Universal credit managed migration thread

1000 replies

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

@Summer1912 I hope not cos my circumstances won't change I just don't want to claim UC

AlwaysFrazzled88 · 17/07/2023 14:23

They are just checking for fraud. There was a lot with claims started during COVID. Personally I would make your UC claim and see how much you get rather than decide to not apply

So how does it work if you decide not to claim the uc. Will you have to pay back some tc?

You're given a deadline date to claim UC, and I assume if you don't make the claim then your TC just stops being paid (at least I very much hope so).

Rummikub · 17/07/2023 23:37

will they want to see proof of ID too or as it’s a managed migration then not needed?

And any idea how the transitional bit works? Do you have to apply or is it automatically applied?

whonickedmyusername · 20/07/2023 16:06

Just a little update/bit of advice for those migrating:

I applied (as requested from UC, twice) on 11/7 (last week) and this week didn't receive any CTC.
After calling the TC line, they said once your UC application is in, then your TC will stop until UC is up and running. My meeting's not until next week.

I had until 4th Aug and will have lost a few weeks of CTC (rubbish timing just as we start the summer holidays). Just thought i'd still get CTC until UC was up officially set up.

So word of warning - just be aware of this. Maybe leave it to as near to the deadline on your letter as possible or you may be out of pocket for a while.

A Uc advance will be available to you to tide you over the loss of the Tax credits.

Thanks, I know. But...

Depends on if and what I get (complicated circumstances).
And doesn't really help this week or next tbh 😕

Rummikub · 20/07/2023 16:17

@whonickedmyusername thanks for that advice. Good suggestion re timing.
the letter should make that clear.

Did you have to provide proof of ID?

For the online application I already had my Government Gateway ID on Gov.uk so they just accepted that. I think there was a section where they asked for ID though. I'm pretty certain they'll want some confirmation of it.

Rummikub · 20/07/2023 16:46

@whonickedmyusername thank you.

oh no - I was hoping it’d be a straight forward transfer. I claim
ctc in married name but my passport / drivers licence is still maiden name! And im
divorced now.

Hopefully they can work something out if you explain the situation? 🤞

Rummikub · 20/07/2023 16:52

I hope so!

I was wondering h if it’s easier to change my name on ctc while claim still active. I feel like UC is more computer says no!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/07/2023 09:22

Started the claim Ystd, only question I couldn't answer was around the service charge part of my rent so am waiting on a response from my landlord about that.

The other questions weren't as bad as I was expecting tbh but appreciate this is only the first bit!

Rummikub · 23/07/2023 12:17

That’s good to know. I hate filling in forms!

Bemyclementine · 23/07/2023 16:11

I'm going to phone thus week to see what my deadline is. Its blank on the letter.my TC are due on Thursday, so if the deadline is soon, I should probably start UC Friday.

Rummikub · 27/07/2023 18:12

Just rang to change my name on TC to my maiden name.
She was v helpful and changed it while on phone.
Figured it’s simpler doing it that way.

Bemyclementine · 27/07/2023 18:23

I called today too, and found out my deadline which is in October. Again, very friendly and helpful. Explained the transitional thing to me (I had no idea).

She also said that once I put my uc claim in, I'll get one last TC payment, but I'm not convinced about that.

So I'm going to do mine ASAP now I know I won't be worst off initially.

Bemyclementine · 27/07/2023 18:23

worse!

Rummikub · 27/07/2023 18:29

Was that tax credits that gave you the info?

i noticed the helpline hours are reduced to 6pm and not 8pm as it was. Was waiting on the phone for ages!

Explained the transitional thing to me (I had no idea).

@Bemyclementine

what did they say about this? Is it automatically done by them?

Bemyclementine · 27/07/2023 18:31

No it was the number on the UC migration letter under "how to get help". Answered REALLY quickly!

They automatically apply the transitional protection IF you apply before the deadline.

Rummikub · 27/07/2023 18:34

Oh that’s great to know! Thank you.

how funny they answered really quickly 😂😂 compared to TC 45 min wait!

Bemyclementine · 27/07/2023 18:36

Yes and SO helpful, I was trying to get off the phone abd she just kept rabbiting on 🤣

Bemyclementine · 27/07/2023 18:37

I wasn't on hold at all. Had to choose an option twice, that was it

IWannaShout · 27/07/2023 18:39

Does anyone know, if you don't apply for UC will tax credits just stop? I don't want to apply for UC and don't get much tax credits any way but just wondering what will happen if I don't claim uc before the deadline

Rummikub · 27/07/2023 18:50

@Bemyclementine

my one was friendly too.

But whilst on hold (For ages!) the automated voice kept saying you can check on line now hang up. Gave me several opportunities to hang up “you can hang up now” ... then long pause.

So as long as I apply by my deadline of 31st September then the transitional arrangements will be applied?
