Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Haven't got a credit card, cc, so it was the next best thing!

Tesco's don't advertise it much, aloveheart. We had to ring Tesco's and ask them to send an application form and it took a few weeks to set up... but it was worth it! I think I got the number on MSE. He has saved us lots of money this year.

Hi Everyone
I am new to this thread and am really trying to get myself organised. I am not a naturally organised person and really find that when things are wrote down I seem to do better.
Flamesparrow kindly emailed me the copy of the spreadsheet but for some daft reason I cant seem to get it to work, does anyone use this, its just when I enter an amount it comes up with hyphens instead!! please can anyone help as this would be ideal for me, if not has anyone got another one that I could borrow. thanks

kirstygem · 12/03/2007 09:24

Everyone seems to be doing quite well this month. We still well in the black this month and DDs are all out and paid. I made that my priority this month as been getting lots of charges for unpaid DDs over last 3 months and they really mess things up. Am going to try to reclaim bank charges as lots of people on here seem to be sussessful at it.
Also listed some of DDs 0-3 clothes on Ebay and will list her 3-6 clotehs next weekend. takes me so long to list things!!
Also been doing the £1 in a jar thing to hopefully get a break over the summer hols

grouchyoscar · 12/03/2007 11:28

thanks Charlie...I've opened a Lloyds 8% for 12 months

Waiting for abbey now

kirstygem · 12/03/2007 12:22

Abbey have been on re the 8% super ISA and bond tie in

It sounds far to good to be true. Hope Martin is right on this one as I'm going for it

GreedyGecko · 13/03/2007 21:50

wow nikkie! You've been busy ebaying! How much of that do you realistically expect to sell? Is it worth it with listing fees etc? Just wondering as I have quite a bit - hundreds of cds, some books, but having searched for the same items they don't really sell, or if they do it's for 50p, and it doesn't seem worth it. I'd do a car boot, but I never seem to get my arse in gear.

I tried selling some bigger stuff in the freeads, but very little sold, again don't want to put it on ebay as it would have to be collection, and they don't seem to do that well. So ended up freecycling loads of stuff this week. All went within 10 minutes. Even managed to get rid of some rubble someone wanted. So thats saved us petrol taking it all up to the tip.

Speaking of petrol, cc, we can't claim from Tesco as theya re only paying out those that took their car to a garage, and we fixed it ourselves.

GreedyGecko · 13/03/2007 21:53

And I've also started signing all of my emails with my website address, so hopefully that may generate some book sales.

Do you do that Flame?

nikkie · 14/03/2007 20:10

I have sold about 2/3 of my listings so far, am down to the dregs now and started stopping re listing.
So far £477!

Aloveheart · 14/03/2007 20:12

Well done nikkie!!

GreedyGecko · 14/03/2007 21:14

wow, that's really good. You're obviously determined & have the motivation. Well done.

nikkie · 14/03/2007 21:49

obsessed more like ran out of motivation now though

grouchyoscar · 15/03/2007 16:41

It was too good to be true IMHO so I've trashed the idea. It's just not suited to me tbh

Nevermind. The search continues

GreedyGecko · 15/03/2007 21:19

I'm turning into you cc! No clubcard points in my trolley, just a voucher for 20p off something, so I used it! Can't let it go to waste now can we?!

charliecat · 16/03/2007 10:12

Oh no we cant lol

GG et al...it's strange how you fall into a mindset. I started to frequent chaity shops with my MIL and now whenever I'm in town I pop in for a quick rekkie...check the pound rail, scour the kid's books and check for toys and games. I get loads of stuff for virtually nothing. I find I get moments of 'I haven't checked the Shelter shop for a while' or 'I need to go to scope in the next village'!

Best buys
Gap dungarees for under 2 pounds a pair
Buckaroo (complete) 50p
Next jumper 1 pound
M&S pure new wool lined skirt 1 quid

Cheap n cheerful me

ska · 16/03/2007 14:36

Hi everybody, been really busy with work and sick kids. So it's weeks' since I looked at this thread! Flamesparrow, your website is fab! well done. I set up an internet based business 6 months ago and it is just beginning to sort of run itself and i'm now getting income from it so persevere! Last month we ended up far less than usual overdrawn than usual so am really pleased with that and the kids seem to have got into the swing of it now. The 13 year old dsd said, 'i like it at this house, we're really thoughtful about how we spend money so it really makes us appreciate it'! (but when i took her to sainsburys at weekend ended up buying extra stuff that she sees as 'essential' Innocent smoothies, really nice but even at 2 for £4 too much for me)! i was weak as i'd had no sleep as dd was really ill. never mind, i know i can recoup it during this week and next. Did anyone hear woman's hour this morning with Andy Hamilton as guest presenter? There was a piece on about a woman who is living for a year spending no money (apart from food and medicine and uniform and shoes for the children) - it was really interesting and i'm going to investigate it. Just off to the garden centre to buy seed potatoes etc, we are going to try to grow all our own veg! feeling virtuous but it won't last.

ska · 16/03/2007 14:39

grouchy, i always look in the charity shop. In our vilage we have a great one (it's quite posh here!) and there is fab stuff, loads of bookes etc and the kids get £1 to spend as they like. Some one i know buys stuff there and sells it on ebay. but i am not very good at spotting that stuff! but at easter we are emptying the loft and am going to sell/freecycle everything i can!

charliecat · 16/03/2007 16:12

I have been charity shop hunting today, I was looking for a pan that is split in 2....so you have peas in one side and carrots in the other, for example, or rice and pasta, and you have it on the one gas ring, they have a handle each so two pans, that make one....hmm not making sense but I know what I mean...anyway, got one for £2 today:0 Very Pleased
Also it will save on gas when im cooking.....

nikkie · 16/03/2007 19:43

NO idea what you are on about but well done CC

I am so of the charity shops, ours are awful very expensive for cr*p

Ska-think that womans website was mentioned on here a few weeks ago

nikkie · 16/03/2007 19:45

Oh and we had a meeting at work and there is possibly going to be redundancies in the summer, my job is safe (for another year at least) but will be a lot less o/t going

charliecat · 16/03/2007 19:49

I have, I think boo booed on my tesco Credit Card..I sent a payment of 70 yesterday, but spent 50 today and my credit limit is £44. so im hoping my 70 gets there before the 50...arse and arse. This happens when its near the bill time. It doesnt seem to credit my payments quickly enough...even thought ive sent them in advance of the spending IYKWIM
