charliecat · 01/03/2007 20:48

Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

CC, I know the pans you're talking about - they're in the Betterware catalgue?

I also hate how the banks can take your mone out of your account one day, put it in their little holding account for 3 days, earning them interest, and then finally pay the bill.

I don't really go in charity shops, really because if I'm buying something, I like to see it straight away, I hate trawling through sale type racks. I get bored after a few minutes in a shop.

ska · 17/03/2007 19:21

charliecat, i signed up for yougov but haven't heard anything (this was xmas time) - do they email surveys out, i thought they did?

GreedyGecko · 17/03/2007 19:30

ska, I joined YouGov from CCs link. I've already done 4 surveys & noticed one in my inbox today. Maybe you should email them asking why you haven't been invited to any?

charliecat · 17/03/2007 19:31

Join up again Ska...they do email the surveys out. Thanks for using my link BTW

OP posts:
nikkie · 17/03/2007 19:55

I never got any either

Jelley · 17/03/2007 20:09

I got and completed an initial one, but nothing since then?????

Our local charity shop has stopped stocking childrens things (except clothes) and put its prices up It is cheaper to shop in Tescos now

Things are going a bit pear shaped this month here. DP is spending too much money and I have no way of stopping him
The car is going to fail its MOT on Monday, and if it needs alot doing, won't be worth the expense to fix. We will have to spend our tax savings on a new car.

charliecat · 17/03/2007 20:21

Cars...my brakes failed at a juntion on Thurs....thankfully I was doing 0 miles an hour...so that was £130 on the credit card, and the MOT was the next day, that was another 50...
My mum s gave me 70 towards it...
Before the car goes in fill up the water scooshies and oil and make sure all your lights are working... your car can be shit and pass, coz they look for the oddest things, seatbelts working etc.
Oh a new tyre at start of week...hmm 200 on motor this week ...Hmph

OP posts:
Jelley · 17/03/2007 20:29

It will definitely fail, because it needs new tyres, but we aren't going to get them if it needs lots of other stuff doing.

Mirage · 17/03/2007 20:35

charliecat,I've been looking for one of those saucepans for ages.

charliecat · 17/03/2007 21:00

Really? I was shocked to find it...used it tonight....very impressed...sorry Keep your eyes out in charity shops, tho why anyone would get rid of it is beyond me...fantastic invention

ska · 19/03/2007 18:52

hi cc, I have rejoined and you should get your 50p! Lets hope i get something out of it too!

MascaraOHara · 19/03/2007 20:01

Quick question, I'm sure onme of you will know... is there a website where you can check the value of your house in 1991? I want to check my council tax banding, tia.

Going to make a cup of tea and catch up with the thread now, see how well you're all doing

OP posts:
ska · 20/03/2007 13:57

well I've got cutains and tablecloths I found in the back of the airing cupboard that we haven't used since we moved here in 1998! So I won't miss those, will I? & I have to go through my wardrobe again I think, I hardly ever wear anything in it! The excess spending was on clothes for my dd and my husband and they kind of needed them but went a bit mad.

I found out that our house (ex council house) would have been worth MORE in 1991 than our current banding shows so no way will I try for a reassessment - really don't understand how that works. And yesterday I got asked to write a regular article for a 'trade' journal so that will be a bit extra, so long as I can manage to think of anything to write about

nikkie · 20/03/2007 19:40

Weird prices on my ebay now!
just sold some vouchers I got sent though

GreedyGecko · 20/03/2007 20:21

ska, good news on the regular article writing.

nikkie, just had a nosy at your stuff. at those promo dvds. Well done.

opinion health If you sign up to these aurveys I get 5points, which is £1. I've got 32points in less than 2months & I've missed a few surveys because I forgot to check my emails.

nikkie · 20/03/2007 20:41

I do ipoints takes a while to get any thing but there is a survey every few days.

GreedyGecko · 20/03/2007 21:01

I do a few. One of them though, you can only redemm when you get to £10, I've had £9.50 for about 4months & now they just send me surveys that you get competition entries.

kirstygem · 21/03/2007 11:34

was feeling really pleased as still well in the black and we have been really sensible this month. then I get a letter through yesterday with a speeding ticket and so fine of £60 . so annoyed with myself about it and the money part of it upsets me most. I made £75 on Ebay over last 3 weeks and now will have to use that for the fine

charliecat · 21/03/2007 12:31

OH kirsty gem
Thats gutting, did you not know you had been flashed?
We are now being paid monthly instead of weekly, and OUCH, what a headache. Have done a spreadsheet on Google Documents and marked everyting in green as I have paid it or allocatedit into the right bank for direct debits, standing order etc.
But OMG, hassle...at least if you bugger up weekly in 7 days you get paid again to compensate it...if I feck this up its another 4 weeks to get more oney to recify it.
And the cat, hes diabetic. Cost..er, 130 last month. And will again this month till we get him stabalised...
