May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - Final weigh-in and ongoing chat

BIWI · 08/07/2024 08:34

Morning all Flowers

Here's the spreadsheet for its final outing although that said, you'll see that @FinallyHere has added extra columns for anyone who wants to keep using it

I hope that all has gone well - and I notice that we have at least 2 Bootcampers who have reached/exceeded the 1 stone mark, which is fantastic!

Just because we've reached the end of the 8 weeks doesn't mean that you have to stop - or stop chatting. We'll keep this thread going for as long as people want to use it, and I'll start a new one once this one gets full.

I’ve just popped my weight in the spreadsheet and there’s around 8 of us still entering and those total losses are amazing. @aimingforthesky is 19 lbs!!!! Blooming well done you! And there’s a few 17lbs etc too. I’m very pleased with my 8. But it’s inspiring to see those numbers! 👏🏻👏🏻

Lougle · 05/08/2024 08:39

Well done @NotDonna! I'm up to 18.2 and tbh, if I lost another 3lbs I'd be exactly where I planned, but I'm pretty happy with where I am now. I expected to put on this week because we went to a wedding on Saturday, but I've still lost ½lb overall this week. KOKO!

NotDonna · 05/08/2024 09:06

Well done you @Lougle those little half pounds make a difference!
I’ve just looked at the Sushi Samba menu and there’s ceviche, which I love and should be safe plus salads & veggie sides. So I’m thinking I can avoid sushi & gyoza and cocktails! And I’ll have a Caesar salad for lunch today & REALLY up the water.

UnOeufIsEnough · 05/08/2024 09:36

A slightly brutal 4.6lb on this week but I'm just back from holiday so good motivation to get stuck back in!

It's so nice to have this thread and the spreadsheet still running. Apologies for being quiet but it is all massively appreciated! Fabulous work by everyone carrying on!

Our builders are 95% done so the painting has started! DH enjoys it but I hate it. I don't mind the actual act of painting a wall but the prep for getting started and the clean up afterwards gives me the rage 🤣 I like instant gratification 🤣🤣

Baystard · 05/08/2024 09:54

I just wanted to pop back and thank @BIWI for running bootcamp, and apologise for lurking. I have poor working memory and use MN on my phone browser. Between the two things I find it hard to keep up or even to remember who to tag when I comment, then I panic and go quiet. I'll try harder in future!

Strict week for me, back to work which is a good excuse for a reset and do another couple of weeks of strict BC.

TheOnlyMrsW · 05/08/2024 09:54

@NotDonna sushi samba sounds absolutely brilliant (although I can't stand the stuff and am allergic to things which would make it difficult anyway). I'm very guilty of popping in and out when I've been bad but am very grateful to all involved in this lovely community, I always read even if I don't post.
Still hovering around the same weight, am tending to add 4-5lbs when we have a big weekend, then it comes off and then we have another thing planned and round we go again. I'm resigned to yoyoing for the next few weeks - festival last weekend, week/10 days at home, then another this weekend, then DD's results and all that will bring. Bank holiday weekend we're volunteering at a festival which will make it even harder to manage - they're a disaster for LC at the best of times, but being pretty much constantly busy with little window to eat will basically mean snacks for the whole time! At least when I'm working I can't drink so might not be a complete wash-out! Then away with friends the first week of September and planning a complete reset after that.............looking at it all written down I always think that it's a lot. I have a tendency to book things in isolation without realising that they're all close together!

NotDonna · 05/08/2024 17:04

I think it’s very easy to get complacent too and start thinking a bit of carbs here or there won’t hurt but it’s amazing how it can add up. I’ll be planning everything then forget and have a latte - like I just did at the hairdressers! I was meant to be strict this week but by 11am I’d forgotten. And it’s day one! 🙄 The other biggie for me is to not make a minor blip (like the 11am latte) into a ‘fuck it’ situation but to see it as a blip and koko! I find the hardest eating at friends. I can usually navigate a cafe / restaurant but when others are cooking for you it’s much more difficult.

Afternoonteavirgin · 05/08/2024 17:43

I am so much happier with my body now having done this for a while. I feel like it looks quite 'neat' now instead of bits of random flab all over the place 😂

I am going to a festival on Thursday so will probably put it all back on there (festival food, cider etc) but I am going to try to not go overboard, and will take some healthy food with me, only eat in the arena once a day. I'll be back on it once I am back home.

