Universal credit managed migration thread

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

@Crumbcatcher does your statement breakdown include an amount for transitional protection? My first statement didn't include it on the day it was available to me but was added in I'm the days between statement and payment. That brought mine back to slightly more than my old TC amount

No it doesn't mention it. It sounds promising that it will turn up though, thanks for the info!

Does anyone know what happens with Christmas /December payments?

im worried that it looks like as my December pay is brought forward that I’ll have two payments in one assessment period. When it really belongs in the next assessment period.

Rummikub · 17/11/2023 17:33

Is tjj hi is going to wipe out my UC claim for that month?

You can ask Uc to re-assign the early payment to the next Uc assessment period if it is just because you have been paid early because of christmas pay dates.

Rummikub · 17/11/2023 21:49

Ah brilliant @Babyroobs

is it quite straightforward? Just send a message in my journal?
Does my employer need to do anything?

Crumbcatcher · 17/11/2023 22:21

I didn't get the transitional element and they haven't responded to me asking about it in the journal. If you phone them does it take hours to get through?

purpleme12 · 17/11/2023 22:40

I've phoned them once and it didn't take too long to get through. Quicker than tax credit line!

Crumbcatcher · 17/11/2023 22:46

@purpleme12 thanks!

HelenaCh9 · 20/11/2023 20:24

I applied this morning (Monday) having received my migration letter on Saturday. Was impressed by how easy it is to apply.

Because I’ll get paid UC on 22nd Dec and TC will now cease, I requested an advance and it was approved within hours and will be paid to me on Wednesday. Again, very impressed. Kudos to whoever set up the IT system at DWP - they’ve done a very good job.

Anyone who is worried about the physical process of migrating …..please don’t be. It’s user-friendly. I was nervous this morning but it was unwarranted.

I have a slight concern that I will be overpaid in December because my monthly November salary will be much lower than normal (I’ve made a lump sum pension contribution because I’m nervous about retirement funds - that’s a topic for another thread though!) However, hopefully it will right itself in January.

purpleme12 · 20/11/2023 20:43

I have logged into my account and it says I'll get nothing this month.
But mine varies from month to month because of bonus.
So will it automatically assess it again next month? As I'm pretty sure I'll be paid less next month

Danikm151 · 20/11/2023 23:58

@HelenaCh9 UC works on a month to month basis so you don’t risk overpayments like on TC. There isn’t a letter of doom saying you’ve been overpaid 🙂

megletthesecond · 21/11/2023 07:18

I don't like the way UC hand out advances (ie; debt) willy nilly. Such a poor system.

I've still got until mid January so I'll apply in the first week.

Castlecould · 21/11/2023 16:40

Hi all
Im in the process of migrating to UC from TV with a decision due at the start of December. I’ve just received a letter from HMRC stating that I have been overpaid TC £700 from April-Nov. Unfortunately, this is likely to be correct as I’ve just received a pay increase backdated to April. So, I’m wondering how this will impact my UC award. Will I receive nothing until this debt has been paid, either from me laying a lump sum or taking from what I would have been due ( approx £125 per month according to online calculators although if TP is applied, may be more) or are they likely to award a small amount of UC monthly with deductions for the overpayment?

They're not handed out 'willy nilly' but are a response to the needs of people, some of whom are in dire financial straits, moving from weekly to monthly pay.

The advance can be repaid over a period of up to 24 months so even if the advance was a couple of thousand we're not talking large amounts every month.

It's better than it was. Largely down to a short period where we had a non dogmatic and humane Minster at DWP. Another one whose lack of commitment to Brexit saw them defenestrated.

Crumbcatcher · 21/11/2023 18:48

I've just had an update after querying my missing transitional element - they are going to pay the missing part now, and next month's figure has updated to include it. Phew!

@Castlecould have you received the back pay yet? I'm in a similar situation so my employer is going to split it over the next 5 months so it doesn't impact my UC too much.

RavenT · 22/11/2023 18:44

Do you definitely get called up for an interview after you have put an application in?

I applied online 2 1/2 weeks ago... and have had confirmation that the application went through and been given a date when I will receive notification of the award.

But no interview....

Rummikub · 22/11/2023 19:02

I havent had one. All sorted on line.

purpleme12 · 22/11/2023 19:04

I didn't get an interview either

RavenT · 22/11/2023 19:12

OK, thanks!

Teado · 22/11/2023 23:15

I applied on Sunday and have been told when my first payment will arrive. No interview invitation so far. No further questions so far. I’ll update if that changes.

BringItOnxxx · 25/11/2023 08:22

Thanks. Did they tell you the amount yet?

purpleme12 · 25/11/2023 08:34

They don't tell you the amount till a month after

Teado · 25/11/2023 18:38

Yes, the site says that I’ll be told the amount on Friday 22nd Dec, and that it will be paid to me on Tuesday 26th Dec.

Although with 26th being a bank hol I’m thinking I’ll get it on 27th. Or maybe 22nd. But it’ll be 26th going forward until everything stops in August (DC18 off to university in Sept and no more benefits for me).

I’m looking forward to monthly UC payments rather than weekly Tax credit ones. My salary, child maintenance from ex husband, ISA interest, and all my bills are paid in/out monthly at month-end. Only the Child Bene will not be monthly now.

BringItOnxxx · 25/11/2023 22:00

Thanks for that info
