Hi all, can't believe I have to start the new thread

Slng, lol @ ds2!

Sfx, sparkle sounds nice!

I'm having to bribe ds1 to leave the house atm, that can't be right surely

He had his nativity yesterday, all lines remembered though there was a bit of yawning during it

Morning all. Hope everyone is well.

Picked DS up at nursery yesterday for the first time in months and found out it was Parents Evening (DH never checks these things). Thankfully, DS is doing fine (albeit being very active) but we should do more phonetics and simple math (adding) at home. Surely these things are done at primary school rather than pre-school? Apparently, reading alphabets and writing his name isn't enough... Are they turning me to be a pushy parent...?

sfxmum · 26/01/2010 10:24

sushi you are a west London mummy so by definition a pushy parent

hello all hope everyone is well

slng · 26/01/2010 10:48

Not as pushy as over here - DS2 learns addition (because he's envious of DS1's maths prowess and because he wants to play with the colourful lolly sticks), writes his name beautifully backwards usually and in random order and location sometimes, but beautifully nonetheless, learns French and ballet at nursery. One day he came back showing us how to gallop and how to move like you are in superglue. And tells us random facts about anacondas and boa constrictors and flowers. And bakes bread, which is quite nice. But he seems quite relaxed about all his powers.

slng · 26/01/2010 10:49

Show off . But he seems to enjoy it all. Child-led: not pushy. Parent-led: pushy.

sfxmum · 26/01/2010 10:54

point beautifully and clearly illustrated

slng · 26/01/2010 11:06

At work ATM and waiting for people to turn up...

Sometimes it seems everyone is scared of being seen as pushy. But kids love knowledge. They want to know everything. And there's never a better time to learn than when their ability to absorb things is at its height. Over the hill by the time they are five. OK, maybe an exaggeration, but they can do more than they let on ... The problem is that grown-ups are not always in tune with what they want at a specific point in time, and how they want it.

Where are these people who are supposed to come to this meeting? If they don't come soon I'll bore you with more of my theories.

Aha! Here they are!

sfxmum · 26/01/2010 16:30

it is quite true that being seen as clever or wanting to instil in your children a love of learning beyond mediocrity is seen as pushy as it is not 'desirable' to be clever

had very busy day but not doing what I needed to do

stepfordwife · 26/01/2010 18:32

two words:
tax return

four more:
losing will to live

most galling thing: all my own fault

note to self: this leaving things until the last minute thing - especially things i am rather hopeless at - has GOT to change....

apologies for: self-indulgent post

hope everyone well
will give you a shout when tax return in grasping hands of government
toodlepip

stepfordwife · 26/01/2010 18:38

..anyone seen sherlock holmes?
quite fancy robert downey junior wallowing in victorian london...
can feel a 2-for-1 date in my bones...(thankyou orange wednesdays..)

slng · 26/01/2010 19:50

Steppie - are you not joining Billy Bragg in protesting against bankers' bonuses (boni!?) by not paying your taxes? Makes a stand, save filling in forms. Two birds with one stone. Go on. You know you want to.

Bakes very flat but very nice lemon butter cookies. Now who wants to do the washing up?

sfxmum · 27/01/2010 13:10

I expect Billy has a fund going for Bail

hello all

went to Pilates thanks to neighbour who stayed at my place as my front door was painted this morning and needs to stay open for a few hrs

vbus · 27/01/2010 14:02

Hello all

Hope everyone well

Seem to have busy days now back in to full swing of nursery, various activities and playates. DS1 tired but in a very good mood. Even managed to get him some swim lessons as there's been a cancellation, hope he enjoys them.

Sushi- I would've thought they could do those things in school but if DS keen they go for it.

Have IL's visiting at wkend as they have come over to see the new baby and obviously it wouldn't be fair if they didn't stay with us too

slng · 27/01/2010 18:51

Hello all!

Baked a krantz cake today! Without the plaits ...

But must go and tell stories now. We are reading Chinese mythologies, about how the sky was damaged and patched up with coloured stones and hence we get lovely sunsets ... "That's not real though, mummy?" in slightly worried tones.

slng · 28/01/2010 08:01

Good morning!

Kids finished boiled egg breakfast unexpectedly speedily and now playing monsters-falling-over game.

What's happened to night out? >

sfxmum · 28/01/2010 11:56

slng isn't kranz just cream filled layered cake? btw night out is this Saturday

hello all

dd told me this morning she did not want me to take her to school wanted the neighbour instead as she is much nicer than me

must fit it some study before picking up the monkey from school

sfxmum · 28/01/2010 11:57

I did not mean 'just' dismissive just wandered where the plat come in btw

slng · 28/01/2010 12:28

sfx - krantz cake

vbus · 28/01/2010 13:31

Hello

Can't say I've ever had Krantz cake, was it good Slng?

I made squash risotto for lunch, yummy.

For once I don't have to make cakes for school tom as Ds1 can now try one with egg in it, yay. Phew, didn't fancy staying up all night and then decorating as per this week's theme

looking fwd to night out!

slng · 28/01/2010 14:49

Krantz cake very nice. Though my recipe demanded egg yolks only, so had to tandem bake lemon butter cookies which only used egg whites ... There vbus - another yolk-only recipe!

tillyfernackerpants · 28/01/2010 15:11

am very of all the baking, I need a better oven!

vbus, how's the egg testing going? Are you still keeping it to the weekends?

sfx, ds1 wanted to go to school by himself today as apparently I'm too impatient !

Am just chilling out this afternoon, ds2 asleep so am letting ds1 watch some tv while I do some MNing studying. Might take a trip to the library after tea though, dh out tonight so need something to fill in the witching hour until I can put them to bed

Just reported dog poo to council. I'm fed up and I'm determined that someone else should be fed up too.

Waiting for friend and DC to turn up!

sfxmum · 28/01/2010 15:56

tilly - shaper than a serpent's tooth can't wait for teenagedom

slng those lemon cookies sound light recipe please
is the cake very pudding like? sounds interesting

vbus noticed still had glasses in my bag today, I like butternut squash risotto especially when I roast the squash with red onion and garlic then stir it into plain risotto _ not a low fat option

boiler and lights fixed shuddering at the cost

hoping for a quiet evening

tillyfernackerpants · 28/01/2010 19:24

slng, would also like the recipe for lemon cookies.

Am becoming a big fan of Dan Lepard, putting his books on my birthday list

tillyfernackerpants · 28/01/2010 19:39