Timeforicecream · 05/08/2024 20:15

Hi sorry, when is the next boot camp? I really need to start losing weight.

NotDonna · 05/08/2024 21:17

@Timeforicecream probs a while as this one has only just finished and biwi needs to take a decent break. BUT if you thoroughly read the rules for strict bootcamp at the start of the first thread I’m sure we can answer your questions. The main n thing that ppl seem to miss is having proper full fat, NO low fat nonsense whatsoever! And to drink copious amounts of water. The rest is quite straight forward if you read the rules and look at the attached spreadsheet (at the start of each thread).

NotDonna · 05/08/2024 21:22

Well Sushisamba was rather delicious and although I’ve no idea how much sugar were in the sauces I think it was pretty LC compliant. Ceviche, tradito, steak with chimchurri & a gorgeous salad, a fair few gins with slimline tonic. I swerved to gyoza, nigiri & tempura. Was blooming gorgeous! And a lovely catch up with Hong Kong friends we’ve not seen for 20 years!

Hi @NotDonna thank you, I do find it very useful. I did the boot camp a few years ago and lost 3 stone. Of course it’s all back on again! I hope @BIWI get the break she needs and in the mean time I will starts with lowering my carb intake which is atrocious at the moment.

NotDonna · 05/08/2024 23:55

@Timeforicecream it helps with accountability if you post your food & drinks on the thread each day - especially at the beginning. I’m planning on having a strict week so will be doing this. It’s also a good idea to plan your meals in advance, shop for them and get rid of all temptations. The latter is impossible for me with 3xDDs at home and the youngest needing to be fattened up but I’m learning to look away!

Afternoonteavirgin · 06/08/2024 08:10

I am down to 9st12lb.

I am not quite sure what I was before, because of my issue with my scales not being viable due to wonky flooring, but I was at least 10st 6. So that's a result!

I'd like to be about 9st. Not sure if it is realistic-I was that weight while younger, but I work out a lot (weight training) now. I have visible muscles in my limbs and am quite 'stocky'. I am only 5'2 however.

I might try for 9st 7lb and then reassess!

Lougle · 06/08/2024 08:11

I've just got so cross. There is a Facebook page for "The New You Plan" which is a VLCD plan. They are paying £2 per meal for 150 calories of processed crap.

The 'burger' contains

Protein blend (soy protein, egg white and whole egg powder) ; wheat flour (gluten) ; vegetable fat preparation (soybean oil and sunflower oil ; maltodextrin ; milk protein ; emulsifier : soy lecithin ; antioxidants : ascorbyle palmitate, alpha tocopherols) ; inulin ; acidity regulators : potassium chloride, magnesium oxide ; stabilisers : magnesium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate ; flavour ; dehydrated onion ; vitamin and mineral mix (potassium citrate, ascorbic acid, ferric pyrophosphate, DL-alphatocopheryl acetate, nicotinamide, zinc oxide, retinyl acetate, cupric gluconate, D-pantothenate calcium, manganese sulphate, D-biotin, sodium selenite, cholecalciferol, potassium iodide, pyridoxine hydrochloride, cyanocobalamin, thiamine hydrochloride, riboflavin, pteroylmonoglutamic acid, retinyl palmitate, thiamin mononitrate, phytomenadione, chromium chloride, sodium fluoride, ferrous fumarate, sodium molybdate) ; red bell pepper ; colour : caramel ; thickener : xanthan gum ; spices ; aromatics herbs ; yeast extract ; salt ; baking powder (sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate, calcium sulphate) ; sweetener : sucralose.

No wonder they're losing weight! How can they pump that rubbish in and call it healthy??

Afternoonteavirgin · 06/08/2024 08:13

I think the 'New You' plan is for those who are seriously overweight, endangering their health-and tries to mimic the NHS 'Soups and Shakes' plan for those who are the same, perhaps trying to avoid invasive surgery and just get the weight off quickly. It's recommended that you're monitored by a GP while doing it.

Not the healthiest I agree but neither is being extremely overweight. I think It's a 'last resort' type of thing.

Afternoonteavirgin · 06/08/2024 08:18

FWIW, I am getting those on fb too!

BIWI · 06/08/2024 09:02

Whereas if they just made a burger with beef mince, there would be one ingredient.

