My son won £500 once and he currently holds the family record! Until tomorrow hopefully when agent millions comes over lol!!

So here's an interesting question for those of you that have kids with premium bonds...if they won the jackpot, what would you do?

Personally, I would take that money as family money so it may as well be that it won it. Obviously a nice portion would be put away for the children's future out of that million, but the rest would go on improving our situation and therefore, I suppose, life as a family and their childhood.

It's controversial though I guess!

It wouldn’t be your money to do anything with, it would be your child’s money. To take it would be stealing.

In the 2 years I’ve had them I’ve had a total of £500 in prizes, which means I can cover DS’s university rent this month. That was a nice feeling.

And that's what I mean by controversial 🤣🤣🤣 it always divides opinions. Legally not stealing as i am able to withdraw and buy as I see fit as guardian, but each to their own!!

TheGoodEnoughWife · 29/09/2022 17:42

I won £1,000 on the second or third month of having bonds. Was absolutely thrilled. Have held them for four ish years. Nothing near that since. Mostly £25 with the odd (1 or 2?) £50.

Had around 24k at first but now maybe 35k.

Pemba · 29/09/2022 17:45

Thing is what do you do if you have 2 or more DCs and one wins a big prize? Do you redistribute it so they're equal?

But technically that's stealing I suppose.

I've got two kids, when my son won £500 I withdrew £250 and put it in his sisters and will continue to do that with amounts that large or larger. I also make a not periodically of how much there is in each as ultimately I want to present my kids with equal amounts.

That question is one of the reasons I am thinking of moving the kids and putting them somewhere else.

Dd is 18. I know for her fact that her father would manipulate money out of her. We just found out he committed fraud using her name recently. She would feel sorry for him and there would be none left.

If ds won and exh got access to it he would slowly bleed ds dry.

if they do win, it will be a trip to a financial advisor. It’s definitely their money. It’s not family money imo. I couldn’t even draw dds money out if I wanted.

SunnySusan83 · 29/09/2022 17:54

@Hearthnhome
I totally get your point of view. I don't share it though but my kids are 5 & 9. If they won a million I wouldn't have it sat in one of their accounts for the next however long until they can access it as adults. It's unfair on the sibling that didn't win too.

I would never withdraw my kids savings, I've worked hard to be in a position to save regularly for them, but a large win like that is no longer viewed as a saving to me, more a prize that their savings allowed us to access.

Pemba · 29/09/2022 18:21

You would naturally want to share out the DCs prizes equally, I know I would. How could you have one child a Premium bond millionaire and the other just have a few hundreds/thousands? But if it did happen I would also worry about getting into trouble. And what if the kid who actually won grew up selfish and decides to sue you for the other half of their million?

I suppose you could explain to the kids and if they agree to share get them to sign (if they're old enough to write!). But maybe this would be viewed legally as coercion as they would be heavily influenced by their parent of course.

Such a minefield! Theoretical for me though as my only DD is an adult now. 😁

Myleakycauldron · 29/09/2022 21:18

I would withdraw the money and use as family money I.e. a house which would ultimately be their inheritance In any event.

My children (who are small) don't have many premium bonds between them and any prizes (so far none!) will be split between them so long as it's not one of the bigger ones £100k and upwards.

fromdownwest · 30/09/2022 10:54

@SunnySusan83 , good thing you didn’t open the door and threw yourself into his arms… 😂

SunnySusan83 · 30/09/2022 15:08

@Summerof22 haha. Well he is the man that brings the gin and wine so he deserves a cuddle regardless!!

Cudz · 30/09/2022 16:18

Still awaiting the knock at the door. I've convinced myself they must have come during the school run and I'm still in with a chance of the £million this month. Already worked out in my head how I'm spending it!

RockaLock · 30/09/2022 16:30

Don't they visit/call early evening, as they are more likely to catch people at home? Don't give up hope yet!!

Although actually, do give up hope, as I'm sure they are en route to my house right now Grin
