Welcome to the January 2020 Low Carb Bootcamp. I know some of you have already started eating low carb so please share your good experiences to give the rest of us some inspiration as we begin our weight loss journey.

Make sure you’ve read the ten Low Carb Bootcamp rules. There are some shopping list and meal plan suggestions on the preparation thread.

If you need recipe inspirations then there we have hundreds on the meat recipes thread, the poultry recipes thread, and the vegetarian recipes thread. Note that vegetarians may include small quantities of legumes, nuts and Quorn right from the start to make sure they’re getting enough protein. There is also thread of low carb products people have found in the shops.

We weigh in every Monday so add your starting weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you’re on a mobile or tablet and can’t get the spreadsheet to work then please post your entry on this thread and someone will add it for you. Some people choose to record their starting weight as 100 if they don’t want to share their actual weight. I also urge you to make a note of your waist measurement as sometimes we can lose inches without losing pounds on this way of eating. Some people like to have a goal pair of jeans or a dress that they can try on throughout Bootcamp so see how the fit improves over time. Others like to take ‘before’ photos that they can use for comparison later on.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do ask. Bootcamp has been running for nearly ten years so we have lots of expertise to share with you.

OK the chicken is skinless (file) Blush
I doubled checked the German sausage and it's not called Isterband (that's Swedish) but Bratwurst and it only has 0.7 carbs per 100g. Phew.
Sorry for the confusion.
Back to the kitchen!

Summery1 · 14/01/2020 17:46

Lunch: Salmon with roast peppers, coleslaw (ready made 5.1g carb per 100g), cabbage.

D: I'm swimming tonight and when I come home, I'll have a mug of (homemade) stock with cream and salt.

Snack: cup of coffee with splash of milk Blush at my mums.

Summery1 · 14/01/2020 17:50

@Hagbeth you've to watch sausages! Sneaky feckers. Happy to hear you're within the roolz. Grin

PurpleHoodie · 14/01/2020 17:53

I highly recommend watching The Magic Pill (on Netflix).

Summery1 · 14/01/2020 17:55

@Teapotdespot
Does it take ages to make wedding soup? I've bought the mince and veg but...

DiscontentedWoman · 14/01/2020 18:01

B: HB eggs mashed with butter
L: vat of cauli/broccoli/stilton soup + egg mayo + leaves
D: Buffalo wings done in butter and wing sauce, blue cheese dip (mayo + stilton + soured cream), pile of celery batons, salad + dressing - everyone else is having pizza.

Tried the S&V pork crunch - like that, has a nice sharp flavour plus it is stocked in my wee Sainsburys local so that is handy.

so far about 3l of water, plus a couple of mugs of decaf black coffee

DiscontentedWoman · 14/01/2020 18:05

Roasting some yellow sticker Mediterranean veg whilst the oven is on - thought it would be nice for packed lunch tomorrow. It's mostly courgette by the looks of it. Plus I have more of the broccoli soup left for tomorrow.

StuntNun · 14/01/2020 18:13

Notwiththeknees I sometimes put a herbal tea bag in a 2 litre bottle of fizzy water - the cheap stuff from the supermarket. Taylor's Rose Lemonade or Sour Cherry are both lovely and make zero carb flavoured water.

B -black coffee, buttery scrambled eggs and avocado

L-cream of spinach soup. I've made a vat and divided up into portions and frozen it. Although both kids ate a massive bowl today so not sure how long it'll last!

D- pan fried broccoli in loads of butter and garlic, spicy king prawns.

4.5L of water

I go back to work on 23 March which takes me right up to the end of bootcamp. Need to shift this last 1.5stone which to be fair is probably mostly made up of birthday cake and prosecco! 🙈

Food shop being delivered later on tonight and I've meal planned the whole week 💪🏼

absopugginglutely · 14/01/2020 18:35

Hi all just checking in:
B: 2 L water, cream coffee, scrambled eggs, bacon, mushroom, sausage
L: FLG salad, home made coleslaw, 3 slices holey cheese! Parma ham
S: slice salami
D: not had yet because about to go into my therapy session after work.
Will probably be some left over roast chicken, mayo a bit of grated cheese and salad. Need to squeeze in my
Third litre of water I’ve had another 250ml so just 750ml to sip throughout the eve.

absopugginglutely · 14/01/2020 18:37

@ DiscontentedWoman sounds delicious

KondoKonvert · 14/01/2020 18:45

I'm enjoying reading everyone's menus. Some good inspiration there!

B: butter coffee

L: leftover pulled pork with a huge piece of crackling on top, cabbage stir fried in butter

D: roast chicken with skin on, celeriac roasted with the chicken and broccoli with butter melted on.

Absolute fuckton of water...half a litre to go til target!

