Egg fast starting Monday 21 July

This is the support thread for the egg fast. I have based the rules on Jimmy Moore's Eggfest. Please note that this is an experimental fast and may not be suitable for people with underlying health conditions. It is intended for people that are already following a low carb - high fat diet and are trying to break a stall or lose the last few pounds to reach their goal weight.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor or nutritionist. If you follow this fast and have any issues at all such as feeling unwell then seriously consider stopping the fast immediately. Alternatively wait until a few of us have tried it first!

THE RULES

1. Eat at least six eggs per day
This is not a calorie-restricted diet so eat to fullness.

2. Buy the best quality eggs you can
Free range eggs may contain more omega 3 fats and vitamin D.

3. Eat one tablespoon of butter per egg
Coconut oil, olive oil and mayo may also be used.

4. You may add up to one ounce of cheese per egg if desired
Make sure your cheese is low carb.

5. Drink as much water as you can: at least 2-4 litres MINIMUM
Black or bulletproof coffee, black tea, green tea and herbal tea can be added if required.

6. Add salt and keep taking your usual vitamins (if taken)
Consider extra magnesium and potassium to prevent cramps.
If you suffer from constipation then flaxseed may help.

7. Exercise daily
Even a short walk will help maintain lean muscle mass.

8. Eat three meals a day; if not hungry eat one egg
Your appetite will be reduced but keep eating to preserve lean muscle mass.

9. Follow the egg fast for three days; five days may give better results
You will be sick of eggs by the third day.

10. Transition back to your normal diet
E.g. the day after eat two egg meals and one normal meal (whatever you usually eat), the day after that eat one egg meal and two normal meals. Consider keeping on eating at least two eggs a day to maintain the effects of the fast.

I need to up my water today. I was a big rubbish yesterday. Do you think I can have sugar free squash in it?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 08:45

Cat I've been using sugar free water flavouring, the Oasis mighty drops one. The guy who made the fast up said diet stuff was okay, only up to 3 a day though.

Iamblossom · 22/07/2014 09:15

126 would be fab here too stunt. Would be happy with 128 though as I suspect I wouldn't be able to maintain 126 when I return to normal low carb.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 09:20

I am feeling crap today and tempted to buy a protein shake. :( Unfortunately lowest carb here is Atkins and that's high in sugar alcohols, only other "low" ones are 11g, would ruin it. Shit, what do I do to perk me up?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 09:25

Found a diet one at 1.7

StuntNun · 22/07/2014 09:28

Are you feeling ill Schro or just need a bit of perking up? I was a bit off track with being on holiday and when I wen back to low carb I ended up with carb flu again. This fast will put you right into ketosis which can leave some people feeling nauseous. Would a piece of cheese help? Or a diet fizzy drink?

If anyone starts to feel really rough I think some extra carbs would probably sort you out, even if it's just some veg.

Feeling a bit dizzy tbh, I have low blood pressure and am not a great eater with having 2 toddlers to run after.
I have bought the shake and will mix it with water, had a look at the ingredients and it's just whey and sweetener so should be okay. Drinking a diet red bull as we speak to see if it helps and have bought a jar of pickled eggs to encourage me to eat more.
Think it will just be carb flu again, I've been keto for a while now but have been a bit relaxed with some not sp great veggies, like carrots occasionally, don't want to eat veggies today as it will up carbs too much, the shake is only 1.7 so will give that a go if I don't feel better soon.

StuntNun · 22/07/2014 09:41

Are you adding salt? If you're in ketosis then your kidney could be excreting more sodium which will take potassium with it. Drinking a lot of water exacerbates the problem. I felt weak and dizzy on Sunday. I made up half a stock cube with a little bit of salt in a mug of hot water and even though I would have expected it to be a bit horrid it seemed delicious to me. So I reckon my electrolytes were a bit low and that was just what I needed.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 09:44

I'll give that a go when I get home, I need more salt than most because of the POTS (low blood pressure and high heart rate when sitting to standing, or looking up). I add salt to everything but obviously need more.

