Egg fast starting Monday 21 July

This is the support thread for the egg fast. I have based the rules on Jimmy Moore's Eggfest. Please note that this is an experimental fast and may not be suitable for people with underlying health conditions. It is intended for people that are already following a low carb - high fat diet and are trying to break a stall or lose the last few pounds to reach their goal weight.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor or nutritionist. If you follow this fast and have any issues at all such as feeling unwell then seriously consider stopping the fast immediately. Alternatively wait until a few of us have tried it first!

THE RULES

1. Eat at least six eggs per day
This is not a calorie-restricted diet so eat to fullness.

2. Buy the best quality eggs you can
Free range eggs may contain more omega 3 fats and vitamin D.

3. Eat one tablespoon of butter per egg
Coconut oil, olive oil and mayo may also be used.

4. You may add up to one ounce of cheese per egg if desired
Make sure your cheese is low carb.

5. Drink as much water as you can: at least 2-4 litres MINIMUM
Black or bulletproof coffee, black tea, green tea and herbal tea can be added if required.

6. Add salt and keep taking your usual vitamins (if taken)
Consider extra magnesium and potassium to prevent cramps.
If you suffer from constipation then flaxseed may help.

7. Exercise daily
Even a short walk will help maintain lean muscle mass.

8. Eat three meals a day; if not hungry eat one egg
Your appetite will be reduced but keep eating to preserve lean muscle mass.

9. Follow the egg fast for three days; five days may give better results
You will be sick of eggs by the third day.

10. Transition back to your normal diet
E.g. the day after eat two egg meals and one normal meal (whatever you usually eat), the day after that eat one egg meal and two normal meals. Consider keeping on eating at least two eggs a day to maintain the effects of the fast.

Agree about them being really filling, have just forced eggs number 3 and 4 down, lovely cheese omelette. Getting quite good at making them now!

StuntNun · 22/07/2014 16:35

BPCs are great aren't they Schro? Taste like a coconut latte to me. Apparently the medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) in coconut oil can't be stored by the body as fat so they get used right away giving you an instant energy boost. Even a decaf BPC perks you up.

Blossom my DH is away on business but tbh I think he was fed up of me talking about the egg fast so it's probably a good thing.

I have just forced eggs three and four down as devilled eggs made with yucky homemade mayo as we were out of Hellmans. The appetite suppressing effect of this fast have definitely kicked in. I've only had 800 calories today so I'll have to have a big dinner.

Big dinner of what though?
Eggs!

StuntNun · 22/07/2014 16:43

Three egg omelette, a BPC and a chunk of Gorgonzola perhaps?

Stunt I was 600 odd calories under my goal (1475, odd number that calculating macros gave me) on MFP yesterday, just couldn't manage anymore. Definitely do not feel as hungry on this, which is very good. Did the devilled eggs turn out okay?

I didn't resort to having the protein shake, the BPC certainly done it's job, you were right about them, that's my energy just disappearing after it, will be having one every day now I expect! Need to get better coconut oil though.

Think I will be having another small omelette too, don't think I will manage 2 eggs though, I think 5 a day is unfortunately all I can take, I'm just not hungry.

Will probably have cream cheese pancakes tomorrow to change it up a bit.

StuntNun · 22/07/2014 18:57

The devilled eggs were rubbish Schro! I took my kids out for a two hour walk and the bribe was going to McDonalds afterwards so I didn't get my lunch till after 3. I was halfway through making the devilled eggs when I realised we'd run out of mayo so I made some but it wasn't very nice. I think I might make the Buffalo Omelette tonight in the hope it will stimulate my appetite. I don't want to undereat on my calories.

ihatethecold · 22/07/2014 19:02

I've only managed 5 eggs today.

I have also made the kids a banana loaf cake.
It's winking at me.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 19:02

That looks lovely, apart from the blue cheese! I made my devilled eggs with the Mailie mayonaise "with a hint of mustard", not cheap but I can really recommend it.
Good that you survived going to McDs and not caving in!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 19:04

Ihate I only managed that yesterday, and will be the most I will manage today, it's just too filling!

