charliecat · 01/03/2007 20:48

Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

not really likely to go down well with dp.

I have catalogues, which I've paid off [smug] but when I checked the old bills, one of them had £30 cashback owing (I remember saving it for Christmas, then not finding anything I wanted)!
I've ordered new bed sheets for us

grouchyoscar · 03/03/2007 12:13

Hi Jelley, nice to find you on another thread!

Been a good girl this monhth. My account is in the red but it's under a tenner and the money is in another account by mistake. (A SO for a savings account that I thought was finished.)

Just got my Debenhams bill for my new 'handbag' but I'll pay that off when my cash comes through next week.

DH is doing the staple shopping today and we're going to make it last for at least a fortnight (but what the hell am I going to make with a load of stationery?

I'm making swish ice cream for tomorrow's dinner rather than buying a tub of expensive stuff. Bitter orange icecram (slurp)

nikkie · 03/03/2007 19:37

I am not being good this month
Was out last night (meal/2 taxis/out/drinks) £25, been out fo rlunch today another £15 and bought wireless for computer for when BB (YAY!) is sorted (Tiscali unlimited 9.99-so quite good)

GreedyGecko · 03/03/2007 20:27

Hey nikkie, you're not the only one! It was my friends birthday on Weds, so went out for a meal (£15 + petrol), another friend has been having a really tough time lately, and wanted to go out last night, so I obliged (£20 but we had a fab night), and we also booked Take That tickets for November (£50, but she's happy for me to pay her bit by bit). But...

The meal was at a Harvester, and I used to work at a different one. I asked if there were any jobs available, turns out that the assistant manager there is the guy who was bar supervisor at the one I worked at, so they spoke to him, and offered me a job there & then! I start Tuesday! It's only minimum wage (a crappy £5.35 ), our tax credits will stop when I work, but a 16.5 hour week minus petrol will make us about £20-£25 better off each week. Plus tips (hopefully at least £40 per shift, 3 shifts a week, that's £120 a week to plough into the CCs).

Oh, and it seems it was probably Tesco petrol that was to blame for our car knackering up while we were away, just a shame we didn't know anything about it, so aren't able to claim anything.

charliecat · 03/03/2007 20:51

You didnt know so cant claim? Howwwzzatt work???!!!

OP posts:
GreedyGecko · 03/03/2007 21:01

It seems that everyone else who've had the dodgy petrol have taken & kept samples of the petrol & are (trying) to claim the cost of repairs from Tesco/Morrisons/Asda.

As we were in North Wales at the time & repaired it ourselves we didn't know that it could be contaminated petrol, so obviously have no proof.

charliecat · 03/03/2007 21:13

Oh arse...

I'm sorry - been awol.

Budgetting going ok, but not great... started up a business and made a whoel £1.08 this month - butt hat was with spending oodles on advertising so I am hopeful.

Got to go and talk to benefits tomorrow, so we'll see how hopeful I am then!!!

Flamesparrow · 04/03/2007 23:08

Jas - does he need shoes? DS is having barefeet or socks with grippers until the summer, and just not walking outside.

charliecat · 04/03/2007 23:33

FS is that the nappy business? Link;)

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 04/03/2007 23:38

I'd be wrong not to link really wouldn't it - since you've asked

bumfluff

Roll up - save money here by switching to cloth

willowcatkin · 04/03/2007 23:48

Freecycle can also be useful - I have given away all my baby stuff and got some other stuff that was great.

Charity shops too providing you are happy to hang around them every day to snap up the bargains

As for wombling a friend of mine used to 'pounce' on anyone in Boots who did not have an advantage card and ask if she could have their points . However she never got 'no' for an answer and saved enough to get a longed for blender

Flamesparrow · 04/03/2007 23:50

Oh yes - our fridge died and we got a replacemtn off freecycle

charliecat · 05/03/2007 00:11

I have got a camping guide book from freecycles tonight, better than online, as you like a place, then press the back button till your blue in the face and nver find it again...with a book I can bend the corners lol.
Am seriouly looking into stoozing...I have got a 0% creditcard. Thinking of paying the rent and the council tax? if thats possible on it...putting the money straight from the wages into a savings account and then paying back the cc when the 0% period is up.
Anyone done this?
Cheer for the link btw Great site...my 6 and 9 year olds would look great in your nappys lol

Bananaknickers · 05/03/2007 13:21

I have just paid off the last of my final storecard. Hurrahhhhhhhh. Wow that feels so good. I have cut it up. now I will have to close the account somehow.

Flamesparrow · 05/03/2007 13:23

Write them a letter saying you wish to close the account. They will most likely send you offers to tempt you back - be strong.

Bananaknickers · 05/03/2007 13:47

Flamesparrow I will be strong. I am reading the Martin Lewis book at the moment too.

Jelley · 05/03/2007 13:50

cc - Are you organised enough to do that? If we did, I'd worry that the money would get spent on an Emergency, and we'd end up paying interest.

Bn -well done

Flame - no he doesn't really need shoes, ecxept to keep his socks on. He's still not letting go to walk, so no rush.

charliecat · 05/03/2007 16:14

Nothing would make me spend the money and have to pay interest lol....Yes, organised enough, will tattoo the pay back by date on my forehead

I have got The Money Diet from the library today!

OP posts:
Aloveheart · 05/03/2007 21:47

charliecat · 05/03/2007 21:57
