Week 3 – Keep celebrating the scale and non-scale victories!

Hello Bootcampers and welcome to week 3. Thanks so much to PrettyBird for the previous threads – I hope I can live up to the high standards this week.

Hopefully this WOE (way of eating) is starting to feel easier for you, and you will have seen some good losses in weeks 1 & 2. The exciting thing about week three, is that for those who want to, we can tentatively move into Bootcamp Light.

The key changes are that you can add in some carbier vegetables in moderation, although it is best to stick to those that are 3g carbs per 100g or less for the majority of your vegetable intake. You can add some fruit in the form of berries in moderation, have nuts and seeds in moderation, and can have some alcohol – you guessed it – IN MODERATION. Vodka and soda, dry white wine, or red wine are the best choices. The rules for Bootcamp and Bootcamp Light, along with fruit, veg & nut carb counters are in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, kindly organised by SayrraT.

The good thing about Bootcamp Light is that it opens up your menu choices, and hopefully feels sustainable for a lot of people. However don’t be tempted to view this as a free for all – if you suddenly start eating loads of roasted butternut squash, followed by bowlfuls of berries all washed down with a bottle of Prosecco and packet of almonds, it will stall you.

Lots of people find that sticking to Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light for the weekend works well for them. Others find that they need to stick to Bootcamp in the main, either because their metabolisms can’t cope with the extra carbs (me) or because psychologically they are in the ‘abstainer’ camp (also me) rather than the ‘moderation’ camp. Just do whatever works for you.

Some people find they stall in Weeks 3 and 4, and the initial whooshes of weeks 1 and 2 can quickly become distant memories. Just KOKO (keep on keeping on), celebrate non-scale victories, drink plenty of water, and trust that this will work. Weight loss isn’t always linear, and there are loads of posters on here who have had amazing losses over the last year who are testament that this works in the long term.

So after what feels like an epic OP Grin, good luck on the scale and non-scale victories this week!

I found a tapas recipe book in a charity shop today, it's got lots of great recipes which will make cooking more interesting I think.I need to get ideas to keep my food varied and tast or I know I'll get bored of it, so good to get a book to give me some inspiration!

BerylStreep · 27/01/2018 21:15

The fathead pizza was quite good. I just used tomato puree, but I think taking the time to make a good tomato base would have been worthwhile.

Actually, the weather here has been lovely - bright and mild. I have even contemplated doing some gardening. Only contemplated though, and bought a mini trug in anticipation. DH had his surgery yesterday and is home now - so there really isn't a lot of spare time for the likes of gardening.

I haven’t had enough veg today, and I’ve had two drinks tonight. This is very unlike me. We were out today and one of my toddlers disappeared. I just turned around and he was gone. He had wandered quite far off to have a look at something and we were inside so there wasn’t a great chance that he could have got anywhere really, but it took long enough to find him that the worst-case possibilities were running through my mind while I pushed through crowds of people shouting his name.
So, I’m having a couple of drinks. Normally I would fall face first into a bar of chocolate.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 27/01/2018 22:03

Beryl - did you put anything with the purée? I thin it down with olive oil and add some herbs and pepper. Sometimes add garlic too. Takes two secs and is really yummy.

My best laid plans went to pot yesterday, as I ended up babysitting for a friend and staying over and eating there. Meant I didn’t get my beef stew til today. And as I ended up with a migraine this afternoon which I went to sleep off it burnt in the oven. :-( But it turned out fine in the end. I have leftovers, which I’ll either have tomorrow lunchtime or for dinner.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 27/01/2018 22:09

Love fathead pizza Beryl! I add rosemary to my dough and use half of it to make crackers. Hope your DH is recovering well.

I've got a couple of questions/observations.

  1. my mouth tastes like a badger's arse and (according to DH) I smell of acetone. I'm drinking plenty of water and got plenty of salt, but my mouth! Help!

  2. my appetite has really dropped, I'm finding it all quite strange. I had a creamy coffee whilst out in town with the DC this morning and then apart from water had nothing until around 6pm when I had a snack of a ome olives, salami and a peperami (partly to get rid of the taste in my mouth). Dinner was steak with veg and some Oppo ice-cream (thanks for that BIWI Grin).

Should I be eating more?

  1. I decided to treat myself to a small glass of red with dinner. I managed a couple of sips and had to give up - it was too strong. What is going on? Confused
TheWayOfTheWorld · 27/01/2018 22:10

Titus Flowers - that has happened to me a couple of times and is absolutely awful. That heart stopping moment when there is no sign of them (and all I can think of is James Bulger Sad).

BerylStreep · 27/01/2018 22:52

Titus enjoy those drinks - it's absolutely panic inducing when that happens.

Time - no I just put tomato puree straight on to the base - olive oil and herbs / garlic sounds lovely. I'll try it next time. I also think I may have overcooked it. My oven runs quite hot.