Don't be tempted by the evil banana loaf! :o

StuntNun · 22/07/2014 19:05

McDonalds is hopeless for low carb. You can get a chicken and bacon salad but it isn't great. In Burger King you can get a bunless double cheeseburger which is nice but tricky to eat!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 19:10

The big tasty burgers from Mcds have no binding or filler, %100 beef! :) And they always give me it in a breakfast tray with a knive and fork and loads of lettuce. :)

Still need to try LCing in BK.

Iamblossom · 22/07/2014 19:43

Tea was 3 scrambled eggs, and 2 oz lump of cheese.

So my list today is:

2 hard boiled eggs with butter
3 eggs scrambled with butter, lump of cheddar
3 eggs scrambled with butter, lump of cheddar

So 8 eggs, 4 oz cheddar, probably 3-4 oz butter

2-3 litres of water, 1 decaf tea with splash of ff milk, 4 decaf black coffees, 2 cans of diet coke.

The main miracle in all this is I have not had a drink in three nights. This does not happen.....ever.....

Iamblossom · 22/07/2014 19:46

2 days down!!!!

StuntNun · 22/07/2014 19:47

Very true Blossom. I wonder what tomorrow's scales will show?

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 19:48

Woo! 2 days. :o

Are you feeling better for not having a drink or are you missing it?

It will all be over soon, quite enjoying it though!

Would it be crazy to try going to an insanity class on Thursday for the first time, while I am wildly unfit and have only eaten eggs and cheese for 3 days? :/

Iamblossom · 22/07/2014 19:52

No Schro I think you should go for it. All it will burn is fat! All good!!!

I feel great for not having a drink....sleep better, no baggy eyes in the morning....even went to my dad's where I ALWAYS drink, and turned down a beautiful looking chilled glass of Sauvignon blanc, (in this heat!! The glass was sweating the wine was so cold) and a bowl of mixed salted. Drool.... My dad had to ask me twice before he heard me right.....

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 19:53

Well done! Even I contemplated a glass of wine the other night because of the heat, and I don't drink! Glad you are feeling better for it.

Iamblossom · 22/07/2014 20:34

Do we not think that any weight lost will
Just be regained when we stop this though?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 20:35

I'm not sure

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 20:36

Posted too soon, hopefully it will just kind of boost any further losses, I think my appetite has been reset anyway!

Iamblossom · 22/07/2014 20:50

Yes that's true. And a go to method to shift a few emergency pounds!

StuntNun · 22/07/2014 21:02

If you move back to low carb gradually Blossom you shouldn't regain all the weight, although you may regain some. I'm planning two egg fast meals on the first day and maybe the second, then to keep having at least two eggs a day after that.

A curious fact is that I didn't eat any eggs for ten months while I was breastfeeding my DS3 who has an egg intolerance. I figure the world owes me a few eggy days after that.

I can't continue just on eggs Sad. I got some stomach problem and must get over it for weekend as we are going to a festival.
Good luck everyone!

questions2008 · 22/07/2014 22:12

interesting you guys are all feeling full. I struggled today. yesterday i did not feel hungry but today, especially in the afternoon i was really hungry, i ate an egg and bit of cheese about 2 hours after lunch. then an hour later i was close to giving in and eating something else, so in desperation i had another egg. I ended the evening with another 3 egg scramble for dinner. So in all I had 8 eggs today just like yesterday. I think it's PMT time as felt quite crabby too. Except no one to take it out on but myself (working from home).

I just prepared Ds's lunchbox for summer camp tomorrow and for the first time in my life i prepared my breakfast and lunch too!! I made egg & mayo mash for brekkie, and tried this devilled egg business with a touch of smoked paprika. I am out in a meeting tomorrow and will be driving home around lunch so thought i should be well prepared. Also, another shopping tip, I was in sainsburys couple of days ago and picked up reduced Nude Food containers - they are brill. I got a 3 container tube, which screw into each other, bit like a tiffin system. They were only 75p each. Different combinations and sizes too. Thought they would come in handy for carrying food out and bout.

I reckon part of my "hunger" was probably a bit of boredom, haven't been out much, working from home. But hadn't felt hungry like that for the whole time I've been lc-ing. I'm hoping tomorrow will be easier. If it is, then I think I will aim to start each week with a 2-3 day egg fast. Might mix it up with a meat one too.

questions2008 · 22/07/2014 22:16

antimatter hope it gets sorted soon!
