Jan ’20 – Week 1 Low Carb Bootcamp – Here we go!

StuntNun · 13/01/2020 05:56

Welcome to the January 2020 Low Carb Bootcamp. I know some of you have already started eating low carb so please share your good experiences to give the rest of us some inspiration as we begin our weight loss journey.

Make sure you’ve read the ten Low Carb Bootcamp rules. There are some shopping list and meal plan suggestions on the preparation thread.

If you need recipe inspirations then there we have hundreds on the meat recipes thread, the poultry recipes thread, and the vegetarian recipes thread. Note that vegetarians may include small quantities of legumes, nuts and Quorn right from the start to make sure they’re getting enough protein. There is also thread of low carb products people have found in the shops.

We weigh in every Monday so add your starting weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you’re on a mobile or tablet and can’t get the spreadsheet to work then please post your entry on this thread and someone will add it for you. Some people choose to record their starting weight as 100 if they don’t want to share their actual weight. I also urge you to make a note of your waist measurement as sometimes we can lose inches without losing pounds on this way of eating. Some people like to have a goal pair of jeans or a dress that they can try on throughout Bootcamp so see how the fit improves over time. Others like to take ‘before’ photos that they can use for comparison later on.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do ask. Bootcamp has been running for nearly ten years so we have lots of expertise to share with you.

Started last week- although only properly since the Wednesday and I lost 5lb! So so pleased and motivated to push on.
Breakfast- two boiled eggs mashed with butter.
Had lunch out today but had looked at the menu in advance. Stayed strong and had a poached duck egg with half an avocado off their brunch menu which worked well.
Dinner- chicken with melted cheese and bacon on top with broccoli and asparagus.
Snacks- cheese string and pepperami.

Too much processed stuff but was out and about so will hopefully get better. MUST drink more water though- failed at that in a big way today!

Hagbeth are the ' cookie dough keto fat bombs' bootcamp compatible?

whitershadeofpale · 14/01/2020 00:39

Slightly off topic but has anyone watched The Magic Pill on Netflix? It talks about keto which is stricter than bootcamp but I found it very inspiring and useful to get over the mental hurdles about fat and health.

managedmis · 14/01/2020 00:45

Malt & barley smoked cod, bubble & squeak, poached hen's egg, kale, Hollandaise sauce

^

I'd have this, but skip the bubble

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/01/2020 03:22

having just dropped myself unceremoniously into ketosis... trust me, you’ll know

Insomnia, check
Weird taste in mouth, check
Headache, check
Not craving carbs, check

Fortunately several boot camps have taught me that the temporary keto headaches means no migraines for the foreseeable, the weird taste in my mouth needs more WATER WATER WATER and the insomnia won't kill me and actually I need less sleep on this WOE, which is very weird. Normally I need 8 hours, this WOE I need 6-7.

Breakfast: eggs and butter
Lunch: chicken, cucumber, salad dressing, carrots (small number!), avocado and cheese
Dinner: pork belly and broccolini in butter

Mmmmmmm butter

Teapotdespot · 14/01/2020 06:33

Well, I’ve had a whoosh Confused

As of yesterday i had lost 5lbs last week which I was extremely pleased about, as of today I’ve lost 8.4 Shock in 8 days!

Madness.

PinkSubscriber · 14/01/2020 06:46

I watched the magic pill last night. It’s interesting isn’t it and it has helped cement in my mind why we need to eat this way after years of being fed the opposite.

It’s definitely worth a watch for anyone doing this boot camp.

StuntNun · 14/01/2020 06:48

Watch out for these sorts of foods as they can be easy to overeat. Also fat bombs, bulletproof coffee etc. aren't needed unless you're a few pounds from your ideal weight and struggling to lose, in which case increasing your fat macro can help. While this is a low carb high fat way of eating, it's best to stick with the natural fats found in food and added during cooking. If you're adding coconut oil to drinks, or snacking on slices of butter, or eating spoonfuls of cream from the pot through the day, or making fat bombs then you may inadvertently be slowing or stopping your weight loss.

I'm going out to Yo Sushi today which I thought would be a total nightmare for low carbing but I downloaded their menu and there's actually loads of stuff that's low carb. I'm looking forward to it now!

Blimey Teapot! Congrats!

Managedmis I think your suggestion is winning!