TheWayOfTheWorld if your breath is bothering you that much, you might want to try eating a little bit more to reduce the amount of ketones you are producing. You could also try chewing mint or parsley or having peppermint tea. AFAIK most people adapt to ketosis after a week or so, so the breath issue should resolve itself. Keep drinking water. My tolerance to alcohol goes right down with this WOE doesn't stop me trying though

Titus so relieved you found your son. That must have been awful. I think you were remarkable only having a couple of drinks. 💐

ilovecherries · 28/01/2018 00:22

Titus, that's just such a scary thing. I'm not proud of it, but the one and only time I slapped one of my kids was when I lost my DS on the beach when he was about 8. When I found him I was so relieved and so beside myself that I shrieked at him all the way back to the car, and gave him a right whack for wandering off. I had taken his sister for a paddle, he hadn't wanted to come, and I had left him literally about 5 yards away with the stuff. But of course because I was watching that she didn't go too far in, I had my back to him for a minute. I was mortified (still am really), but he says he doesn't even remember it (the getting lost or the slap), whereas I felt I'd let myself and them down.

Twoo · 28/01/2018 06:12

TheSeasonOfTheWitch · 28/01/2018 06:28

Thanks for all your support. I stopped myself from going downstairs last night so it stayed off eating the chocolate.

What a fright Titus Thanks
*
Beryl* I'm glad someone at least has some sunshine! Lovely for your DH to be able to wrap up and take in some vitamin D after a hospital stay.

KOKO everyone, weigh in tomorrow!

BumbleBeef30 · 28/01/2018 06:42

So glad you found your toddler titus. It’s so frightening when they wander off.

B bacon and mushrooms
S ham
L courgettes with melted cheddar

D truffle butter chicken and stir fry veg, lots of mayonnaise
W I drank a lot of tea without thinking about the milk, but I’m going to get some fruit teas to get around that.

Rshard · 28/01/2018 08:04

Glad you found your little one titus, so scary.

Yesterday’s food was
B - shaksuka at a new cafe in town
L - brussels and cauliflower, Parmesan
D - chicken fajita salad

BIWI · 28/01/2018 08:28

Don't know if anyone else gets The Guardian, but there was a lovely recipe in the 'Feast' section yesterday, for swede laksa. It would normally be with ordinary noodles, but if you used shirataki/Bare Naked noodles it would be perfect. I'll post the recipe on the vegetarian recipe thread later.

headoutofthesand · 28/01/2018 08:36

Titus what a shock for you.

Blackmozart how is your DS

I am definitely expecting to stall & possibly gain this week. I got my period last night & went out to a friends who served up chilli. She had interpreted "low carb" as "no wheat" so didn't offer me garlic bread but gave me a huge jacket potato and the chilli itself was more chickpeas, kidney beans & red pepper than meat. I didn't have the jacket potato and just ate the chilli with salad and loads of cheese.
I also didn't drink. The thing I love about dry Jan is that no one questions it. Let's hope they apply the same to dry Feb.

Grimbles · 28/01/2018 09:03

I drank last night. 3 glasses of red, which in the normal scheme of things is not bad, but I am hanging bigtime today Sad

I stuck to lchf food, though - just a lot more than I should have had.

blackteaplease · 28/01/2018 09:47

Titus that has happened to me, it's just awful. Glad your toddler was found safe and well.

NSV for me, lots of my clothes don't fit. But as I am skint and aim to lose another half stone I didn't want to buy anything and look a mess. I need the style fairy to sort me out.

TitusAndromedon · 28/01/2018 09:51

Thanks so much for all your kind messages. I am feeling those two drinks this morning! We’re about to take our boys swimming, so I’m sure a large echoey pool smelling strongly of chlorine will sort me right out. Hmm

Aiming to get more veg in today.

SayrraT · 28/01/2018 10:39

Just had a yummy breakfast, tuna mayo, kale with butter and almond milk coffee!

Need to get my bum in gear and go and ride.

abbey44 · 28/01/2018 10:43

Titus just the two drinks was pretty restrained after an experience like that! Good luck with the swimming...

Liking the sound of swede laksa - have a swede and Bare Naked noodles in the fridge, so that'll be something new to try.

Twoo - that's a great idea - we could combine forces and plot how to gatecrash the now fully-booked masterclasses Grin

BIWI · 28/01/2018 12:16

I've posted the recipe for swede laksa on the vegetarian recipe thread but here's a link to the recipe in Feast/The Guardian, so you can see the picture

vintagebella · 28/01/2018 12:23

I can't keep up with the threads at the moment (still reading page 15 of this one) but I need to try. I need you lot to keep me on track!

I've slipped up badly by being complacent. I misread pack information and have had 4 times the carbs I thought I had. I've also been a bit down recently so have slid into mindless snacking. All low carb but so unnecessary, and a very slippery slope.

I've been the same weight since October after losing 3 stone on this woe. I still have 3 stone to lose so I need to get going again. I was happy to maintain till after Christmas and New year but want to lose at least another stone before Easter.

I hereby pledge to be accountable Grin I will log my food every day. I will also weigh myself often to plot the ups and downs rather than just ignoring them in the hope they go away.

KOKO

Alwaysinmyheart · 28/01/2018 12:49

I've been v bad. I made myself a low carb Baileys last night as I was at DP's last night as he has lots of whisky. It was so nice, I had 3 of them! I daren't weigh myself this morning...Blush