@TheOnlyMrsW and @NotDonna what you're both describing is life beyond Bootcamp! It's perfectly normal for weight to fluctuate every day, and when you reach target, even if you stick to it religiously, 100%, it will still go up occasionally. What both of you are doing is managing to eat low carb most of the time but also allow higher carb meals/days to fit in with your overall lifestyle.

Which sounds perfect to me.

@Timeforicecream sorry there are no plans for another Bootcamp right now, but there are plenty of us here to help you out and cheer you on Flowers

@Afternoonteavirgin thats a great loss well done you. That’s similar to what I’m doing. Currently 10.10 and ideal would be 10 but I’m thinking of aiming for 10.5, maintaining there for a good while and seeing how I feel. To be honest, I should focus on my strength and fitness as walking up from some of those Cornish beaches was a killer!! Because of broken ankle & surgeries etc I’ve done zero exercise since xmas! I really need to find something I can get into.

TheOnlyMrsW · 06/08/2024 11:14

@BIWI that's what I'm aiming for, it's a mindset change remembering that just because I slip up or have a weekend off then it's permission to go back to carbs full time as I've failed.........working on it though.
@Afternoonteavirgin love festivals, the music, the "family" that we often only see at these gigs, the whole vibe but the food often leaves a lot to be desired and not just for LC.
@NotDonna I'm the same but a stone ahead, seem to be maintaining between 11.8 - 11.10 with little effort but would be closer to a healthy BMI if I was 11st dead, maybe after my September reset. For now will koko as best I can

NotDonna · 06/08/2024 11:20

Maybe there’s a business opportunity at festivals for some LC food options! Years ago in the USA at a burger king I had an option of no bun and they wrapped the burger in lettuce with the gherkin, mayo etc (no plastic cheese) and it was the best thing Ever!! VERY messy eating but blooming delish!

Maybe! Although I suspect very few people would go for them. Most people just want booze and junk. Me included Grinbut I will try to not be too unhealthy. I avoid anything deep fried as a given, I don't want to come back having totally undone all my hard work (and expense)!

TheOnlyMrsW · 07/08/2024 10:28

Festival food is definitely moving away from just junk (at least superficially), the last we went to had the usual burger, chicken and fish and chips but also bunnychow, curry, pizza but cooked fresh in a woodfired oven and sourdough toasties, again cooked to order on a massive plancha with a properly looked after GF option. BUT none of these are LC friendly at all unless you skip the rice with the curry (and I'm pretty sure that the veggie version had potatoes in!) so I just try to make the best choices I can. So I had the bunnychow but as nachos rather than in the bread and DH ate the majority of the tortilla chips, skipped the pizza altogether, had curry and left the rice and had a quarter of DD's toastie and they all tasted really good. Try to keep up the water and drank less alcohol than in previous years - hot weather definitely helps with that..........

This weekend we'll be able to have a big brunch every morning before going in as it's close enough to drive and that will keep me going for most of the day - DH will eat there and I might sneak the odd chip! I'm Des for the weekend as well so will help keep to plan. The next one we're volunteering so will have a proper kitchen and fridges where we can cook in advance and heat up while we're there, also can't drink when "on duty" and I'd be useless if I did drink anyway!

Breakfast today was two huge cups of peppermint tea, chorizo, cherry toms, spinach and peppers fried with butter and then poached eggs and guacomole on top, I'm pretty stuffed and there's enough of the fried up stuff for tomorrow. Dinner is pulled pork from the freezer, and roast veg, DH will add wedges or tortilla chips to his...............KOKO all!

EasilyDisturbed · 07/08/2024 10:38

Just popping back in to say hello, I was a previous version of ED initials on the last BC but don't think I've posted on this thread. A huge thanks to @BIWI and @FinallyHere for all the work that goes into them.

I am still not sure if the BC way of eating is the right one for me long term as I don't enjoy it, but I must say when I stick to it it works and I really don't want to go the UPF/injections routes. I have just signed up to Slimpod which is a psychology based system with no food rules but it gently nudges you towards your chosen healthy eating plan so can be used with any WOE to see if that sorts out some of the demons.

Baystard · 07/08/2024 14:03

Your breakfast sounded lovely @TheOnlyMrsW. What is bunnychow?!
