Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Great news Grouchy!

Also forgot to say the TC people are wirting to me by the dozen atm and I evetually phoned up ad asked which is right

man was great and said
myestimated earings for last year I should have been paid £4XXX and was paid £6XXX but cos I earned less I was actually supposed to have been paid £57XX and followed it up with ,"I am recording this and will send you a complaints form" So am going to complaint acgain and visit my MP again (should just make a regular appointment 'see you next May then')

Even more interesting my MP is John Hutton (DWP)

charliecat · 11/05/2007 21:01

Bloody hell, so they had your estimate under estimated and still overpaid you?

We are abit skint this week because i haven't budgeted very well.

Needed to get a few things so decided to go to sainsburys this afternoon. Well i am so chuffed with myself, and could get quite addicted to shopping on a budget. lol.

For £10.66 i got......

4 loafs of basic bread.
2 small pizzas
marg
yogurts
4 pts of milk
cat litter
8 dreaded sausage rolls
3 pies
cheese
15 eggs
cat biscuits.

i am so pleased so have decided that i could cut our shopping bill right down if i brought majority of value stuff because IMO there's not alot of difference.

i do buy value bog rolls because i'd rather throw 40p for 4 down the loo than £1.50 for 5 because it's got a nice pattern on the sheet. and i earned 1 school voucher and 20 points on my nectar card!! lol.

Holiday debt-free thread, help me compile some tips for when you are away from home.

charliecat · 12/05/2007 18:45

I did the shopping for £43 this week...so have just been up the shop and spent the remainder of the £60 budget on vodka and coke...more than your little shop aloveheart

Ohh, lovely day today, went to b n q for some cheapy plants, got some for £1 and altho it was pissing down and although if if anyone saw me I look like a right skank, I saw a very fat Tescos reciept on the floor so I went back and picked it up and it had a wet 78 points on it...thats over £3.50 in deals So it made my plants free with a £2.50 profit...reciept nicely dried out now
And for anyone who has a thick skin, apparently, money off coupons that start with 99 are accepted in tescos whether you have brought the product or not.

MrsWho · 13/05/2007 15:32

Apparantly the self service tills in Tesco are good for redeeming 'wrong' coupons!

Went to get some packed lunch stuff today and Tesco had loads of reduced bread and buns for 5p/7p so have filled up the freezer

charliecat · 13/05/2007 15:43

The nearest SS tills to me are in a TINY Tescos and they shout out what you are doing for all to hear...I was only buying 1 thing but it took about 2.5 mins for me to work it out
Same tescos dont sell brain cells really

OP posts:
MrsWho · 13/05/2007 16:27

I never do them either

charliecat · 13/05/2007 22:04

I paid out for some housework to be done here today...

5p for each job DDs were happy to unload the dishwasher, load it, hang out the washing, reload the dish washer, clean the cutlery drawer and fill the cutlery drawer all for well under a pound
