charliecat · 01/03/2007 20:48

Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Sorry to hear about your split Charliecat, unless you glad about it?
Hope you get yourself sorted with a computer fairly soon as I know your tips and advice would be sorely missed on here

MrsWho · 17/05/2007 19:33

Have you got to move? or can you /kids stay?

charliecat · 18/05/2007 20:20

We rent and I would like to think I will get more tax credits and housing benefit while I am building up the ebay thing.
If not im going to be really seriously gutted.
They want people off benefits so I would like to think that they will encourage it rather than stiffle it??? We will see. If I am not entitled to HB im going to put a speed injection into my selling to see if I can find the rent.

charliecat · 18/05/2007 20:25

Dp is saying hes going to go to Ireland or Scotland We are in England. He has parents in each place. I hope not. Im trying to persuade him to stay round here, but obviously I cant make him.
Getting along better already stupidly. really stupid, but pressures off, and we are both too emotionally knackered to argue.

OP posts:
MrsWho · 18/05/2007 20:29

Good luck with the benefits thing then.No experience myself but loads of posts on here so someone will ehlp you.

charliecat · 18/05/2007 20:33

I know theres a thing to tick are you self employed on the tax credits thing because i read it in the last couple of weeks, hb no idea

GreedyGecko · 19/05/2007 16:53

charliecat · 19/05/2007 17:54

But, it should be ok. It will be, theres no going back now anyway, within a day it would be back to square 1.
I am trying to get this ebay think going and havent sold a thing all day!!!!

have started to pay off the old 0% CCs as I dont think ill be able to stooze without dps hefty income coming into the house....and so we continue...

Please can I join? I have £2,500 to pay off, but only have £360 p/m income, £250 of which is rent alone-argh need help!
Am becoming a student in October though so HOPEFULLY that will help-really cross because it was all run up by ex but was in my name (I was silly, I know, but am paying for it now!!) and he refuses to pay any form of maintenance, so am quite mad as none of it went on me or dd, just him, yet I have to pay it off, and he lives rent and bill free with girlfriend.
Am managing to make min payment but want to make proper dints in it!

charliecat · 15/08/2007 15:20

Hansmummy, just under your post theres a link to the newer thread

steph101 · 15/08/2007 18:10

I wrote a msg on the other thread as i didnt see this one = i was really struggling with my debts after becoming pregnant and going on maternity leave - i was paying out a small fortune in debts each month but i went to a company called betterway debt solutions which you can call on 0844 800 4564 and they put all my debts in to one and now they manage them all for me and it costs me 150 a month! Its great! I was paying nearly 350 a month before. If you are having a nightmare then call them.

ska · 21/08/2007 18:25

do they charge you anything? how do they make their money?

steph101 · 23/08/2007 13:08

yeah they do they keep your 1st payment as an admin fee and they charge 15% of your monthly payment. so i pay 100 a month for my plan and they take 15 out of that 100 to deal with the debts and send cheques or something. i could go with a free company but they are funded by the creditors and it didnt work out for me, they kept piling on interest.

steph101 · 23/08/2007 13:10

ps they let me lower my payments to 100 as 150 was a bit much. nice people!!