MonaChopsis · 14/01/2020 18:50

Belated check-in!! Hi all. Was low carbing yesterday but was also low-technology day!! So couldn't log meals. Can someone update the spreadsheet for me please? Starting weight yesterday was 204.

Today's meals were good, B was scrambled eggs with butter fried mushrooms, L was Greek yoghurt with almonds, raspberries and chia seeds (probably not strictly on plan but they are GP recommended and I only have a teaspoon which is less than 1g of carbs), D was artichoke and smelly cheese salad which was lush. Feeling pleasantly full and now topping up on water!!

Have a bump in the road next week as I am going to a catered conference, and there was only one veggie option (jackfruit curry) so am going to have to do the best I can then get back on the wagon. I'm already feeling the benefits of low carbing, which for me is that my food cravings and mood fluctuations even out so fast. I have had a year of really struggling with my mental health and it feels great to be making some positive changes at last!

Just checking in (on holiday this week, so not around much). I think my fat adaptation is kicking back in. In some ways, my three months of wandering slightly off piste has been a good lesson for me - after three years of solid bootcamping Every. Single. Day, with no exceptions, I think at some level I thought I would be able to tolerate carbs again. 10lbs weight gain in three months showed me otherwise. I geared up for boot camp last week, started properly on Saturday and today when we were out on the hills it was just too cold feel motivated to peel off gloves and balaclavas to eat packed lunch, so lunch passed with just a bit of a poke from my tummy about 4pm when we got back in the car. I drank some bullion with a splash of cream and I’m now watching my fat, butter basted chicken do it’s thing in the oven. Having it with (home made) celeriac crisps, buttered sprouts and cauliflower roasted with oil. I’m relieved because over Xmas I had noticed these ravenous, hangry feelings of old return now and then, but no appearance from them today at all, despite being quite active.

Hagbeth · 14/01/2020 19:23

Third time lucky hopefully! Smile
Chicken with mozzarella, tomatoes and green beans and mushrooms in cream sauce.
I have to go to Tesco tomorrow and get fresh vegetables.

Rshard · 14/01/2020 19:27

Some lovely food being eaten today!

B scrambled eggs, mushrooms
L shredded sprouts, fried with bacon and Boursin stirred through, Greek yoghurt
D chicken curry and cauliflower rice

AthelstaneTheUnready · 14/01/2020 19:27

Beautiful, Hagbeth Grin

B: x2 creamy coffees
L: pate & baby spinach
D: beef shin stew, mushrooms, bowl of buttered broccoli

Was poncing around Sainsbury's earlier and the only pork scratchings I could see were... low fat. Low fat, and called something deeply unappealing, like 'Pork Scrapings', can't remember now.

WHAT is the point of low fat scratchings!? Angry

PseudoBadger · 14/01/2020 19:45

Dinner - chicken thighs, left over roast chicken and bacon in a home made stock with cream, leeks, shallots, celery and courgette.

BlueLilyLilyBlue · 14/01/2020 20:18

Thanks @StuntNun Flowers

Just got round to putting in my starting weight, didn't get chance yesterday.

For those just starting, I was sceptical when I started. I've been on a very low carb diet since last summer and lost 4 stone. The best thing about this WOE is once you've gone through the adaptation period is that I don't constantly think about food. My hunger doesn't constantly control me any more and it is honestly a relief. If you can stick out the beginning part it is a WOE I will try and maintain past the weight loss.

B - creamy coffee
L - 3 sausages and some mushrooms
D - chicken with pesto and mozarella, cabbage, sprouts.
Looooads of sparkling water. I've found it way more refreshing and its replaced thr majority of my diet coke!

StuntNun · 14/01/2020 20:27

That looks lush Hagbeth I'll be round for dinner tomorrow! Wink

Low fat pork scratchings Confused wtf?!

waspfig · 14/01/2020 21:04

@StuntNun

So on the dairy issue, is it just that some things (e.g. cheese) can be carb heavy and so should be avoided? Or is it something else in dairy products that can jeopardise weight loss?

Cheese is my absolute favourite food and so convenient to snack on (particularly when I'm thinking about dessert). But I don't want to have too much and not see results!

Rayna37 · 14/01/2020 21:04

B: 2 eggs scrambled with butter
snack of cheese
L: tuna mayo on green leaves with oil, cucumber and tomato; Greek yogurt
D: beef Bourguignon: frozen leftovers from December so may have had a bit of flour in it. Served on sautéed kale.

CheddarGorgeous · 14/01/2020 21:20

B - two sausages (working breakfast, left the brioche bun)
L - tuna salad
D - Middle Eastern veggie hotpot thing with feta

And I successfully ignored piles of cakes and pastries all day at work 😇
