Universal credit managed migration thread

1000 replies

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

I’m in a similar position but fortunate to have a bit of inheritance. Pls update and let us know how you get on.

@Rubyrach @Babyroobs
Thanks for your messages/advice.
I'm very fortunate to just about be able to cope without UC so i'm going to close down my claim. I just find it way too intrusive and I don't trust them quite frankly!

Rubyrach · 15/07/2023 19:46

I may well do the same. Only work part time due to disability and no way I’d manage to make up the income in working hours. If I don’t claim, I’d just go through savings quicker and still end up needing it. It’s hard to know what to do for the best.

Symposium · 15/07/2023 22:27

So they ask to see bank statements even when you declare that you have savings over £16k? Doesn't make sense to me. I would have thought they would only ask to see statements to prove you don't have savings.

I imagine they'll want to find any excuse to give me as little as possible or nothing. And not that i've done anything wrong, but the thought of them judging my spending is too much on top of everything else.

It's a real dilemma - I do understand. If i'm only going to get it for the transitional year then I don't think I can be bothered with the stress and will just have to cut back (even more).

Symposium · 15/07/2023 22:58

Well I can understand you wanting to close your claim. I wouldn't want that level of intrusion either.

Bemyclementine · 16/07/2023 18:07

I got the letter yesterday. I currently work part time abd get ctc and wtc. I really know very little about how all this works. Dreading it tbh.

Bemyclementine · 16/07/2023 19:40

I noticed the place where the deadline to claim is, is blank. As is rhe place where it should say the benefits I'm currently receiving.

Uc is fairly straightforward to claim unless self employed then it is more complex. Some of the rules are different though so things like wheras people could have savings on tax credits they can't have more than 16k on UC and wheras on tax credits lone parents could continue to work only 16hours right up until when their kids leave education, they certainly cannot on Uc without being pushed to look for more hours.

Joining thread as I need to do this, not sure it's worth it really as only get £20 a month in TCs now 😕

IhearyouClemFandango · 16/07/2023 20:40

We haven't had a letter to transfer over yet, should we have done?

allforyouul · 16/07/2023 21:18

I currently receive CTC and WTC and received the letter that I need to apply for UC before September but I'm not going to bother, woukd I have to let them know or will the CTC and WTF just end. I don't get that much any way and really can't be bothered with the hassle

Wouldn't worry yet - they'll definitely make sure you get the letter.

I think in alot of cases it's worth it - you might even get more? If your situation is pretty simple all within their eligibility then you should maybe go for it.

Symposium · 16/07/2023 22:06

I've just checked the latest schedule and tax credit only claimants should receive a letter by the end of 2023. If you receive tax credits and another legacy benefit, then you should receive a letter by the end of 2024.

Rummikub · 16/07/2023 22:30

I got my migration letter couple weeks ago.

So far I’ve gathered from this thread that claimants will have to see an adviser with 3 months of bank statements.

Dpes anyone know if they’ll want to see proof of ID too as it’s a managed migration?

And any idea how the transitional bit works? Do you have to apply or is it automatically applied?

Haha, true!

allforyouul · 17/07/2023 11:15

Do you have to apply for the switch or will it happen automatically

You need to apply.

allforyouul · 17/07/2023 11:22

@Babyroobs thank you. So if I don't apply will be tax credit just stop and I will receive no universal credit. I don't want to claim universal credit, I only get a bit of Tax credit anyway and I feel it's not worth the bother.

Yes I would think so.

MansfieldLark · 17/07/2023 11:26

I'm looking at changing over this year, can anyone tell me if household savings includes children's savings. My ds is lucky enough to have 20k In premium bonds bought when he was small by a kind elderly relative.

allforyouul · 17/07/2023 11:26

Thanks @Babyroobs

Summer1912 · 17/07/2023 11:34

So how does it work if you decide not to claim the uc. Will you have to pay back some tc?
