Week 3 – Keep celebrating the scale and non-scale victories!

Hello Bootcampers and welcome to week 3. Thanks so much to PrettyBird for the previous threads – I hope I can live up to the high standards this week.

Hopefully this WOE (way of eating) is starting to feel easier for you, and you will have seen some good losses in weeks 1 & 2. The exciting thing about week three, is that for those who want to, we can tentatively move into Bootcamp Light.

The key changes are that you can add in some carbier vegetables in moderation, although it is best to stick to those that are 3g carbs per 100g or less for the majority of your vegetable intake. You can add some fruit in the form of berries in moderation, have nuts and seeds in moderation, and can have some alcohol – you guessed it – IN MODERATION. Vodka and soda, dry white wine, or red wine are the best choices. The rules for Bootcamp and Bootcamp Light, along with fruit, veg & nut carb counters are in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, kindly organised by SayrraT.

The good thing about Bootcamp Light is that it opens up your menu choices, and hopefully feels sustainable for a lot of people. However don’t be tempted to view this as a free for all – if you suddenly start eating loads of roasted butternut squash, followed by bowlfuls of berries all washed down with a bottle of Prosecco and packet of almonds, it will stall you.

Lots of people find that sticking to Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light for the weekend works well for them. Others find that they need to stick to Bootcamp in the main, either because their metabolisms can’t cope with the extra carbs (me) or because psychologically they are in the ‘abstainer’ camp (also me) rather than the ‘moderation’ camp. Just do whatever works for you.

Some people find they stall in Weeks 3 and 4, and the initial whooshes of weeks 1 and 2 can quickly become distant memories. Just KOKO (keep on keeping on), celebrate non-scale victories, drink plenty of water, and trust that this will work. Weight loss isn’t always linear, and there are loads of posters on here who have had amazing losses over the last year who are testament that this works in the long term.

So after what feels like an epic OP Grin, good luck on the scale and non-scale victories this week!

Thanks BIWI - that's dinner sorted then. Just don't think it's going to make four helpings though somehow...

BerylStreep · 28/01/2018 12:54

VintageBella 3 stone already is amazing! Well done.

titus Flowers been there myself and it's literally the most awful gut wrenching pain there is. Glad DC was found safe and sound.

I'm happy to report a SV. I've finally started to lose weight since Christmas indulgence. and it has taken 3 weeks to get here. Learning experience. I know now what to expect from planned carby twatness and this will help me make choices in the future. thanks to grah for this wisdom. where is he btw?

I also have a NSV to report. sorted out a load of fat clothes for the charity shop and went and bought some new ones. in size 16. this is a very special moment for me. puts me back to where I was 3 years ago. I'm on my way to the right weight. eventually!

Thanks for your work on the recipe threads biwi. I've browsed the veggie one and there are so many things I want to make! I'm not a vegetarian but I do love veg.

hurrah for mimosa's pubes!

Rshard · 28/01/2018 14:25

Well done yolo on the SV and NSV - good work! I’d also wondered about grah?

Sorry for late reply. Someone asked if maybe I wasn’t eating enough? The thing is it’s not like I’m restricting myself, I’m eating until I feel I’ve had enough. So I’d find it difficult to eat more than I already am.

Yesterday I didn’t have breakfast, had water and a coffee. Out for a late lunch/early dinner for my sons birthday - shared some starters (low carb) then I had a steak and salad. I didn’t have pudding but I did have a couple of tequila cocktails (the least sweet ones on the menu but a special occasion). No dinner as I wasn’t that hungry, just a couple of olives. Lots more water throughout the day.

Today no breakfast except a coffee as I was doing roast lunch ready for 1pm. So I had roast chicken, broccoli, cauliflower, small amount of stuffing, small amount of gravy (I usually skip the gravy but tbh today I thought bollocks to it. Didn’t have loads though) cabbage. Obv I won’t have any pudding later, I rarely have more than a roast on a Sunday anyway as I stay full. Lots of water. I am having a couple of proseccos though but I don’t drink through the week.

I’m trying to restrict the amount of coffee I have so I’m not having the milk - I think that’s a downfall. Also my eating on a sat/sun is always a bit sporadic so not a great example to show you. Through the week it’s generally better.

YoLoHogwomanay · 28/01/2018 14:53

thanks Rshard. I now feel able to post my weight on the SOF. well I will tomorrow.

guy maybe it's the alcohol stalling you. Post pics of your plate and we can see your portion sizes. this is something I struggle with since I just love food so much and I'm greedy. I can shovel it in if I'm not careful.

YoLoHogwomanay · 28/01/2018 14:55

I have a pork joint. I'm going to make this in the slow cooker in the week.

www.ibreatheimhungry.com/slow-cooker-pulled-pork-low-carb-gluten-free/

Anyone tried this recipe before?