MrsBertBibby · 14/01/2020 07:16

Yowzers! 4 pounds overnight!

TerpsichoreanMuse · 14/01/2020 07:48

I'm a day late but hope I can join? I generally weight on Thursdays after my three days of not-exactly-fasting-but-cutting-back-after-the-weekend. But I'll add today's weight to the chart and see how I go.

I have a stone to lose to get to my happy place. Lost 7lb before Christmas and put it straight back on.

TerpsichoreanMuse · 14/01/2020 07:49

Oh, I can't seem to add a row. Please can someone add me? 9st 8.3lb.

SayrraT · 14/01/2020 07:59

Hi losers Smile

Going to try really hard to keep up with this thread as it definitely helps me stay on track.

I first did BC in 2014 and did really well, lost 3.5 st. Then I kind of maintained, then put on, then lost a bit until here I am. Exactly as fat as I was the first time I did this.

I know everyone is busy but I find that when I'm very busy at work that this WOE is harder for me to stick with as when I need something quick I just end up eating eggs! Then I get fed up and I fall off the wagon.

Anyway, reading your messages and stories is very motivating so keep them coming Grin

Also getting inspiration from your food diaries so thanks for those too.

Today

B: three fried eggs, coffee with cream
L: duck breast with green beans, FF yogurt with vanilla powder
S: mini cheese, pork scratchings, boiled eggs (snacks only if required)
D: still to decide maybe seafood courgetti with a creamy garlic sauce or a fresh lime sauce?

I've ordered a box of salt & vinegar pork scratchings as I find these very handy when I go to (horse) competitions with my crisp eating friend! Anyone who competes will know that eating is a bit haphazard due to different classes/nerves/meeting people and running out of time! The pork scratchings are handy and stop me buying chips.

prettybird · 14/01/2020 08:01

@AthelstaneTheUnready - please would you add Terpsichore Smile

BrassicaBabe · 14/01/2020 08:04

I've had it on my list to watch The Magic Pill for a while.

No fridge in German office Sad Will my coleslaw survive?!

B: 2 babybel
L: cabbage coleslaw. (Maybe fermented)
D: think we're going to a steak house. A relief because they normally book pizza, pasta or Carby McCarbface for dinner Hmm

BIWI · 14/01/2020 08:04

I know I'm on holiday but ... 👀 😎

@Hagbeth - I'm not sure this is really a good menu overall. I understand that repetition can make life easier in many ways, but it also leads to boredom. If you get bored the it is very easy to start cheating and adding the wrong things.

Why are you weighing your mayo? There's no need to limit fat on this WOE, equally why just a 'drizzle' of olive oil?

Where is your veg? Four cherry tomatoes and half an avocado isn't
enough - especially as they're both technically fruits! You need more veg for the nutrients as well as the fibre.

I'm also concerned you think you're eating too much!! This WOE isn't about deprivation. Eat till you're satisfied (as long as its low carb of course)

And definitely ditch the fat bombs! We're avoiding sweet things in the first two weeks of Bootcamp as we're trying to break the hold that gust has over us - if you keep eating sweet stuff that's going to be much harder to achieve. You would be much better off getting your fat from your meals/food.

Please go back and re-read Bootcamp rules

Breakfast:
2 boiled eggs
3 Bacon
1 Cherry tomato
30g Hellman’s Full fat Mayo

Lunch:
2 boiled eggs
3 Bacon
1 Cherry tomato
30g Hellman’s Full fat Mayo

Dinner:
1/2 Mozzarella Ball
2 Cherry Tomato 🍅
1/2 Avocado
Drizzle of Kalamata extra virgin oil
2 cookie dough keto fat bombs

Probably a bit too much for dinner but in my defence I’m pre- menstrual and I needed “something “!

BIWI · 14/01/2020 08:06

Sorry @StuntNun for jumping in Grin

HouseTornado · 14/01/2020 08:38

Morning all.

Ready for D2 and feeling leaner already and urge to gnaw my own arm off has magically disappeared!

Going to log my food each day just as a way to check in (and get ideas for other meals!).

BF: Home made egg mayo & param ham
L: Lettuce cups with tuna mayo
D: Chicken breasts with mozerella and lots of broccoli

Lots of water, herbal tea and de-caff coffee.