StuntNun · 22/07/2014 09:52

Do you use LoSalt Schro? It's better for low carbing because it has potassium in as well as sodium. I was using a sea salt that had magnesium, potassium and calcium but I can't get it any more.

I keep forgetting to buy it Blush I will make sure I get it tomorrow.

ihatethecold · 22/07/2014 10:03

I'm ok thanks stuntnun.
My dh gets up at 4.40 for work.
It makes me tired.
I've also gone straight in this egg fast from being a big bread eater.
It was also the first day in months I've had no sugar.
I feel ok now. Took the dog for a long walk and just had an omelette and a bpc.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 10:08

Are you feeling okay? I couldn't have went in to an egg fast straight from being high carb, I've been under 20 carbs for a while and I'm finding this quite hard.

ihatethecold · 22/07/2014 10:17

Yes I feel fine now.
I'm sat working from home.
Maybe tomorrow the dreaded carb flu will kick in.

Pisseslikeahorse · 22/07/2014 10:53

hi all just marking my place, good luck with the eggs Smile

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 11:14

Having my first ever BPC, tastes frigging odd. Having it with 2 pickled eggs and some boursin bites and a bottle of water.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 12:07

Wow, those BPCs are like magic energy!

Iamblossom · 22/07/2014 14:02

So far so good.

Gym this morning.

2 hardboiled eggs with butter and salt for brekkie
3 eggs scrambled with butter and 2 oz of cheddar for lunch. I think scrambled with butter is my fave way to have them, might do that again tonight.

Loads of water and decaf black coffee. Finding this very easy tbh! The trick will be eating before DH comes home tonight and then having another omelette tomorrow night saying Monday night's was so nice and I fancy a change! Ha ha ha ha.....

How are you all justifying this to your other halves - have they noticed? Have you told them? Do they care? Dh would just think it was daft and lecture me on it and I can't be bothered with that. Took him 2 years to accept me low carbing!!

ihatethecold · 22/07/2014 14:19

My dh is away at work.
I will Just get on with it and hopefully be able to say after 3 days that I've lost a bit of weight.

Must admit that I don't feel great.
Feel a little nauseous.
Not looking forward to more eggs later.

So far I've had a 2 egg omelette cooked in butter.
Boiled egg with hard cheese for lunch
Bpc. Decaf
2 cups of tea with cream.
Lots of water.

ihate i'm also feeling it harder today, and I've been lc-ing for 2 weeks beforehand, you're brave to start off on a fast! I enjoyed lc-ing, not really enjoying the fast. I love eggs, don't mind them, just feeling quite hungry today.

I had a fried egg first thing, 2 scrambled eggs for 11:30, and now need another one, will probably be scrambled with 15g of cheese I think. I tested with my ketostix mid-morning and got strong ketones.

Iamblossom impressive that you are able to handle the gym too! I am hoping to get my treadmill fixed and then stick a wood plank over the arms and set up working on my laptop and walking, sick of sitting on my arse!

schrow my frother is dispatched so i will soon be on your BPC high.

Iamblossom · 22/07/2014 14:35

questions I always go to the gym on a breakfast of 2 boiled eggs so no change from that pov. I am not feeling energy depleted at all! Sorry if I am over-egging that....

Iamblossom · 22/07/2014 14:35

I think we should ask for an egg emoticon

Iamblossom · 22/07/2014 14:36

Chris Evan's radio show this morning..." How do you liiiiike....your eggs in the morning....." Grin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 22/07/2014 15:25

The frother did make it much better.

Really warm here, have had tons of water today.

DP is lc too, so no problems there.

Have just run about a massive soft play the fast crawling toddler...

antimatter · 22/07/2014 16:08

I forgot how full eggs make me.
I also like cold butter as a snack & there are babybells and other cheeses in the staff fridge for us to snack at work Grin

I am off to the festival on Friday but am sure I can keep it up till lunchtime or even evening meal in Saturday as I can boil some eggs and take them with me and also my DP will be cooking breakfast - poached eggs ... yum!

Lots of water today as very hot here.
