I have read 3 Rushdie, it was fine it ha good moments and occasionally very funny

Martin Amis all I can say don't read Money, one of the few books I have not finished, he can write and write very cleverly and well but all seems empty to me

Kewcumber · 01/07/2011 13:25

Hope she's not really adopting an elephant but merely sponsoring one!

Not sure how I will feel about being an Elephant Mum (or come to that a Rhino mum!

I hate Martin Amis - can;t engage with his books at all.

UptoapointLordCopper · 01/07/2011 13:52

Missed the elephant comments. As long as they don't bring it home they can adopt/sponsor anything they like.

I'm also inclined to hate Martin Amis but am waiting to read more of his books (I think I have read a couple - the Rachel papers and another one but they are so forgettable) first so I can hate him knowledgeably. Grin Not Money then. London fields?

sfxmum · 01/07/2011 14:15

copper don't like it either only 3 pages in, perhaps not a fair effort

KewC I expect that is what it means, and yes it seems so grown up, dd was telling there would likely be tears at assembly as all teacher changes are announced

OP posts:
tillyfernackerpants · 01/07/2011 15:47

Don't like Martin Amis, or Ian McEwan! But love Atwood. I've decided that life's too short to read a book I'm not really enjoying Grin

Kewcumber · 02/07/2011 21:42

I bought a bike helmet today Shock no bike yet though... (perhaps I can pay SFX's neighbourhood theives to steal one to order for me?)

sfxmum · 03/07/2011 09:31

KewC buying a new bike today and hopefully can do lessons this coming week I am absolutely determined
about neighbourhood thieves, they unscrewed/bolted the metal arch which holds the bikes and half screwed back on leaving the bolts on the ground, they were not in a hurry and brought tools Angry

Tilly Mcewan for me is hit and miss, settled on The year of the Flood

sfx - book teh course via the website. If its not showing, its because its full. But you might be able to talk your way on if you ring them.

sfxmum · 03/07/2011 14:42

Not showing. Will call thanks got new bike today. I am determined to do it.

OP posts:
UptoapointLordCopper · 03/07/2011 18:55

sfx - did thieves take DH's nice new bike too? Pashley, wasn't it? Hope it's covered by insurance! So Angry people feel they can just get away with things like that. But those thieves seemed pretty determined. Hope they are caught.

Had a look at that thread but completely bewildered. What's it about!?

Fed up of work and school. When is it holiday? I want to go camping! And shopping.

Am reading Lindsey Davis. Roman whodunnit. Grin Quite fun, actually.

UptoapointLordCopper · 03/07/2011 18:55

Why do I think it's a Pashley? Perhaps I've been browsing too much ...

sfxmum · 03/07/2011 19:06

yes copper that was the bike, he got it in March after the previous one was stolen from Sheen Gate, I got a much cheaper basic mountain bike, the cheek of it, bringing tools ant taking at least 5 bikes

it was insured all were covered by our insurance and both were police registered and marked it is infuriating

about school, was talking to dd's music teacher and some of the other parents there yesterday and everyone seems fed up and ready for the holidays, she said the attention of the children is waning. Next week it is the end of term concert. dd wants to attend some days at holiday club, will check prices and see if we can do a few half days

SushiMummy · 04/07/2011 12:05

Hi everyone.

DS and I played tennis this weekend which is good fun. (I had't played tennis for good 20 years, feels like a complete beginner.)

DS school report was a bit Confused but it looks like he is progressing well and most of all, he loves his school! Smile

sfxmum · 04/07/2011 12:09

hello Sushi nice to see you around
had a chat with a mum from your school last Saturday, apparently her boy is friends with hers (T)

Scremadelica perfect in good weather to end it before the huge fireworks, looking forward to it (but bought new wellies)

off to sweat a bit looks hot out cant fins my hat

OP posts:
vbus · 04/07/2011 19:27

hello Sushi

Glad you enjoyed the tennis. We haven't had school report yet. DS1 went into new classroom and met new teachers today, he seemed v. excited. Glad that they are not mixing up the classes for another year. They can do some school clubs next year, he has already said he wants to do computer club

I am starving, hoping Dh comes home soon so I can eat

Kora · 04/07/2011 22:06

Hi everyone, sorry it's been so long. Good hols, followed by crazy week back at work (all piled up and gone awry) but it was DD2's first birthday last Sunday, small gathering with lots of loved ones which has made everything fine. Also great day at home chilling with the girls today, watching them make each other laugh - simple pleasures at age 4 and 1. Grand (hope the sisterly love prevails as they grow up!!).

Thanks Vbus for great book recommendation of One Day. Had tried Hilary Mantel's second novel Vacant Possession and felt immediately queasy (supposed to be comedy; but way too macabre for a holiday read, or perhaps at all).

Sfx ShockAngry at bike theft. Hope insurers cough up and horribleness passes soon. Are they fixing the CCTV?! Enjoy gig on Weds - we're going out too, to see Weezer at Brixton academy. Very excited.

KewC Smile on bicycle skills! Well done!!! Sadly I'm the other way round, can cycle but still very much beginner on the car front, not good - left it too late I fear... One day, must rectify (when they invent a car that can drive itself and read the minds of other drivers around me...)

Copper - xfm is good. Seems to be training ground for 6music, both in audience and DJs. The other day someone made me listen to Radio 1. Reminded that I live in a bit of a closeted work musically, but I want to stay in it... That said, I did quite admire footage of Beyonce at Glasto, but that's because she can actually sing without a vocoder (and all-female band, very rare sight).

Any plans for HP outing yet? Can't wait. It would be great to catch up.

p.s. swedish wallander is def best, haven't even bothered with more than 5 mins of Branagh.

UptoapointLordCopper · 05/07/2011 08:00

Hello!

Busy week ahead. But really no motivation. Want to go shopping for birthday presents. Nothing more fun than shopping for 5yo little boy. Meccano? Lego? Soft toy versions of fierce creatures? I love these toys!

CD player/radio great success. Though DS1 was strangely impressed by concerto for piano duet (??) It's all quite inexplicable.

Off to supervise DS1 on school project!