WFH today but will get out later for a brisk walk.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

waspfig · 14/01/2020 08:43

Well I seem to have lost 2 and 1/4 pounds in day 1 so that's motivating.

I think I didn't eat big enough meals yesterday and ending up snacking a lot on olives, and cheese. I think too much dairy overall. I managed 3.2L of water though which I'm pleased with.

Today I've started with a big breakfast so hopefully will feel fuller. I'm off to soft play with the kids so have packed cucumber and pate to snack on as they pretty much only serve carbs there!

Today's plan:
3 egg omelette cooked in butter with smoked salmon and soured cream
Leftover meatloaf with mushroom sauce and green veg
Chicken thighs something or other with FLGV
Snacks if needed - cucumber and pate, Greek yoghurt and berries, cooked meats

VeryLittleOwl · 14/01/2020 08:49

Morning - apologies for not joining in yesterday, I've got a ridiculously busy week and then to help matters, Storm Brendan knocked out the internet all afternoon and evening.

Yesterday was B: yoghurt, L: chicken salad, S: homemade chilli with FLGV.

Today will be B: yoghurt, L: chicken salad, S: chicken wrapped in bacon with FLGV.

The shorts are staying firmly in the drawer until I've got back down to where I was before, which may be a few weeks...

StuntNun · 14/01/2020 09:02

Everyone don't worry about keeping up with the thread if you're busy. It will calm down once we're through the first few days.

Welcome Terpsichore it's fine to weigh on Thursdays if that suits you better. When I was losing weight my lightest day of the week was always Tuesday which made Monday weigh-ins a little frustrating.

I love salt and vinegar pork scratchings Sayrra I get mine in Sainsburys. I have to hide them from my children though as they love them too. If anyone is looking for pork scratchings the Awfully Posh salted ones are lowest carb and don't contain any additives. Or if you're near a Morrisons you can buy pork skin and make your own or make chicharrones which are much easier to make than to spell!

Grin at BIWI! Get back to your holiday of a lifetime!

Teapotdespot · 14/01/2020 09:04

Today’s menu:

B: creamy coffee
L: Italian wedding soup
D: roast pork with ALL THE CRACKLING and flgv covered in butter Grin

My MiL called me last night to ‘voice her concern’ about my ‘extreme diet plans’ Hmm DH has casually mentioned to her in passing that I’d started LCHF Angry

She’s lost 4st over the last 10 years on slimming world and believes it’s the only way to eat healthy, she’s evangelical about it despite the fact she’s constantly hungry and constantly eating food-that’s-not-really-food all day every day. By that I mean things like syn free versions of unhealthy foods that are just gross, but we have to sit there pretending that the fat free, sugar free, joy free concoctions are exactly like the real thing Even though they generally taste like wallpaper paste and unhappiness Hmm So, I tend to avoid weight and diet conversations with her if I can help it.

Anyway, I reluctantly told her my GP had advised me to eat this way because of PCOS and that all bodies respond to different diets and it’s about finding the right fit for you. She was having absolutely none of it and put on this fake worried voice and said she knew I was going to wreck my health forever...

I’m a bit shaken by it in all honesty. The last thing you need at the start of any WOE is doubt, and she’s put a niggle in my head. I know full well from all the research I’ve done that for a woman with PCOS it really is the best option for weight loss, even had a GP tell me the same. I just can’t shake the ‘fat is so bad for you’ mentality Confused

prettybird · 14/01/2020 09:14

Teapotdespot - you will come across people who will try to sabotage you. In some cases it's because they are jealous that you appear to be losing weight easily yet still enjoying your food unlike them Hmm

I know it's your MIL but ignore her - you've done your research, you've been advised to do this by your GP (your mum is not a GP) and you've already seen that it works.

I bet you've eaten more "real" food and veg in the last week than your MIL eats on her Slimmer's World diet. Grin

Tenementfunster · 14/01/2020 09:17

Hi Athelstan
Is there a chance you could add me? My weight is a quite impressive 14.4lb. Diabetes rampant in the family. Must get 4 stone off this year. Lost 3lb last week with low carb prep for bootcamp.
Good luck all

Tenementfunster · 14/01/2020 09:18

I agree with pretty bird. There’s always someone going to piss on your (low carb equivalent) chips.
Ignore or direct her to the research from GP Dr David Unwin
