Help. Epic hotel choice failure

So here we are in a family hotel in Italy on holiday, near Lake Garda. We are supposed to be here for two weeks and it's costing 5800 euros full board for four of us including DS2 (16) and DS3 (8). We have had a terrible year and this was supposed to be a special holiday to recover.

We all hate it. I hate it so much I could cry.

The hotel itself is really small and the things we thought we would use - spa and so on - are only open 4-7.30 daily (it said nothing about this on the website). We've just had a meal and it's reminiscent of school dinners - I could have cooked it better myself. You can only have dinner from 7-8pm. Nothing like the lovingly garnished offerings on the website, basically stodge. Even the teenager gave up ploughing through it. Our wine eventually came after we had fiinished the meal. There are no soft drinks for kids apart from Fanta, Sprite or Coke. The kids bedroom smells of smoke (as does ours) and has restricted ceiling height so DS2 is going to be banging his head the whole time. The decor reminds me of my grandmother's house about 30 years ago. There is nowhere to get away from the din because it's so small and i currently have a kids' disco under my window (it's 930 pm here) and DS3 is tired from travelling all day but it's too noisy to go to sleep.

I have been down the the manager to explain the problems but he just shrugged and said 'other people like it'. He said we have to stay at least a week otherwise they will have an empty room.

So we are trapped in this glorified youth hostel listening to a kids disco booming away under the window eating stodge and will have to spend 2900 euros for the privilege. And there may be nowhere else to go,

Help, what do I do?

Does the hotelier have your card details so he'll take it off that anyway if you leave early?

BoffinMum · 01/08/2017 09:21

I am by the pool which is quite nice actually, as there's hardly anyone here and the temperature is perfect. Lest you all think I am giving in, they had another outdoors disco just now at the end of breakfast. These people party like it's 1999.

I had missed that picture of dinner! It's absolutely typical of the fare here. Slop and carbs, basically. With a bay leaf stuck plaintively in the top screaming for a better life.

And yes, they do have our credit card details as we had to pay a 200 Euro deposit. He said we can leave on Friday though. I think he should be a bit more concerned about clearly unhappy guests and try a bit harder, so as I drive off from here I will be slamming it on TripAdvisor.

Have emailed another hotel to see about availability

There are also quite a few bad reviews in German and Italian. Sad

Has your DH spoken to Kinderhotels HQ yet, OP?

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 01/08/2017 09:30

If I were you, I'd stay until Friday. At least that gives you time to find somewhere else.

You could say your CC card has been lost and the bank will cancel it, so the hotel wouldn't beable to charge you and you could leave today, BUT if you do that, you won't have much time to find other accommodation and also the hotel might try and sue! It's not worth the hassle.

EmuBea · 01/08/2017 09:31

Look for a hotel in Malcesine. so much to do or you could just relax by the lake.

LIZS · 01/08/2017 09:33

Kinderhotels is an umbrella organisation, member hotels subscribe so not sure they have much direct influence. Presumably most of the clientele are German/Dutch. What does the other English family think? The hotel we stayed in in Torbole (booked through a UK tour operator) had a similar children's programme and demographic but food was better , it was cheaper and reasonably close to the lake.

AtSea1979 · 01/08/2017 09:38

Probably easier using a hotel website rather than emailing individual ones. Go on lastminute.com or something like and see what they have near Garda. I second Malcesine. Though I expect that's expensive.

Pastyandacustardslice · 01/08/2017 09:40

Boffin, I nearly posted the exact same post last week. We also asked to leave, got the shoulder shrug. We've been getting by by spending all day outside of the hotel (ledro is gorgeous, despite shite choice of hotel - btw all the local hotels are full - I checked!)

Give us a knock, room 311 😬

BareBum · 01/08/2017 09:42

This review was on TA. I had to put it through google translate, so it's not great English:
had the pleasure of staying at this hotel with my girlfriend. I say we are not difficult people and in the past we have found ourselves well in small, simple facilities as well as cured and welcoming. Here the environment is cold and poorly managed, on the low floors there is a smell of school meals and we ate very badly, there was a fish menu, I did not go into details but everything was instructed on saving from the sorbetto starter Final, the fish smelled (inedible) and we did not touch almost anything, we folded on the salad otherwise we could fast. Looking around in the room other couples were in our very embarrassing situation and the waiter brought into the kitchen full plates without even asking for the reason. Breakfast is also terrible, sparkling coffee and stale brioches. The rooms are not bad at all, but they are noisy due to the constant tears of children. The small wellness center was passable but also cold and ill-treated (Turkish bath then smelled of sewer)

Impromtu mini Mumsnet meet up in Ledro.

At least you'll be able to have some Wine together and trade war stories.

turtlecreek · 01/08/2017 09:57

Wine to you both. You now have an army! Draw up plans for your next attack!

They could make a mumsnet film out of this.

The80sweregreat · 01/08/2017 10:00

hi, i read your post last night op and felt so sorry for you- i hope you can sort out something for next week and you can do some fun things today with the children -
went to garda years ago - it is lovely so its a shame that the hotel isnt up to much. i hate the smell of cigarette smoke too, hope they can move you or do something for you at least.

BoffinMum · 01/08/2017 10:00

Update, we are here by the pool. Patsy is battle hardened and we are sharing war stories right now. This is ace this is.
