Egg fast starting Monday 21 July

This is the support thread for the egg fast. I have based the rules on Jimmy Moore's Eggfest. Please note that this is an experimental fast and may not be suitable for people with underlying health conditions. It is intended for people that are already following a low carb - high fat diet and are trying to break a stall or lose the last few pounds to reach their goal weight.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor or nutritionist. If you follow this fast and have any issues at all such as feeling unwell then seriously consider stopping the fast immediately. Alternatively wait until a few of us have tried it first!

THE RULES

1. Eat at least six eggs per day
This is not a calorie-restricted diet so eat to fullness.

2. Buy the best quality eggs you can
Free range eggs may contain more omega 3 fats and vitamin D.

3. Eat one tablespoon of butter per egg
Coconut oil, olive oil and mayo may also be used.

4. You may add up to one ounce of cheese per egg if desired
Make sure your cheese is low carb.

5. Drink as much water as you can: at least 2-4 litres MINIMUM
Black or bulletproof coffee, black tea, green tea and herbal tea can be added if required.

6. Add salt and keep taking your usual vitamins (if taken)
Consider extra magnesium and potassium to prevent cramps.
If you suffer from constipation then flaxseed may help.

7. Exercise daily
Even a short walk will help maintain lean muscle mass.

8. Eat three meals a day; if not hungry eat one egg
Your appetite will be reduced but keep eating to preserve lean muscle mass.

9. Follow the egg fast for three days; five days may give better results
You will be sick of eggs by the third day.

10. Transition back to your normal diet
E.g. the day after eat two egg meals and one normal meal (whatever you usually eat), the day after that eat one egg meal and two normal meals. Consider keeping on eating at least two eggs a day to maintain the effects of the fast.

Have now also had a 2 egg omelette too, made with 2 eggs, 2 sticks of butter, one stick of le roule and a little grated garlic cheese. Was lush, had it with some posh mustard mayo on the side.

Thinking I could eat this everyday atm but agree with you ihate, will probably be saying different on Wed! :o

Perfect! On my way to dental appointment so have still only had an omelette and a cheese string, will have devilled eggs when I get home. :)

Iamblossom · 21/07/2014 18:16

I'm in yes.

Had two hard boiled eggs for breakfast (my usual breakfast anyway). Then left the house for a day in Bristol without my lunchtime eggs (dick) so have just got home and when they have cooled down will scarf another two as am starving.

Tea will be a 3 egg cheese omelette cooked in butter.

Loads of water.

Tomorrow will be harder as am at home all day but am feeling quite motivated!

Interesting that people do 3 days every week, I might try that....need to keep it on the downlow from dh though as otherwise he will go on and on and on and on and on and on and on...[repeat forever]

Can we have cream then?

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 18:18

Not by the rules Blossom but you need to tweak the rules to suit you. They're really more like guidelines!

Iamblossom · 21/07/2014 18:20

Ah but if I don't lose a few pounds I will blame it on the tweak....Wink

Viviennemary · 21/07/2014 18:20

Be prepared to get gallstones if following this diet. The Atkins diet gave me gallstones and this is fairly similar. And gave another colleague severe digestive problems. Be warned.

Iamblossom · 21/07/2014 18:27

Thanks Vivienne.

I've been on Atkins for three years so am fairly happy that won't happen to me, but worth everyone being aware of your experiences.

Viviennemary · 21/07/2014 18:29

I didn't mean to be fierce. But gallstones are just so horrible and painful that I just fired off that post. Glad you aren't having problems.

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 18:30

Thanks for the warning Vivienne. It's only a three-day fast, not a diet. Gallstones take a long time to grow. Still it is a caution against doing this fast weekly for a prolonged period. In my case I'm hoping to get a quick weight loss then go back to my normal way of eating.

Iamblossom · 21/07/2014 18:32

Me too stunt nun, although I reserve the right to repeat it the week before two weeks in a bikini!!!

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 18:32

Sorry I cross posted there. You're quite right to bring it up Vivienne, gallstones sound quite horrendous.

OP posts:
Iamblossom · 21/07/2014 18:32

If it works that is....

antimatter · 21/07/2014 18:34

Vivienne - Atkins is completely different diet.
It is very high in protein.

Yes, I am going to follow this for few days.

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 18:39

Ah but it's the cholesterol Antimatter, I've had nearly 2000 mg of cholesterol today and you're supposed to stay below 300 mg!

OP posts:
Iamblossom · 21/07/2014 18:52

I saw a programme once which set out to prove copious amounts of eggs did not actually raise your cholesterol levels. The findings supported that assertion.

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 18:58

But it's the amount of cholesterol in the gall bladder that is the factor in the formation of cholesterol gallstones. My knowledge of biology isn't adequate to work out the relevance though.

OP posts:
antimatter · 21/07/2014 19:01

So what happens on days we eat 30 g of cholesterol in a day? We aren't dying having not enough?
Our liver produces it.
So if we ear more cholesterol we free our liver from producing it.
authoritynutrition.com/how-many-eggs-should-you-eat/

I remember quite few years ago my sis-in-law who is a Consultant and herself suffers from high cholesterol telling me that in case of borderline High cholesterol you may make difference to it's level by adjusting diet, but in case of most people with cholesterol problem it is genetics we ought to blame.

The thing is that anecdotal evidence people provide i.e. - "I followed Atkins and got gallbladder stones" can't be used to draw conclusion because that person might have had that condition and it would have flared up anyway.

I bet your body then goes and either burns extra cholesterol or deposits of it.

Your body, mainly your liver, produces 75 percent of your cholesterol; your small intestine also aids in both the creation and absorption of cholesterol. The average diet adds another 300 to 500 mg of cholesterol.

antimatter · 21/07/2014 19:06

I just read that loosing weight fast can cause cholesterol gallstones.

Viviennemary maybe you experienced that?

StuntNun · 21/07/2014 19:07

I suspect it's only a factor in people who already have a tendency towards gallstones. According to the Diet Doctor a low carb high fat diet can cause gallstones to initially worsen but then improve. Vivienne was only posting out of concern that there were risks but I think the short nature of the fast means it isn't an issue.
