days before google!).

TheDodgyEnd · 12/10/2017 19:37

@PeapodBurgundy 😂 did you think they were just going for a city break?!

Thanks for clarification re going on the lam - everyday’s a school day n all that!

OP posts:
PeapodBurgundy · 12/10/2017 19:44

Grin If it's any defense at all, I didn't really think anything much about it. I went to London once as a small child, and remember buying a little white cup of bird seed from a van to feed the masses and masses of pigeons that were about (there's a picture of DM with a huge splatter of bird crap down her coat sleeve Grin . It happened to be winter time, but 3 year old brain put those two pieces of information together. It wasn't until watching a documentary on migration that I realised my fecking huge mistake!
I also thought for a brief period several years that blind people could drive if they had a dog in the seat next to them Blush

cozietoesie · 12/10/2017 19:49

Which brief period? 2-5, I can just about understand but - say - 30 to 33 is a leetle more........problematic. Grin

BiscuitsEqualbiggerknickers · 12/10/2017 19:56

in my mid twenties I found out that crabs walk sideways. I announced at a table of soon to be in laws that the poor crab I saw at the aquarium had a leg missing and couldn't walk forwards, they all just looked at me!!!!

Gammeldragz · 12/10/2017 19:57

For years I thought it was Gilbert AND Sullivan. Apparently they are one person called Gilbert O'Sullivan!
I thought Portsmouth and Plymouth were next to each other.
I thought Lancashire was as up north as you could get before Scotland. Until at 13 we drove from Lancashire to Scotland!

Spangles1963 · 12/10/2017 19:59

OMG I just googled 'Is Portsmouth an island?'. There was a little paragraph that said 'What are people from Portsmouth called (Skates) followed by an explanation of why they are called this. I am scandalised!

itusedtobeverydifferent · 12/10/2017 19:59

Gammeldragz I consider myself pop music knowledgeable...I thought it was two people too! Blush
