Universal credit managed migration thread

ChristmasCatBells · 28/06/2023 14:50

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

Hi all
Im in the process of migrating to UC from TV with a decision due at the start of December. I’ve just received a letter from HMRC stating that I have been overpaid TC £700 from April-Nov. Unfortunately, this is likely to be correct as I’ve just received a pay increase backdated to April. So, I’m wondering how this will impact my UC award. Will I receive nothing until this debt has been paid, either from me laying a lump sum or taking from what I would have been due ( approx £125 per month according to online calculators although if TP is applied, may be more) or are they likely to award a small amount of UC monthly with deductions for the overpayment?

Are you sure that this is what the overpayment is from?
It's just I got a letter saying I've been overpaid too.
(Nowhere near that much mind).
But I rang them to see why. They said that it's because my tax credits was paid just before I applied for universal credit and some of tax credits is paid arrears and some isn't so because I'd just had the tax credit payment it meant they needed to claw some back.
I specifically asked so it's not because you've looked at my wage and think you've overpaid me because of that? And he said no, they don't look at that until the end of the tax year (like they always have done with tax credits).
So there's still the danger tax credits can look at the end of tax year next year and say we've overpaid you

Castlecould · 26/11/2023 06:56

Thanks @purpleme12 I’m pretty sure mine is due to wages but interesting that you were told this isn’t looked at till the end of the financial year so I’m going to give them a phone to check.

It get all too over whelming for me left it till the last day when I had to migrate by and I struggled with the online form phoned the helpline and explained my situation and they gave me an extension till the 14th January which was a relief and my tax credits are still being paid which is a bonus,

If you need help with the form it's worth trying Help to Claim 0800 144 8 444. Run for the DWP by Citizens Advice and aimed specifically at people making a new claim and up to ensuring first payment is correct.

Hi @Castlecould , I was just wondering if you spoke to UC regarding your tax credit overpayment and whether they will deduct in the next assessment period or end of the tax year? I received a letter from tax credits stating I had an overpayment, based on my earnings and a bonus I received, which is correct. I was expecting it to be deducted from my latest UC payment, but it is just the same as the month before, with no deduction. So now I am not sure if they will only look at it at the end of the tax year?

purpleme12 · 29/11/2023 10:59

When I rang about my overpayment from tax credits (my overpayment was because of a different reason though) he said it won't be taken out the first UC payment as it's not sent over to UC straightaway. It sounds like there'll be a few months delay before UC gets the details of overpayments from what he was saying

Imissthesummer · 29/11/2023 15:30

Anyone know why they ask on the application form if you been out of the UK in the last 2 years? Can the dwp check if youve been on holidays last year?

purpleme12 · 29/11/2023 17:41

I think it's just if you've been out of the UK for more than 4 weeks continuously?
But it would interesting to know the reason
Maybe they think you've squandered all your money away on the holiday or something!!

Castlecould · 29/11/2023 18:32

Nothing yet. I’m expecting my award details next week so will report back then.

Teado · 29/11/2023 20:46

My first UC payment is due middle next month. Will I find out on the day how much it is, or are we told slightly in advance?

It will be based on my monthly November salary which is paid tomorrow. Not being grabby but I’d like to know what sum to expect for budgeting reasons.

purpleme12 · 29/11/2023 20:55

I think they tell you about a week before?

SuperFi · 01/12/2023 18:22

Had anyone had to wait longer than 5 weeks for the migration? I made my application on 27/10 Tax credits stopped 4 weeks ago, getting a bit nervous now we are getting close to Christmas.

Rummikub · 01/12/2023 20:30

No it was 5 weeks. But at your stage I was panicking too. I got email asking me to agree to the conditions then on my uc account I got notification that my statement was due and when payment would be.

Teado · 01/12/2023 20:58

@SuperFi I’d call them if there’s no update on your account by the middle of next week. I think that you should be paid on Monday or Tuesday assuming you’ve done all the “to do” stuff.

SuperFi · 02/12/2023 14:35

Phew, just checked online, payment due on 05/12. It’s been a long 5 weeks…

It's not a catch out about spending. It's to do with residence criteria for benefits. PIP and AA forms are similar and those benefits are not means tested.

Going to Majorca for three weeks isn't going to disqualify you. Neither is a couple of months visiting friends and relations in Oz.

If, OTOH, you're spending long periods abroad then at some point there's a question as to whether the UK is your main home and whether you are 'habitually resident' here.

In Universal Credit the on line form will, to some extent, morph and adapt according to your answers. Your answer to this question may open a suite of additional questions so as to get 'further and better particulars' of your absence. Or it might drive whether you're called in for an interview and what you're asked.

MansfieldLark · 02/12/2023 15:19

I've just had a tax credits letter saying they have overpaid me just under 300 (thought it had all transitioned too well). How do I pay this back in installments?

purpleme12 · 02/12/2023 15:48

They send the details over to UC in the next couple of months. It's not done immediately.
I know that much.
I presume it's then taken off your UC in installments but I haven't got that far

MansfieldLark · 02/12/2023 16:28

Thank you 😊

If it's a relatively small amount then I think they can recover it via your tax code ie by reducing free pay by (say) £360 for the next tax year. Same effect as installments, you pay a wee bit more in tax every month.

MansfieldLark · 03/12/2023 15:14

Thank you thats very helpful.

DorisJoy · 04/12/2023 12:04

Hi all, this thread has been so helpful. Recently moved across from tc to uc. Single, disabled and no dependants. I wfh 16 hours pw across 4 days and this has been perfect for me. I had covid in mid October cev/high risk and it kicked my butt. Just finished second round of antibiotics yesterday and still not 100%. Due to being on a zero hrs contract my wages were down approx £200 in nov and will be the same this month too. I’ve now been summoned to do a work search review. Does anyone know if this is right? I’ve told them why wages are lower. Also on pip x

Peasnbeans · 05/12/2023 02:09

If my TC stop in Jan, and I don't claim UC (I have £10k savings up for a car, and a mortgage not rent) what will happen to my. Cost of living payment - will I have to pay it back?
And can I still use my free prescriptions letter, as it is dated until April 24?

DorisJoy · 05/12/2023 05:27

I was told the tax credits prescription cert still stands until the date it expires. I would still apply as you will get some transitional protection payment and will not lose a huge amount for savings.
