charliecat · 01/03/2007 20:48

Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

OP posts:
kirstygem · 07/05/2007 12:57

So please with myself as have made £60 this week
Anooyed with myself as spent £40 in Boots yesterday makeup, toiletries etc , dont know what the hell I was thinking.
Well have to get cracking to get more listed on ebay now

MrsWho · 07/05/2007 17:53

Did you get sorted with the ebay CC?

I have done well spending wise this week but will have to get on ebay & saving as we go away in 3 weeks!!!!

charliecat · 07/05/2007 19:23

Kirsty gem no smellys for the rest of the year now
I am on value bubble bath and value loo roll and using up all the smellys that are lingering in many places. I have however indulged in some wrinkle cream, at £7 a pot...and ive brought 3 pots...which is very unlike me.
But it will last for a good few months and so, well bugger it.
I am all ready to become self employed MrsWho, itching to go. But the book side of it foe every fiddly fartarsed transation is a bit grim.
I am going to go to WHS Smith tommorow and see if I can get a big book and a little one for things brought at charity shops where there will be no recipts and startfrom there. Oh and give the IR a ring, and register...

Good luck CC

I have been collecting BOGOFs on shower stuff (cheaper ranges ) so have enough for a while!

MrsWho · 08/05/2007 19:01

Spent far too much in Tesco today (mainly on chocolate and school socks (see my AIBU thread).

BUT did get loads of tights for dd2 in Sept for £1 for 2 pairs

GreedyGecko · 08/05/2007 20:50

Good luck CC, what is it that you're going to be doing? Have I missed that?

Went freezer shopping at FarmFoods at the weekend,a dn spent £27 which filled my freezer. Never thought of shopping there before, (its a bit scabby), but at those prices, can't turn it down!

charliecat · 08/05/2007 21:21

Oh farmfoods......mmmmmmmmmm, before I turned vegetarian...Oh...about 19 years ago I used to LOVE farmfoods shepards pies, little thingd 4 for 99p ......OMG...with mash and beans...
Yum Yum.
I go to iceland to fill the freezer, some stuffs ok, some stuffs VILE. But youve got to try it to know
I am just going to be selling anything and everything really GG...ive feedback of over 1000...and I dont think ive ever lost money on anything..
Im a SAHM, and bored out of my tree, and last week considered getting a JOB whilst the kids are at school...but then there holidays etc, fecking nightmare to deal with.
If I buy to sell on ebay holidays dont matter, its something I LOVE doing and I get to browse bootsales and charity shops in the name of business
Oh but the paper work is giving me a headache and ive hit the vodka on night one already

I was thinking of doing a freezer trip to Farmfoods. Is it all own brand stuff or do they have named stuff for cheap too? I do most my shopping at Tesco and get couple bits at Aldi. There is a Farmfoods and an Iceland in our town but I work fulltime and have 1 DD so dont have time to trail around them all. But if they mush cheaper than Tesco it maybe worth going to fill the freezer. DH going away for 5 weeks in JUne so that save loads on weekly shop as I happily eat cheap pasta every night but he mush more a full dinner man. Only problem may be that he forgets we trying to save money and goes out drinking with all the single lads

Aloveheart · 09/05/2007 09:49

I used to live near a farm foods it's brilliant for filling up your freezer some of the stuff is abit dubious but most is ok. I don't really like iceland stuff.

I'm upto date on bills i think.

I so nearly asked someone for their boots points yesturday but chickened out, lol. I'm not as brave as cc.

GreedyGecko · 09/05/2007 10:01

farmfoods have branded stuff too. I got youngs cod fillets which I normally pay over £4 for in Tesco, but were 2 for £6, Minimilks for the boys were 2 for £2, lots of birds eye stuff 2 for £2 or £3 etc. (I only buy branded stuff )

Aloveheart · 09/05/2007 10:04

ohh you snob, lol. {grin}

Aloveheart · 09/05/2007 10:04

that was meant to be

charliecat · 09/05/2007 10:27

Only buy branded stuff GG...you MUST try the cheaper equivilent of something each week, just one thing...
TBH I buy bulk things when they are on BOGOF instead of cheap things as i need them, but the cheaper alternatives of things are often just as nice...honestly
Wont buy cheap fishfingers for dd2 tho...oeerr grey fish...no no no.

OP posts:
kirstygem · 09/05/2007 10:33

Maybe go this weekend and fill up the freezer then . Know what you mean about branded foods though as some own brand foods can be a bit dodgy. Although Aldi has these steak pies 2 for £1 which DH totally loves

MrsWho · 09/05/2007 11:52

CC-If you are going to hit the Vodka make sure its smart price one

charliecat · 09/05/2007 12:40

Even better it was a free one Someone brought dp it for doing some work for them and I seem to have drank most of it

"Debt free 2007"? Let me give you a little tip! Pay off your debts & keep them paid off. I on the other hand, pay off over £2K of the debt, then spend £1K on a trip to EuroDisney! I'm so excited! I know its bad, but we were going to go the last 2 years, but DP being in hospital put that off, and if we go next year ds1 will be almost 7 and although he'll still enjoy it, I don't think there'll be the same 'magic'. There will be for me though no matter how old I am. Wahoo! Mickey Mouse!

MrsWho · 11/05/2007 20:36

Fio- try living out of the cupboars/freezer (maybe buy fresh fruit) but I bet you can do a week or 2 off them

Actually I need to re-do that!

charliecat · 11/05/2007 20:40

Tell you whats a bloody good idea that i lasted about a month doing till it fell off, writing down everything you have in your freezer and popping it on the front....................you know whats in there, you might even fancy something thats at the back....you buy some whatever to go with it and not the same thing thats already in there but you didnt realise.
Dogs bollocks idea.
Must do that again actually..
Why is your DHs pay so erratic Grouchy?
