Egg fast starting Monday 21 July

This is the support thread for the egg fast. I have based the rules on Jimmy Moore's Eggfest. Please note that this is an experimental fast and may not be suitable for people with underlying health conditions. It is intended for people that are already following a low carb - high fat diet and are trying to break a stall or lose the last few pounds to reach their goal weight.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor or nutritionist. If you follow this fast and have any issues at all such as feeling unwell then seriously consider stopping the fast immediately. Alternatively wait until a few of us have tried it first!

THE RULES

1. Eat at least six eggs per day
This is not a calorie-restricted diet so eat to fullness.

2. Buy the best quality eggs you can
Free range eggs may contain more omega 3 fats and vitamin D.

3. Eat one tablespoon of butter per egg
Coconut oil, olive oil and mayo may also be used.

4. You may add up to one ounce of cheese per egg if desired
Make sure your cheese is low carb.

5. Drink as much water as you can: at least 2-4 litres MINIMUM
Black or bulletproof coffee, black tea, green tea and herbal tea can be added if required.

6. Add salt and keep taking your usual vitamins (if taken)
Consider extra magnesium and potassium to prevent cramps.
If you suffer from constipation then flaxseed may help.

7. Exercise daily
Even a short walk will help maintain lean muscle mass.

8. Eat three meals a day; if not hungry eat one egg
Your appetite will be reduced but keep eating to preserve lean muscle mass.

9. Follow the egg fast for three days; five days may give better results
You will be sick of eggs by the third day.

10. Transition back to your normal diet
E.g. the day after eat two egg meals and one normal meal (whatever you usually eat), the day after that eat one egg meal and two normal meals. Consider keeping on eating at least two eggs a day to maintain the effects of the fast.

Yes Blossom, so long as your ratios are right for the day it doesn't matter what proportions you have at each meal. So you could, for example have a bulletproof coffee for breakfast and then two hardboiled eggs for a snack or for lunch.

Tbh, I'm going to make a load of devilled eggs tonight to have out an about, BPC in a flask maybe?

miffy49 · 20/07/2014 18:12

I've never had BPC as I don't like cream or milk in coffee. Just a thought but wouldn't it separate out again and go yukky? I make tablespoon sized cubes of coconut oil in an ice tray and then store them in the fridge in a jar. I have one in a morning with my coffee. Bit of an acquired taste I suppose but not unpleasant.

Iamblossom · 20/07/2014 18:42

I'm starting this tomorrow.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 20/07/2014 18:50

I have no idea, I've never managed to get myself to actually drink it. Confused. Will be trying it tomorrow.

StuntNun · 20/07/2014 19:23

BPC in a flask might work okay. You would have to shake it vigorously before drinking it. My DH makes salad dressing by shaking the oil and vinegar in a jam jar and it emulsifies okay so I would think a BPC would be similar.

So who else is in for tomorrow.

ihatethecold · 20/07/2014 20:04

I'm in for tomorrow.
Although I've drunk too much of my MIL prosecco today.
Fingers crossed!

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 06:43

Weigh-in done and I'll ask DH to take some before photos.

Breakfast: BPC (15g butter, 15g coconut oil), two boiled eggs with salt, two pints of water. Vitamins, cod liver oil and magnesium supplement as usual.

I suspect MFP is going to hate me today! Grin

OP posts:
ihatethecold · 21/07/2014 09:46

I've had 2 eggs with full fat mayo and a cup of tea with a tsp of cream.

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 10:04

Still hungry so I've had a Gouda Babybel (strange but nice), another pint of water and I'm currently having a herbal tea. Roll on lunch, scrambled eggs perhaps? I think I might do fluffy scrambled eggs where you separate the yolks and whites, beat the whites, scramble the yolks then fold the whites in.

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 21/07/2014 10:04

I had 3 Scrambled Eggs with butter and Spinach, and a coffee with almond milk.

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 10:14

I found a fluffy scrambled egg recipe that could be adapted it anyone wants to try it.

ihatethecold · 21/07/2014 10:26

Am I allowed almond milk then?

antimatter · 21/07/2014 10:33

I like egs
but only hens so far

some may try duck/gees/ostrich!

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 10:38

Not according the rules ihatethecold but it's up to everyone to choose how they follow them. The original eggfest rules were designed for a diabetic so I have changed them a bit for my purposes. The point of the egg fast is to get a specific set of macros with very low carbs and to get the right ratio of fat to protein. Eating just eggs is supposed to maximise the liver's fat burning capability and provide very high satiety. If you need to tweak it to suit your own needs then keep these goals in mind. I don't know what the macro content of almond milk is but I can't see a small quantity making a huge difference in the context of your daily eating.

Thanks stuntnun.
I will stick to cream I think.

When we have done 3 days and then eased back in to normal meals as you have mentioned above, do you then do it again next week or is this it , just for these 3 days?

Personally I could do with losing a stone.

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 11:51

I think we'll have to see how it goes ihatethecold. I have it in the back of my head that I might continue on to five days if it goes well. My DH is away until Friday so it's actually easier for me to only have to cook eggs at the moment. Then I'll probably transition on to Bootcamp with the rest of the crew. There are a bunch of people on the Facebook Egg Fast group that do Monday to Wednesday every week so it's definitely an option. Let's see how we feel on Thursday morning.

ihatethecold · 21/07/2014 12:27

Is anyone else doing this egg fast on this thread?

antimatter · 21/07/2014 12:33

I remember reading that drinking lemon juice first ting in the morning (juice from 1/2 lemon diluted in a bit of water water) stimulates your liver. I wonder if that may also help here.

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 12:35

You, me, Questions and Schro were giving it a go. Is there anyone else?

OP posts:
catinbootz · 21/07/2014 12:35

Ooh I'm in.

I've been wanting to do this for ages. I haven't had anything yet today so will start now!

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 12:36

Blossom and Antimatter are you egg fasting too?

OP posts:
StuntNun · 21/07/2014 12:36

Maybe we should have had a sign up thread but it was all a bit last minute.

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 21/07/2014 12:46

Signing in! Haven't eaten yet due to crazy gum pain (nhs 24 thinks it's a wisdom tooth coming through but I have no room for it), currently making devilled eggs so will try and eat some of them. :)

I hate My almond milk is very very low carb, below 1g per 100g, my cream is usually a bit higher actually. I use almond breeze unsweetened but will be giving it up until Wed.

Stunt The gouda babybels are lush, the goats cheese ones, not so much. :)

ihatethecold · 21/07/2014 13:14

So for lunch I had 2 egg omelette with a lump of full fat Philadelphia in the middle, 'twas bloody lovely.
Not sure I will be saying that on Wednesday Grin