GuyMartinsSideburns · 28/01/2018 15:01

YoLo that’s an idea, maybe I should take some pics. I don’t pile up my plate though, I generally get full pretty quickly but I guess portion sizes could creep up. Thanks for the idea x

Appaloosajunction · 28/01/2018 15:57

Hi all. Hope everyone is having a good day

I am going to have a go at making celeriac chips and I was wondering if anyone knows what the oven temp should be?
Thanks in advance.

Mimosa1 · 28/01/2018 16:07

Oh, Titus, I'm so glad you found your toddler. What a horrible shock.

My weight loss seems quite a bit slower this time around. I know I'm not drinking enough so this week, I'm going to have loads and see if that shifts things - should help that I'm doing "no Diet Coke dry Feb". I've done quite well sticking to the woe in the face of temptation though. Weight is falling off my DH and it's nice we're doing this together, and moving in the right direction for me albeit slowly.

twinkledag · 28/01/2018 16:54

I used to love mashed avocado on seeded bread. Apart from a Lidl protein roll what else is mashed avocado nice with?

YoLoHogwomanay · 28/01/2018 17:00

appaloosa i use a hot oven. so anything between 180 and 220C

twinkle parmesan or babybel crisps? i think the best thing to do though is not to substitute something because then you are comparing in your mind to how you ate it before and it might not be better. this is why I haven't made fathead pizza or any bread substitutes in all the time I've been lc-ing.

I have just eaten a bowl of sliced avocado, brie and olives. was scrumptious.

nekobus · 28/01/2018 17:00

Twinkle have you tried a ground almond and/or flaxseed bread? This one is great (although some people find it a bit 'eggy' - I don't) it's lovely toasted with butter and then mashed avocado (or butter and marmite my fave)

headoutofthesand he’s doing well thank you. Teeth fixed, just waiting (forever) for the car to come out of forensics. We’ll then still have to see if it’s fixable but he is ok which is the main thing.

I like the look of that ‘bread’ recipe so might try it at some point but like some others I am a bit nervous about whether I will then want it all the time. I used to make the ‘garlic’ bread from the IPD recipe book but I’m sure it stalled me.

At vast expense in H&B I bought coconut oil, almond, and coconut flour and psyllium husk ground not tablet. Now I need to do something with them!! 😊

prettybird · 28/01/2018 17:34

For future reference BlackMozart - the KTC coconut oil (available in Asian shops or the ethnic aisle of big supermarkets) is c£2.50 for 500ml - and is flavourless. Smile

BlackMozart · 28/01/2018 17:50

Thank you prettybird I will remember that 🙂

nekobus · 28/01/2018 17:54

Prettybird how did your burns supper go? Did you make a low carb cranachan?

I went for a 'conscious' off-piste meal, had some haggis, neeps and made a celeriac dauphinois which was so lush that everyone ate it up so I had no leftovers Hmm. Then did have a little bit of trifle (mainly the cream and raspberries) so straight back on track today.

B - creamy coffee
L - bacon, fried egg, fried mushrooms and a few cherry toms
D - low carb bolognese with courgette ribbons. I tried the Tom Kerridge tip of roasting the mince in the oven but I have no patience to wait 30-40 mins! Was still lovely and based on your mums lasagna from the recipe thread, prettybird thumbs up from everyone Grin

BIWI · 28/01/2018 17:57

@twinkledag - if you go and have a look at the vegetarian low carb recipe thread, there are some cracker recipes on there. They'd be lovely with avocado

prettybird · 28/01/2018 18:16

Nekobus - Burns supper went well. Starter was grilled goats cheese on rocket with Stornoway black budding yes I know it's not low carb and seared scallops stacked on top and garnished with crispy streaky bacon and a tiny bit of apple jelly.

Didn't have too much of the haggis but loads of buttery neeps and none of mashed tatties

I made a low-ish carb cranachan, roasting some rolled oats with inulin (which melted and I then broke up the ensuing mass to make crunchy oats) and mixing with whipped cream and raspberries and a glug of whisky. Next time I'll try it with the erythritol rather than the inulin.

twinkledag · 28/01/2018 18:23

Thanks everyone.

I might just have mashed avo on the side of salad - I'll try it and see how I go Smile

Rshard · 28/01/2018 18:24

I like the look of that recipe nekobus, where do you buy flax meal from? Also recipe mentions small loaf tin? 1lb tin?

BlackMozart · 28/01/2018 18:36

I think I saw on the veg thread that you can get flax meal (ground flax seeds) in Sainsbury’s so maybe other supermarkets do it too?

prettybird · 28/01/2018 18:46

Both Sainsbury's and Tesco stock ground flaxseed, as does, occasionally, Lidl (although more frequently as a topping mixed with pumpkin seeds and dried berries).

nekobus · 28/01/2018 18:54

It's also known as linseed / ground linseed.
I use a small silicone loaf tin, no idea of size, but it's not a big loaf!

nekobus · 28/01/2018 18:57

Love your menu pretty looks lovely especially the starter. I made smoked salmon pate which was unintentionally low carb.
