Morning Mars - you have my full sympathy about funeral costs.
My MIL died last Summer. My DH is one of her seven children. They split the cost of the funeral between the seven. Bearing in mind we, as a couple, for the first time in 30 yrs are claiming benefits (DH had bad accident at work 5 yrs ago and is now registered disabled) The youngest child insisted on the best coffin to a cost of £2,500. We have been paying the eldest child money every week since and feel like the poor relations.
Now we are moving onto headstone - FGS - they now need £200 from us! Without being as bitchy as I could be - MIL left all seven kids (when youngest was just 3) and went off with a bloke because she wasnt happy at home!! She treated me, and all her in laws, like a dog poo she had stood in. I object (although silently) strongly to this 'pay everything for the mum who abandoned you' idea.
