charliecat · 01/03/2007 20:48

Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

I have decided to have dds birthday party at home. No hall cost ect. We have a bouncy castle so I will get that out and also trampoline. I am hoping it will cost around £60 as apposed to £150 last year ( those were the days).
I feel so guilty though. It is really hard to have to think about every penny you spend. Mind you not thinking got us in this mess in the first place so I have to do it.

Took cars in for service/ mot got nice bill of £359 for one and £150 for the other. Good thing is with my bugdet enelopes we can cover nearly half of the cost.

Went to Primark and got dd some PJ's from her brothers.God I know we are going the right way but It gets me down.

charliecat · 26/04/2007 11:34

It is the kids birthdays and the years before when youve spalshed out that make it seem a little HUMPH dont they?
Those envelopes, could you be persuaded to open a Nationwide account with e savings? you would be earning interest on that money sitting in the envelopes?
Or who do you bank with...ill see if they have an equivilent.

OP posts:
Bananaknickers · 26/04/2007 11:36

I do bank it when I have a fair amount in envelopes. I have a ISA with Abbey. Is that getting me the most interest?

Bananaknickers · 26/04/2007 11:37

What are E savings Charliecat?

charliecat · 26/04/2007 11:38

Oh its just the name for the account that the bank has.
Its like envelopes online and earning interest!

OP posts:
charliecat · 26/04/2007 11:39

Oh and ISA with abbey very good Is it the 8% one?

OP posts:
Bananaknickers · 26/04/2007 11:44

Haven't a clue. Really should take notice. I will look into that. I can see a Charliecatmoneysaving.com coming up. Giving Martin Lewis a run for his money

charliecat · 26/04/2007 11:49

Was it recently with abbey? Have a look, if it was opened ages ago they may have shifted it onto a crap rate of interest.

I have a horrible feeling it's all down to me but hope that some of it is him. Well, I do all the shopping (and this month has been hell as everybody has grown so mmuch so new shoes, jeans etc and several birthdays, AAARGH!!!)so if he never goes shopping it must be my fault. really fed up.

charliecat · 27/04/2007 12:17

Oh ska I bet there no room for a jean/shoe/birthdya budget is there?
Even just a pound or two a week?
Could you have a eat out the back of the freezer week and cut down the food shopping bill?

Debt free 2007 here we come

MrsWho · 27/04/2007 19:18

The last couple of weeks I have only been buying odd things like cheese , fruit and veg and eating from the freezer and cupboard , so must be saving like that BUT we have been buying all the summer clothes and stuff like that so its all still going out

charliecat · 27/04/2007 21:50

I have temporarily lost my Tesco credit card which is curbing my spending for now

OP posts:
MrsWho · 27/04/2007 21:59

I know my number by heart

charliecat · 29/04/2007 14:13

Ah..but thats no use in Tescos, online tho...very good to know I found it, in my jacket pocket!!!!
I have had my provisional tax credits wotsit through the post.
Last year we had an income of 11,000. We got 30 ish a week tax credits for most of the year, based on the previous years 20,000 income, then at some point they realised it was wrong and gave us a 2000 lump sum...just as dp got himself a full time job, instead of the part time he had been.
Now hes full time our expected earnings this year are 24,000 but im telling them 26,000 because if I earnt anything or if DP got a rise of bonus it would take us from one bracket to another and I dont want to be overpaid.........anyway...getting to the point. They are giving us 110 a week this year when dps earning loads. How feck faced is that?
When we needed it last year we got not enough and now they are throwing it at us.
So im going to put it away and save it and hand it back minus the interest.
And at the moment Tescos saving accounts are giving you 1000(40 deals) points for opening a savings account with them and having a £1000 balance with them on June the 31st...so they money will come in handy to fulfil that criteria.
Leaflets available to pick up in store if anyones interested.

NuttyMuffins · 30/04/2007 18:27

CC, can you reccomend a savings account that you don't have to give alot of notice too before withdrawing money ?? Oh and one that doesn't require my life history to open.

charliecat · 30/04/2007 19:28

I think ive mentioned here before nationwide.
Flex account, you can apply online and it has a seperate but still visable account called a e -saver....you can have as many of these as you like and when doing online banking this is the view you get....

Banking Account Balance

Rats £10.21
available: £10.21

FlexAccount&&&&& £0.00
available: £0.00

Savings Account Balance

CarTaxetc £199.04
available: £199.04

SewageandWater £40.00
available: £40.00

Council_Tax £1.00
available: £1.00

Phone £4.00
available: £4.00

GasandElectric £40.00
available: £40.00

TV_Licence £16.00
available: £16.00

All those under the rats and the other flexaccount are earning interest at about 5.4% and you withdraw the money into your main account(mines called rats LOL) and then withdraw at the bank as usual.
The e-savers take a few days to set up, for each one, but once they are up and running its instantly transferable into your main account.
